Given a collection of geo-tagged objects with associated textual descriptors, the spatio-textual similarity join (STJoin) problem is to identify all pairs of similar objects that are close in distance. This task, which is useful in localized recommendations and other applications, is challenging since computing the join is super-linear with respect to the size of the collection. In this paper, we explore partitioning strategies for tackling STJoin. One approach is to start with a spatial data structure, traverse regions and apply a previous algorithm for identifying similar pairs of textual documents called All-Pairs. An alternative approach is to construct a global index but partition postings spatially and modify the All-Pairs algorithm to prune candidates based on distance. We evaluate these approaches on two real-world datasets and find that when running in a single thread, both approaches are comparable in terms of performance. However, a multithreaded implementation of the global index approach is able to achieve far better speedup given its ability to parallelize at a finer granularity to avoid skewed distributions in task sizes. In addition to using All-Pairs as the underlying textual similarity join algorithm, we also explored an alternate algorithm known as PPJ: our findings are consistent, which suggests that load balancing is a fundamental issue affecting parallel implementations of STJoin algorithms. © 3rd ACM SIGSPATIAL internationalworkshop on Analytics for Big Geospatial Data (BigSpatial) 2014.

Crowd-sourcing has become a popular means of acquiring labeled data for many tasks where humans are more accurate than computers, such as image tagging, entity resolution, and sentiment analysis. However, due to the time and cost of human labor, solutions that rely solely on crowd-sourcing are o?en limited to small datasets (i.e., a few thousand items). This paper proposes algorithms for integrating machine learning into crowd-sourced databases in order to combine the accuracy of human labeling with the speed and coste ?ectiveness of machine learning classifiers. By using active learning as our optimization strategy for labeling tasks in crowd-sourced databases, we can minimize the number of questions asked to the crowd, allowing crowd-sourced applications to scale (i.e., labelmuch larger datasets at lower costs). Designing active learning algorithms for a crowd-sourced database posesmany practical challenges: such algorithms need to be generic, scalable, and easy to use, even for practitioners who are notmachine learning experts. We draw on the theory of nonparametric bootstrap to design, to the best of our knowledge, the first active learning algorithms that meet all these requirements. Our results, on 3 real-world datasets collected with AmazonsMechanical Turk, and on UCI datasets, show that our methods on average ask 1-2 orders of magnitude fewer questions than the baseline, and 4.5-44× fewer than existing active learning algorithms. © 2014 VLDB Endowment 2150-8097/14/10.

Large scale integration of stochastic energy resources in power systems requires probabilistic analysis approaches for comprehensive system analysis. The large-varying grid condition on the aging and stressed power system infrastructures also requires merging of offline security analyses into online operation. Meanwhile in computing, the recent rapid hardware performance growth comes from the more and more complicated architecture. Fully utilizing the computing power for specific applications becomes very difficult. Given the challenges and opportunities in both the power system and the computing fields, this paper presents the unique commodity high performance computing system solutions to the following fundamental tools for power system probabilistic and security analysis: 1) a high performance Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) based distribution probabilistic load flow solver for real-time distribution feeder probabilistic solutions. 2) A high performance MCS based transmission probabilistic load flow solver for transmission grid probabilistic analysis. 3) A SIMD accelerated AC contingency calculation solver based on Woodbury matrix identity on multi-core CPUs. By aggressive algorithm level and computer architecture level performance optimizations including optimized data structures, optimization for superscalar out-of-order execution, SIMDization, and multi-core scheduling, our software fully utilizes the modern commodity computing systems, makes the critical and computational intensive power system probabilistic and security analysis problems solvable in real-time on commodity computing systems. © 2013 ACM.

This paper investigates the power, energy, and performance characteristics of large-scale graph processing on hybrid (i.e., CPU and GPU) single-node systems. Graph processing can be accelerated on hybrid systems by properly mapping the graph-layout to processing units, such that the algorithmic tasks exercise each of the units where they perform best. However, the GPUs have much higher Thermal Design Power (TDP), thus their impact on the overall energy consumption is unclear. Our evaluation using large real-world graphs and synthetic graphs as large as 1 billion vertices and 16 billion edges shows that a hybrid system is efficient in terms of both time-to-solution and energy. © 2013 ACM.

Despite being one of the most important limiting factors on the road to exascale computing, power is not yet considered a "first-class citizen" among the system resources. As a result, there is no clear OS interface that exposes accurate resource power consumption to user-level runtimes that implement power-aware software algorithms. In this work we propose a System Monitor Interface (SMI) between the OS and the user runtime that exposes accurate, per-core power consumption. To make up for the lack of reliable per-core power sensors, we implement a proxy power sensor, based on a regression analysis of core activity, that provides per-core information. SMI effectively hides the implementation details from the user, who has the perception of reading power information from a real sensor. This allows us these proxy sensors to be replaced with real hardware sensors when the latter becomes available, without the need to modify user-level software. Using SMI and the proxy power sensors, we implement a power profiling runtime library and analyzed applications from the NPB benchmark suite and the Exascale Co-Design Centers. Our results show that accurate, per-core power information is necessary for the development of exascale system software and for comprehensively understanding the power characteristics of parallel scientific applications. © 2013 ACM.

Smart-devices with information sharing capabilities anytime and anywhere have opened a wide range of ubiquitous applications. Within urban environments citizens have a plethora of locations to choose from, and in the advent of the smart-cities paradigm, this is the scope of location-based recommender systems to provide citizens with the adequate suggestions. In this work we present the design of an in-situ location-based recommender system, where the venue recommendations are built upon the users' location at request-time, but also incorporating the social dimension and the expertise of the neighboring users knowledge used to build the recommendations. Moreover, we propose a specific easy-to-deploy architecture, that bases its functioning in the participatory social media platforms such as Twitter or Foursquare. Our system constructs its knowledge base from the accesible data in Foursquare, and similarly obtains ratings from geopositioned tweets. © 2013 IJCAI.

Rapid development in the field of smartphones over past years has enabled using their multimedia capabilities in virtually reconstructing and visualizing architectural objects by creating 3D-models of such objects. Several authors have tested cell phone cameras accuracy. We present a method for proximity detection with mobile phones that is based on a combination of Bluetooth communication (for the detection of coarse proximity) and sound beacons in an inaudible spectrum around 18kHz for a finer spatial resolution. The system performs a real-time recognition of personal encounters in two common situations: standing together and walking by each other. We evaluate our approach in a variety of settings ranging from office corridor, through a busy street to a shopping mall. © 2012 ACM.

Sensor networks enable large scale and fine resolution monitoring via interconnected sensor devices that range from home appliances and mobile phones to dedicated sensing platforms. While new wireless technologies are emerging, the challenge is in the interpretation and utilization of heterogeneous data received through varying types of interfaces. This paper presents a unified service access architecture, interfaces, and message formats for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) collectively referred to as WSN OpenAPI. It supports sensor data collection, actuator control, real-time alerts based on sensor values, and querying measurement and alert history. Compared to the related work, WSN OpenAPI allows efficient machine-to-machine (M2M) communications with low complexity message formats and avoiding extensive queries with publish/subscribe paradigm. © 2012 IEEE.
