Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a promising technology for future wireless communications. By modulating the visible light-that has about 10,000x larger frequency band than that of radios-to transmit data, VLC has the potential to provide ultra-high-speed wireless connectivities. However, it also has limitations such as i) surrounding objects can easily block VLC links, and ii) intense ambient light can saturate the photodiodes of VLC receivers. In this work, from a different angle compared with state-of-the-art solutions, we utilize the side channel of VLC-a Radio Frequency (RF) channel created unintentionally during the transmission process of VLC-to break the above-mentioned VLC limitations. the key enabler is that the side RF channel also contains the data information transmitted in the VLC link. When the VLC link is blocked or saturated, we can utilize the side channel, capable of penetrating through blockages and not affected by ambient light, to assist VLC transmissions. thus a user service relying on VLC transmissions will not be interrupted. Besides the simple SingleInput Single-Output (SISO) case, we consider challenging scenarios where multiple VLC chains are synchronized to form Multiple-Input Multiple/Single-Output (MIMO/MISO) transmission strategies. To make our system practical, we address several challenges spanning from hardware to software. Compared to state-of-the-art design, we reduce the size of the receiving coil by nearly 90%. Experimental evaluations show that our system can decode overlapped RF signals created by a 3x3 MIMO VLC network five meters away, with various blockages in between. Our system also works under intense ambient light conditions (>100,000 lux).

Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) is a system that combines digital and virtual content for users so users are not fully immersed in the virtual world but can benefit from immersive experiences while still being in the real world. However, the end-user may experience various design challenges while using such immersive technologies. To deliver positive User Experience (UX), researchers need to understand the design factors, end-user challenges, and enhance the overall immersive UX for MAR. this research follows the design science approach to present a UX model for MAR, which encapsulate components and design factors that can aid in positive UX. We developed a MAR system to verify and validate the UX model by evaluating and benchmarking it. the experimental results show excellent system novelty, good attractiveness and perspicuity compared to the benchmark. the findings suggest that the efficiency, dependability, and stimulation of MAR can be improved to enhance the UX further. this study's research knowledge can be utilized to improve the immersive design and engineering of MAR services based on understanding the practical aspirations of potential end-users.

In this paper we propose an original and open multi-agent system architecture for the important and challenging to engineer vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and grid-to-vehicle (G2V) energy transfer problem domain. To address the features required, we define two novel design patterns that can be used with statecharts in many real-world situations. the first one is based on the well-known factory design pattern, and the second on the class generalization relationship. these patterns can be coupled with ASEME, an agent-oriented software engineering methodology that uses statecharts for the inter-and intra-agent control models. the latter also fits well with the FIPA standards-compliant JADE agent platform that we used for implementation.

Web services rely on caching at nearly every layer of the system architecture. Commonly, each cache is implemented and maintained independently by a distinct team and is highly specialized to its function. For example, an application-data cache would be independent from a CDN cache. However, this approach ignores the difficult challenges that different caching systems have in common, greatly increasing the overall effort required to deploy, maintain, and scale each *** paper presents a different approach to cache development, successfully employed at Facebook, which extracts a core set of common requirements and functionality from otherwise disjoint caching systems. CacheLib is a general-purpose caching engine, designed based on experiences with a range of caching use cases at Facebook, that facilitates the easy development and maintenance of caches. CacheLib was first deployed at Facebook in 2017 and today powers over 70 services including CDN, storage, and application-data *** paper describes our experiences during the transition from independent, specialized caches to the widespread adoption of CacheLib. We explain how the characteristics of production workloads and use cases at Facebook drove important design decisions. We describe how caches at Facebook have evolved over time, including the significant benefits seen from deploying CacheLib. We also discuss the implications our experiences have for future caching design and research.

