Maintaining and updating signature databases is a tedious task that normally requires a large amount of user effort. The problem becomes harder when features can be distorted by observation noise, which we call volatility. To address this issue, we propose algorithms and models to automatically generate signatures in the presence of noise, with a focus on stack fingerprinting, which is a research area that aims to discover the operating system (OS) of remote hosts using TCP/IP packets. Armed with this framework, we construct a database with 420 network stacks, label the signatures, develop a robust classifier for this database, and fingerprint 66M visible webservers on the Internet.

Accurate measurement of program execution time is indispensable to time-based charge systems and performance debugging in all computersystems. However, cloud application execution time cannot be measured properly because measurement in a virtual machine (VM) includes additional time called steal time. The steal time of each program in a VM is unrecognizable by existing standard operating system (OS) tools. Therefore, it is quite difficult for performance engineers to grasp the accurate execution time of each program in a VM. In this ongoing work, we show the novel point of steal in the broad sense and describe how to compensate for function level execution time in each program in a VM. Our novel approach works by subtracting steal time, which is based on the time-series data of host-level sampling in each function. We implement our approach as a host-level kernel module based on hardware performance counters and some user-level analysis programs. Therefore, our method requires no modification of user applications, guest OSes, a virtual machine monitor (VMM) or a host OS. Finally, our results demonstrate accurate execution time of a function level guest program, with an overhead lower than 1% for practical use.

Over the past decades, various methods, techniques, and tools for modeling and evaluating performance properties of software systems have been proposed covering the entire software life cycle. However, the application of performance engineering approaches to solve a given user concern is still rather challenging and requires expert knowledge and experience. There are no recipes on how to select, configure, and execute suitable methods, tools, and techniques allowing to address the user concerns. In this paper, we describe our vision of Declarative Performance Engineering (DPE), which aims to decouple the description of the user concerns to be solved (performance questions and goals) from the task of selecting and applying a specific solution approach. The strict separation of "what" versus "how" enables the development of different techniques and algorithms to automatically select and apply a suitable approach for a given scenario. The goal is to hide complexity from the user by allowing users to express their concerns and goals without requiring any knowledge about performance engineering techniques. Towards realizing the DPE vision, we discuss the different requirements and propose a reference architecture for implementing and integrating respective methods, algorithms, and tooling.

Occupant comfort and energy cost are the dual, explicit or implicit, objectives of advanced control strategies implemented in smart buildings. Focusing on the former, we present a novel approach for data-driven modeling of user comfort and a path for integrating the resulting models in a generic predictive framework for optimal HVAC control. This offers significant improvement potential over the static scheduling or occupancy based temperature bounds.

Structural monitoring applications such as corrosion assessment, measurement of concrete temperature or moisture content of critical bridge structures can greatly benefit from the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), however energy harvesting for the operation of the network remains a challenge in this setting. We present a multihop vibration-based energy harvesting WSN system for bridge monitoring applications. Our preliminary simulation experiments show that the system is able to maintain energy neutral operation over time, preserving energy with careful management of sleep and communication times.

Real-time PV generation information is crucial for distribution system operations, in particular for switching operations, state-estimation, and management of the voltage at the point of provision. However, most behind-the-meter solar installations are not monitored. Typically, the only information available to the distribution system operator is the installed capacity. Our main purpose in this study is to estimate behind-the-meter PV generation using data from smart meters.

For people with visual impairment, the use of public transportation is a key ingredient to independent quotidian living. However, current electronic travel assistive systems that use GPS for navigation is imprecise to aid blind riders in navigating bus stops [1]. To address this problem, in this poster, we present a vision-based fine-grained bus stop localization system, LastStep, that complements a GPS unit and can localize a bus stop with step-level accuracy. With an evaluation on three subjects, we show that LastStep can localize sites with an error of less than 0.5 meters. Moreover, with the aid of LastStep, subjects can perform this localization at higher success rates and 4 times faster compared to manual searching.
