The proceedings of the acm on measurement and Analysis of Computing systems (POMACS) focuses on the measurement and performance evaluation of computer systems and operates in close collaboration with the acm Special Interest Group sigmetrics. All papers in this issue of POMACS will be presented at the acm sigmetrics/Performance 2024 conference on June 10-14, 2024, in Venice, Italy. These papers have been selected during the summer submission round by the 84 members of the acm sigmetrics/Performance 2024 program committee via a rigorous review process. Each paper was conditionally accepted (and shepherded), allowed a "one-shot" revision (to be resubmitted to one of the subsequent two sigmetrics/Performance deadlines), or rejected (with re-submission allowed after a year). For this issue, which represents the summer deadline, POMACS is publishing 20 papers out of 91 submissions, of which 11 had previously received a one-shot revision decision. All submissions received at least 3 reviews and borderline cases were extensively discussed during the online program committee meeting. Based on the indicated track(s), roughly 27% of the submissions were in the Theory track, 46% were in the measurement & Applied modeling track, 41% were in the systems track, and 14% were in the Learning track. Many individuals contributed to the success of this issue of POMACS. First, we would like to thank the authors, who submitted their best work to sigmetrics/Performance/POMACS. Second, we would like to thank the program committee members who provided constructive feedback in their reviews to authors and participated in the online discussions and program committee meeting. As society progresses, liquid identification plays an increasingly important role in human life. But for now, minority of existing liquid identification solutions on the market can meet daily requirements of being ubiquitous, cost-effective and non-intrusive enough. In this work, we propose ASLiquid, the first liquid counterfeit identification system with commercial off-the-shelf earphones. Our core insight is that earphones can effectively induce acoustic resonance in container, and this phenomenon is observed highly associated with the changes in liquid density and solute compositions. Deploying ASLiquid introduces three main challenges: hardware heterogeneity among different earphones, diversity of user operations, and data complexity due to variations in liquid volume and device placement. To address these issues, we first propose to eliminate the existence of hardware noise and frequency response diversity for an earphone-irrelevant solution. Afterwards, we design a user operation adaptation algorithm to extract valuable feature data during each measurement period. To alleviate problems in data complexity, we propose a spectrum projection algorithm that can effectively generate CFR data of unknown liquid volumes and a VAE based anomaly detection model for counterfeit identification. We evaluate our system with six different earphones and under various conditions. Experimental results reveal that ASLiquid can achieve F1 scores of 95%-99.25% for seven frequently occurring liquid counterfeit tasks, even in specialized attacks on liquids with 1% difference in mass fraction and different types of solutions but with the same density. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).

Various software and systems engineering scenarios rely on the systematic construction of consistent graph models. However, automatically generating a diverse set of consistent graph models for complex domain specifications is challenging. First, the graph generation problem must be specified with mathematical precision. Moreover, graph generation is a computationally complex task, which necessitates specialized logic solvers. Refinery is a novel open-source software framework to automatically synthesize a diverse set of consistent domain-specific graph models. The framework offers an expressive high-level specification language using partial models to succinctly formulate a wide range of graph generation challenges. Moreover, it provides a modern cloud-based architecture for a scalable graph solver as a service, which uses logic reasoning rules to efficiently synthesize a diverse set of solutions to graph generation problems by partial model refinement. Assessing urban infrastructure and environment quality at scale remains a challenge. This work presents a multimodal sensing framework that integrates computer vision-based infrastructure analysis with mobile air quality monitoring to explore urban conditions beyond the camera's field of view. A vehicle-mounted system captures video data for semantic segmentation of roads and buildings while an air intake unit collects temperature, humidity, CO2, TVOC, and AQI levels. A preliminary test drive in Ann Arbor demonstrated expected correlations between CO2 and TVOC spikes in dense urban areas, providing a proof of concept for linking environmental sensing with visual urban analysis. Future work will refine sensor calibration, adaptive sampling strategies, and predictive modeling to improve accuracy and scalability.

The advancement of self-driving technology is driven by the need for robust and efficient perception systems along with frameworks for End-to-End testing, enabled by the CARLA simulator. We introduce C-Shenron, a novel integration of a realistic radar sensor model within CARLA, enabling researchers to develop and test navigation algorithms using radar data. It is the first realistic radar simulator which utilizes LiDAR and camera sensors to generate high-fidelity radar ADC measurements from physics based modeling of the environment. Utilizing this radar sensor and showcasing its capabilities in simulation, we demonstrate improved performance in end-to-end driving scenarios. Our setup aims to rekindle the interest in radar-based self-driving research and promote the development of algorithms that leverages its strengths.

In modern HPC systems, performance measurements are often disturbed by noise. Because repeating measurements to increase confidence in their results is costly, alternative noise-resilient techniques are desirable. Therefore, we implement a logical clock, which does not rely on real-time measurements, in Score-P. We explore several methods to model computational work with the clock increment, counting OpenMP loop iterations, LLVM basic blocks/statements, or hardware counters. We demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of using logical time stamps in a trace analysis workflow with Score-P and Scalasca, by evaluating the performance problems we can find in three MPI+OpenMP mini-apps. By design, logical measurements reliably show algorithmic issues, such as load imbalance, but cannot capture external aspects of program execution, for example memory contention. In summary, logical-time based measurements are a specialized but valuable addition to the performance analyst's toolbox. © 2024 IEEE.

A new mobile computing paradigm, dubbed mini-app, has been growing rapidly over the past few years since being introduced by WeChat in 2017. In this paradigm, a host app allows its end-users to install and run mini-apps inside itself, enabling the host app to build an ecosystem around (much like Google Play and Apple AppStore), enrich the host's functionalities, and offer mobile users elevated convenience without leaving the host app. It has been reported that there are over millions of mini-apps in WeChat. However, little information is known about these mini-apps at an aggregated level. In this paper, we present MiniCrawler, the first scalable and open-source WeChat mini-app crawler that has indexed over 1,333,308 mini-apps. It leverages a number of reverse engineering techniques to uncover the interfaces and APIs in WeChat for crawling the mini-apps. With the crawled mini-apps, we then measure the resource consumption, API usage, library usage, obfuscation rate, app categorization, and app ratings at an aggregated level in this work. © 2021 Owner/Author.

This paper presents a practical approach to cache eviction algorithm design, called Mobius, that optimizes the concurrent throughput of caches and reduces cache operation latency by utilizing lock-free data structures, while maintaining high cache hit ratios. Mobius includes two key designs. First, Mobius employs two lock-free FIFO queues to manage cache items, ensuring that all cache operations are executed efficiently in concurrency. Second, Mobius integrates a consecutive detection mechanism that merges multiple modifications during eviction into a single operation, thereby reducing data races. The implementation of Mobius in CacheLib and RocksDB highlights its high concurrency in both synthetic and real-world workloads.

Ensuring data integrity for petabyte-scale file transfers is critical for scientific applications. As packet sizes increase, so does the likelihood of undetected errors. Multi-Level Error Detection (MLED) is a recursive architecture that leverages in-network resources to reduce undetected error probability (UEP) in file transfer. MLED organizes communication in layers at different levels, with each layer implementing configurable policies. Through experimentation on the FABRIC testbed, we show that while the traditional---transport and data link layer---error detection results in corrupt file transfers requiring retransmission, MLED detects and corrects these errors at intermediate levels, when an adversarial error model is used. MLED thus achieves a 100% gain in goodput reaching over 800 Mbps on a single connection with no appreciable increase in delay.