Heat dissipations of servers in datacenter racks are following an ever-increasing trend, breaking the economical heat removal limits of traditional air-based cooling technologies. Currently, an average of 40-45% of the total datacenter energy consumption is needed to cool servers, presenting significant challenges to maintain energy efficiencies and also noise levels within US OSHA standards the present paper focuses on the determination of the optimal design of a compact plate heat exchanger (PHE), acting as an overhead refrigerant-to-water condenser of a macro-scale thermosyphon, which dissipates the total heat from a datacenter rack into a cooling loop for waste heat recovery applications (e.g. district heating network). PHEs are already the preferred solution for many industrial and domestic applications (especially small to medium size refrigeration and heat pump systems), since they provide higher heat transfer performance, higher flexibility toward the targeted application and lower pressure drops compared to the conventional tube-in-tube and shell-and-tube heat exchangers. Furthermore, due to the numerous variables involved in the design of PHEs, such as plate number, plate footprint size, geometry of the corrugation pattern (i.e. chevron angle, pressing depth, etc.), an optimization analysis and corresponding simulation tool is auspicious to finding the optimal design of these units to accommodate the targeted heat rates of datacenter racks. Hence, this study proposes a novel optimization process which incorporates a local simulator (an improved version compared to the one presented at IthERM 2018) for accurately rating and designing PHEs over a wide range of operating conditions, plate geometries and working fluids. the improved simulator uses a local one-dimensional effectiveness-NTU approach, with a local implementation of mass, momentum and energy equations, coupled with newly upgraded methods for condensation heat transfer coefficients and frictional p

high nonlinearity and deficiency in control at boost-phase due to high angle of attack during maneuver and low velocity in the vertical launched missile. the necessity of high maneuverability and vertical launching require thrust vector control additional to aerodynamic control. effectively increasing the alertness of the missile against air defense threats by using that mixture usage of aerodynamic and thrust vector controls. Critical design of guidance and control is difficult and critical due to requirement and the rapidly changing dynamics of this type of missiles. the aim of this paper is to design autopilot with aerodynamics surfaces(fin)and thrust vector control by system characteristics reflection. by using Missile Lebadev Program (MLP) the model is developed based on the configuration of operating missile. Two control systems are aimed, which usages the command trajectory result optimization and the pitch rate controller which tracks real-time guidance command. the guidance and control strategy are developed through an actuation systems and autopilot design in the two channels pitch and roll based on the poles assignment technique. the investigation of the performance of pitch autopilot and its ability to reject disturbances due to cross-coupling between pitch and roll channels showed that, the pitch channel can reject disturbances within average time 3.5 sec. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

We present the design and implementation of a visual search system for real time image retrieval on ***, the world's third largest and China's largest e-commerce site. We demonstrate that our system can support real time visual search with hundreds of billions of product images at sub-second timescales and handle frequent image updates through distributed hierarchical architecture and efficient indexing methods. We hope that sharing our practice with our real production system will inspire the middleware community's interest and appreciation for building practical large scale systems for emerging applications, such as e-commerce visual search.

this paper presents a high power SONAR power amplifier designed and manufactured to drive a specific acoustic transducer. the class D type is chosen as the power amplifier topology due to its high power efficiency and compact design. To be able to increase the power handling capability, a group of identical class D power amplifiers are paralleled when they are driving to same load. the fabricated printed-circuit-board is able to drive the acoustic transducer with a peak-power of around 11 kW and the output signal is a sinusoidal wave at 100 kHz frequency with 2.25% total harmonic distortion. © 2018 IEEE.

the technical implementation of a novel biosensor for the highly parallelized screening of biochemical binding reactions depends on the manufacturing of an array of micro-bowls with a diameter dB ≤ 10 μm with an aspect ratio ar ≥ 1. Since the operating principle of the biosensor is based on the stimulation of stationary optical waves in micro-spheres, micro-bowls for the immobilisation of these spheres in a microfluidic environment are necessary. Due to this operating principle, the micro-bowls need to separate the spheres from the fluid flow and ensure the careful adherence of single spheres, coincidently. Moreover, the pathway for the optical accessibility of the micro spheres should be unrestricted. this work presents a process chain for the manufacturing of microfluidic chips with an array of n ≥ 1,000 micro-spheres by ultra-precision milling of mold inserts, the replication by precision injection molding as well as experimental trial results. With regard to manufacturing of the mold inserts, the uniform and burr free ultraprecision milling of large aspect ratio micro posts was investigated within a parametric study. Furthermore, the replication of the micro-bowls was examined by taking the consistent replication of the entire bowl array, the adverse formation of fillets, and the replication of surfaces with optical functions into special account. By the analysis of the microfluidic and optical properties of the replicated structures, the correlation between mold manufacturing, replication, and operating conditions can be performed. © 2018 CURRAN-conference.
