With the arrival of tiered memory systems comprising various types of memory, such as DRAM and SCM, the operating system support for memory management is becoming increasingly important. However, the way that operating systems currently manage pages was designed under the assumption that all the memory has the same capabilities based on DRAM. this oversimplification leads to non-optimal memory usage in tiered memory systems. this study performs an in-depth analysis of page management schemes in the current Linux design extending NUMA to support systems equipped with both DRAM and SCM (Intel's DCPMM). In such multi-tiered memory systems, we find that the critical factor in performance is not only the access locality but also the access tier of memory. When considering both characteristics, there are several alternatives to page placement. However, current operating systems only prioritize access locality. this paper explores the design space of page management schemes, called AutoTiering, to use multi-tiered memory systems effectively. Our evaluation results show that our proposed techniques can significantly improve performance for various workloads, compared to the stock Linux kernel, by unlocking the potential of the multi-tiered memory hierarchy.

Memory safety vulnerabilities are a severe threat to modern computer systems allowing adversaries to leak or modify securitycritical data. To protect systems from this attack vector, full memory safety is required. As software-based countermeasures tend to induce significant runtime overheads, which is not acceptable for production code, hardware assistance is needed. Tagged memory architectures, e.g., already offered by the ARM MTE and SPARC ADI extensions, assign meta-information to memory objects, thus allowing to implement memory safety policies. However, due to the high tag collision probability caused by the small tag sizes, the protection guarantees of these schemes are limited. this paper presents Multi-Tag, the first hardware-software co-design utilizing a multi-granular tagging structure that provides strong protection against spatial and temporal memory safety violations. By combining object-granular memory tags with pagegranular tags stored in the page table entries, Multi-Tag overcomes the limitation of small tag sizes. Introducing page-granular tags significantly enhances the probabilistic protection capabilities of memory tagging without increasing the memory overhead or the system's complexity. We develop a prototype implementation comprising a gem5 model of the tagged architecture, a Linux kernel extension, and an LLVM-based compiler toolchain. the simulated performance overhead for the SPEC CPU2017 and nbench-byte benchmarks highlights the practicability of our design.

Pilot implementations are field tests of properly engineered, yet unfinished, systems. By exposing systems to their intended environment, pilot implementations emphasize realism and collect real-use feedback for system finalization. While practitioners recognize pilot implementations as a means of testing the fit between a system and its use environment, pilot implementations have received less attention from researchers in human-computer interaction. the workshop on pilot implementation for testing human-work interaction designs aimed to create research interest in pilot implementation and to provide a forum for discussing and maturing such research. the seven workshop papers included in this post-proceedings volume span a variety of angles on pilot implementation. they contribute valuable insights but also leave open questions. Collectively, they provide illustrative case studies and inspiration for further research.

Homa/Linux is a Linux kernel module that implements the Homa transport protocol. Measurements of Homa/Linux reconfirm Homa's superior performance compared to TCP and DCTCP. In a cluster benchmark with 40 nodes, Homa/Linux provided lower latency than both TCP and DCTCP for all message sizes;for short messages, Homa's 99th percentile tail latency was 7-83x lower than TCP and DCTCP. the benchmarks also show that Homa has eliminated network congestion as a significant performance limitation. Both tail latency and throughput are now limited by software overheads, particularly software congestion caused by imperfect load balancing of the protocol stack across cores. Another factor of 5-10x in performance can be achieved if software overheads can be eliminated in the future.

this paper presents the design and implementation of a proof of concept of a wearable electrostimulation device aimed at improving blood flow in the lower limbs. the portable system, integrated into wearable compression socks, delivers electrical pulses for muscular stimulation in specific areas of the leg, using conductive yarns in their structure, promoting better blood flow. this device addresses the growing sedentary lifestyle and the resulting health issues like poor circulation, which can lead to severe complications. It features Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication for real-time session control via a mobile application. the preliminary results demonstrate effective electrical stimulation, validated through testing, ensuring the feasibility of the system. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Weave and wobble are well known eigenmodes of motorcycles and have been studied by several authors because of their importance to the overall stability and safety of motorcycles. Studies have highlighted the importance of structural flexibility on these eigenmodes. A common approach in multibody simulation for modeling the flexibility is the lumped stiffness method. It is advantageous for its limited modeling effort and its small impact on computational time. However, it was never demonstrated if this approach leads to sufficient accuracy when simulating the weave and wobble eigenmodes. the present work answers this question by modeling the structural components of a motorcycle with the flexible multibody approach. the most relevant components for the stability of weave and wobble are identified. A comparison with the lumped stiffness approach is also proposed. Moreover, some implementation details concerning models with flexible bodies are discussed.

Respiratory diseases, including COPD and cancer, are among the leading causes of mortality worldwide, often resulting in prolonged dependency and impairment. Telemedicine offers immense potential for managing respiratory diseases, but its effectiveness is hindered by the lack of reliable objective measures for symptoms. Recent advances in deep learning have significantly enhanced the detection and analysis of coughing episodes, a key symptom of respiratory conditions, by leveraging audio signals and pattern recognition techniques. this paper introduces an efficient cough detection system tailored for real-time monitoring on low-end computational devices, such as smartphones. By integrating Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), we identify salient regions in audio spectrograms that are crucial for cough detection, enabling the design of an optimized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). the optimized CNN maintains high detection performance while significantly reducing computation time and memory usage. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Sophisticated modeling and simulation, based on rigid and flexible multibody dynamics, are nowadays a standard procedure in the design and analysis of vehicle systems and are widely adopted for on-road driving. Off-road driving for both terrestrial wheeled and tracked vehicles, as well as wheeled and legged robots and rovers for extra-terrestrial exploration pose additional modeling and simulation challenges, a primary one being that of the vehicle-terrain interaction, modeling of deformable terrain, and terramechanics in general. Techniques for modeling deformable terrain span an entire range varying in complexity, representation accuracy, and ensuing computational effort. While formulations such as fully-resolved granular dynamics, continuum modeling of granular material, or finite element can provide a high level of accuracy, they do so at a significant cost, even when the implementation leverages parallel computing and/or hardware accelerators. Real-time or faster than real-time terramechanics is a highly desired capability (in applications such as training of autonomous vehicles and robotic systems) or critical capability (in applications such as human-in-the-loop or hardware-in-the-loop). We present a real-time capable deformable soil implementation, extended from the Soil Contact Model (SCM) developed at the German Aerospace Center which in turn can be viewed as a generalization of the Bekker-Wong and Janosi-Hanamoto semi-empirical models for soil interaction with arbitrary three-dimensional shapes and arbitrary contact patches. this SCM implementation is available, alongside more computationally intensive deformable soil representations, in the open-source multi-physics package Chrono. We describe the overall implementation and the features of the Chrono SCM model, the efficient underlying data structures, the current multi-core parallelization aspects, and its scalability properties for concurrent simulation of multiple vehicles on deformable terrain.
