We discuss here the emergent Web based distributed environments for HPCC on the NII withthe focus on Java as an enabling technology. We start with a review of the past, presence and the near term future of the 'Java phenomenon', exposed here in the background of some related previous approaches towards a distributed interpretative virtual machine architecture.

Climate models to study phenomena such as El Nino have been extremely useful in developing predictions and understanding global climate change. the high cost of running extended simulations necessary to substantiate theories can be reduced by using a network of supercomputers. A coupled ocean-atmosphere model has been implemented on a network of three Cray supercomputers.

UbiWorld is a concept that ties together the notion of Ubiquitous computing (Ubicomp) withthat of using virtual reality for rapid prototyping. the goal is to develop an environment where one can explore Ubicomp type concepts without having to build real Ubicomp hardware. the basic notion is to extend object models in a virtual world using distributed wide area heterogeneous computing technology to provide complex networking and processing capabilities to virtual reality objects.

Networks of workstations provide an economic solution for scalable computing because they do not require specialized components. Even though recent advances have shown that it is possible to obtain high bandwidth between applications, interconnect latency remains a serious concern. In this paper we present CNI, a cluster network interface that not only provides both low latency and high bandwidth but also efficiently supports multiple programming paradigms. this is done by functionally coupling the network adaptor board more closely to the CPU without changing the standard workstation architecture. CNI results in performance gains for applications, substantially reducing communication overhead and delay.

We argue that future computing environments will be collaboration oriented, globally distributed, and computation information rich. these environments will be accessed via multiple interface devices. As we move from a desktop-centric computing model to a network-centric model, new approaches in the way software and data are handled will need to be developed. In this article we outline the requirements for enabling the technological infrastructure, describe some first steps that we have taken toward building this infrastructure, and sketch directions for future development.

A universal spatial automaton, called WAVE, for highly parallel processing in arbitrary distributed systems is described. the automaton is based on a virus principle where recursive programs, or waves, self-navigate in networks of data or processes in multiple cooperative parts while controlling and modifying the environment they exist in and move through. the layered general organisation of the automaton as well as its distributed implementation in computer networks have been discussed. As the automaton dynamically creates, modifies, activates and processes any knowledge networks arbitrarily distributed in computer networks, it can easily model any other paradigms for parallel and distributedcomputing. Comparison of WAVE with some known programming models and languages, and ideas of their possible integration have also been given.

this paper studies different schemes to enhance the reliability, availability and security of a high-performancedistributed storage system. We have previously designed a distributed parallel storage system that employs the aggregate bandwidth of multiple data servers connected by a high-speed wide-area network to achieve scalability and high data throughput. the general approach of this paper employs erasure error correcting codes to add data redundancy that can be used to retrieve missing information caused by hardware, software, or human faults. the paper suggests techniques for reducing the communication and computation overhead incurred while retrieving missing data blocks form redundant information. these techniques include clustering, multidimensional coding, and the full two-dimensional parity scheme.

In this paper we present Skil, an imperative language enhanced withhigher-order functions and currying, as well as with a polymorphic type system. the high level of Skil allows the integration of algorithmic skeletons, i.e. of higher-order functions representing parallel computation patterns. At the same time, the language can be efficiently implemented. After describing a series of skeletons which work withdistributed arrays, we give two examples of parallel programs implemented on the basis of skeletons, namely shortest paths in graphs and Gaussian elimination. Run-time measurements show that we approach the efficiency of message-passing C up to a factor between 1 and 2.5.
