Designing egocentric 3D hand pose estimation systems that can perform reliably in complex, real-world scenarios is crucial for downstream applications. Previous approaches using RGB or NIR imagery struggle in challenging conditions: RGB methods are susceptible to lighting variations and obstructions like handwear, while NIR techniques can be disrupted by sunlight or interference from other NIR-equipped devices. To address these limitations, we present ThermoHands, the first benchmark focused on thermal image-based egocentric 3D hand pose estimation, demonstrating the potential of thermal imaging to achieve robust performance under these conditions. The benchmark includes a multi-view and multi-spectral dataset collected from 28 subjects performing hand-object and hand-virtual interactions under diverse scenarios, accurately annotated with 3D hand poses through an automated process. We introduce a new baseline method, TherFormer, utilizing dual transformer modules for effective egocentric 3D hand pose estimation in thermal imagery. Our experimental results highlight TherFormer's leading performance and affirm thermal imaging's effectiveness in enabling robust 3D hand pose estimation in adverse conditions.

Code Large Language Models (LLMs) enhance software development efficiency by automatically generating code and documentation based on user requirements. However, code LLMs cannot synthesize specialized programs when tasked with IoT applications that require domain knowledge. While Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) offers a promising solution by fetching relevant domain knowledge, it necessitates powerful cloud LLMs (e.g., GPT-4) to process user requirements and retrieved contents, which raises significant privacy concerns. This approach also suffers from unstable networks and prohibitive LLM query costs. Moreover, it is challenging to ensure the correctness and relevance of the fetched contents. To address these issues, we propose GPIoT, a code generation system for IoT applications by fine-tuning locally deployable Small Language Models (SLMs) on IoT-specialized datasets. SLMs have smaller model sizes, allowing efficient local deployment and execution to mitigate privacy concerns and network uncertainty. Furthermore, by fine-tuning SLMs with our IoT-specialized datasets, the SLMs' ability to synthesize IoT-related programs can be substantially improved. To evaluate GPIoT's capability in synthesizing programs for IoT applications, we develop a benchmark, IoTBench. Extensive experiments and user trials demonstrate the effectiveness of GPIoT in generating IoT-specialized code, outperforming state-of-the-art code LLMs with an average task accuracy increment of 64.7% and significant improvements in user satisfaction.

Edge intelligence applications frequently generate deep learning inference tasks with varying Service Level Objectives (SLO, such as accuracy and real-time requirements). For such tasks, recent progressive inference modes support early exit from different branches to satisfy inference requirements. However, existing edge-cloud progressive neural architectures cannot simultaneously achieve high accuracy and real-time performance for different data features. Therefore, we utilize explainable AI technique to construct and train a novel progressive neural architecture E3. E3 can progressively extract the most important features for inference, ensuring higher accuracy at early-exit points. While the less important features in the later stage are highly compressible, thereby reducing edge-cloud transmission overhead. Furthermore, E3 cooperates with online execution control to launch tasks and decide the exit point for each task, ensuring resource utilization and real-time performance, and adapting to bandwidths and deadlines. Experimental results on various edge-cloud platforms, datasets, and reference models demonstrate that E3 is more lightweight, efficient, energy-saving, and incurs almost no additional runtime overhead compared to traditional architectures. Under stringent deadlines, the average accuracy of tasks increases by > 50%, and the deadline satisfaction rate approaches 100%.

With the exponential growth of data, the demand for effective data analysis tools has increased significantly. R language, known for its statistical modeling and data analysis capabilities, has become one of the most popular programming languages among data scientists and researchers. As the importance of energy-aware software systems continues to rise, several studies investigate the impact of source code and different stages of machine learning model training on energy consumption. However, existing studies in this domain primarily focus on programming languages like Python and Java, resulting in a lack of energy measuring tools for other programming languages such as R. To address this gap, we propose "RJoules", a tool designed to measure the energy consumption of R code snippets. We evaluate the correctness and performance of RJoules by applying it to four machine learning algorithms on three different systems. Our aim is to support developers and practitioners in building energy-aware systems in R. Much of our understanding of congestion control algorithm (CCA) throughput and fairness is derived from models and measurements that (implicitly) assume congestion occurs in the last mile. That is, these studies evaluated CCAs in "small scale" edge settings at the scale of tens of flows and up to a few hundred Mbps bandwidths. However, recent measurements show that congestion can also occur at the core of the Internet on inter-provider links, where thousands of flows share high bandwidth links. Hence, a natural question is: Does our understanding of CCA throughput and fairness continue to hold at the scale found in the core of the Internet, with 1000s of flows and Gbps bandwidths? Our preliminary experimental study finds that some expectations derived in the edge setting do not hold at scale. For example, using loss rate as a parameter to the Mathis model to estimate TCP NewReno throughput works well in edge settings, but does not provide accurate throughput estimates when thousands of flows compete at high bandwidths. In addition, BBR - which achieves good fairness at the edge when competing solely with other BBR flows - can become very unfair to other BBR flows at the scale of the core of the Internet. In this paper, we discuss these results and others, as well as key implications for future CCA analysis and evaluation.

We explore the application of a Sensor Fusion Framework, called SAFE (Simple, Applicable, Extensible, and Flexible) to improve the reliability of measurements obtained from Inertial measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. SAFE is built using a DEVS specification and the Cadmium tool. Measuring angular position is a difficult task due to the unreliability of gyroscopes and accelerometers, two sensors widely used to measure angles. Although angular position can be measured using imaging systems, these are costly, and not ideal for handheld and portable devices. An alternative solution is to use sensor fusion to fuse the readings of both accelerometer and gyroscope, obtaining reliable readings. We show the application of the SAFE methodology and the results of our case study showing the potential of this method.

Microfluidic devices are increasingly used in biological and chemical experiments due to their cost-effectiveness for rheological estimation in fluids. However, these devices often face challenges in terms of accuracy, size, and cost. This study presents a methodology, integrating deep learning, modeling and simulation to enhance the design of microfluidic systems, used to develop an innovative approach for viscosity measurement of polymer melts. We use synthetic data generated from the simulations to train a deep learning model, which then identifies rheological parameters of polymer melts from pressure drop and flow rate measurements in a microfluidic circuit, enabling online estimation of fluid properties. By improving the accuracy and flexibility of microfluidic rheological estimation, our methodology accelerates the design and testing of microfluidic devices, reducing reliance on physical prototypes, and offering significant contributions to the field.

In this paper, we seek to provide guidance on how to empirically collect the information required to plot application points for Intel's Cascadelake XEON processor and Fujitsu's A64FX ARM-based processor. Understanding how to process this information is vital to use the Roofline for empirical performance analysis on these systems. This report is designed to enable users to collect data for these systems and lay the groundwork for us to create a portable method for empirical Roofline-based performance analysis. We do so by presenting our methods and several examples of them in use.

Various software and systems engineering scenarios rely on the systematic construction of consistent graph models. However, automatically generating a diverse set of consistent graph models for complex domain specifications is challenging. First, the graph generation problem must be specified with mathematical precision. Moreover, graph generation is a computationally complex task, which necessitates specialized logic solvers. Refinery is a novel open-source software framework to automatically synthesize a diverse set of consistent domain-specific graph models. The framework offers an expressive high-level specification language using partial models to succinctly formulate a wide range of graph generation challenges. Moreover, it provides a modern cloud-based architecture for a scalable graph solver as a service, which uses logic reasoning rules to efficiently synthesize a diverse set of solutions to graph generation problems by partial model refinement.
