Researchers have proposed using hardware data compression units within the memory hierarchies of microprocessors in order to improve performance, energy efficiency, and functionality. However, most past work, and in particular work on cache compression, has made unsubstantiated assumptions about the performance, power consumption, and area overheads of the required compression hardware. We present a lossless compression algorithm that has been designed for on-line memory hierarchy compression, and cache compression in particular. We reduced our algorithm to a register transfer level hardware implementation, permitting performance, power consumption, and area estimation. the results of experiments comparing our work to previous work are presented.

Mapping and quantifying noise sources on trucks under actual operating conditions on the road are important for traffic noise modeling and mitigation. the purpose of this study is to develop a practical truck noise source localization technique using acoustic beam-forming. An experimental 70+ microphone elliptical array was designed and fabricated for truck testing. Beam-forming software was developed and implemented using a computerized data acquisition system. Proof-of-concept tests were performed at low-speed and high-speed truck testing facilities for a representative sample of trucks with widely different characteristics to validate the measurement system performance. the measurement system design parameters were verified experimentally, and certain improvements to the system were recommended for future implementation based on the field experience. the developed beam-forming measurement system provided adequate noise mapping and localization for various noise sources on trucks, stationary and moving withthe speed up to 50 mph. the results of the proof-of-concept testing presented in an accompanying paper (Part 2) confirm that the developed microphone array, data acquisition system and beam-forming software performed generally as expected and required no major adjustments. this ongoing project is funded by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, USA.

there is little argument that Building Information Modeling is the way of the future in the AEC industry;however, few would freely admit that the future is not here yet for the type of the building projects that the current wave of architecture is pushing for. It is interesting to note that for most of the conferences and presentations widely available on this hot topic, few negative opinions are voiced. We found the article by Michael Tardif, titled "Faith-based BIM," to be one of the few such articles. While with each release of the BIM upgrade, the programs improve by leaps and bounds, as of the time of writing it is still very cumbersome, inaccurate, if not plain impossible, to model more complex geometry so prevalent in modern architecture, as so noted by the authors' experience, as well as Dr. Lachmi Khemlani's honest review on the AECbytes website. Of equal, if not more, importance is the lack of standard and clear delineation of liability in the building information model between the design and construction team. For an ideal project to be conceived in BIM, there needs to be a high level of trust between various parties involved that are unfortunately not commonly found in the current atmosphere of the industry. A series of surveys commissioned anonymously by Adobe systems in 2004 and 2006 revealed an interesting finding that was covered in Sara Ferris' article on the Cadalyst. Amid the advancement and widespread availability of computing power, the AEC industry is relying on paper more than before: CAD files are reviewed in paper format more often in 2006 than in 2004. In this paper, we present Nache, a caching proxy for NFSv4 that enables a consistent cache of a remote NFS server to be maintained and shared across multiple local NFS clients. Nache leverages the features of NFSv4 to improve the performance of file accesses in a wide-area distributed setting by bringing the data closer to the client. Conceptually, Nache acts as an NFS server to the local clients and as an NFS client to the remote server. To provide cache consistency, Nache exploits the read and write delegations support in NFSv4. Nache enables the cache and the delegation to be shared among a set of local clients, thereby reducing conflicts and improving performance. We have implemented Nache in the Linux 2.6 kernel. Using Filebench workloads and other benchmarks, we present the evaluation of Nache and show that it can reduce the NFS operations at the server by 10-50%.

Authentication and Authorisation Infrastructures (AAIs) enhanced with an attribute-based access control model (ABAC) offer such services to service federations and customers. As AAIs are a security enhancing technology, design and implementation must comply with extremely high quality standards. Failures and vulnerabilities in the provided basic security services exponentially affect the service providing processes. Various AAI concepts, frameworks, and products have been developed in the past. Building on these experiences, we define a pattern system for AAIs. It will ensure interoperability and quality of future AN solutions. the derived pattern system consists of security patterns already published and in use, as well as on open standards like SAML and X4CML and related patterns. It can be directly used in the software development cycle, as proposed by different methodologies.

A miniaturised wireless sensor node with a high level of modularity is presented. A transceiver module with a size of 10mm by 10mm, operating in the 433/868NM frequency bands has been developed. An interface layer provides a regulated power supply from a rechargeable battery, USB battery charging, and USB communications to support the transceiver module. the node has been designed to support very low power operation for applications with low duty cycles, with a sleep current of 3.3 mu A, transmission current of 10.4mA, and reception current of 13.3mA. the small size combined withthe level of modularity and energy efficiency results in the suitability of this system to a wide variety of potential applications. this paper discusses the design goals of the node, the decisions made during the design process, and characterisation of the resulting implementation.
