We present HyFlow - a distributed software transactional memory (D-STM) framework for distributed concurrency control. HyFlow is a Java framework for D-STM, with pluggable support for directory lookup protocols, transactional synchronization and recovery mechanisms, contention management policies, cache coherence protocols, and network communication protocols. HyFlow exports a simple distributed programming model that excludes locks: using (Java 5) annotations, atomic sections are defined as transactions, in which reads and writes to shared, local and remote objects appear to take effect instantaneously. No changes are needed to the underlying virtual machine or compiler. We describe HyFlow's architecture and implementation, and report on experimental studies comparing HyFlow against competing models including Java remote method invocation (RMI) with mutual exclusion and read/write locks, distributed shared memory (DSM), and directory-based D-STM. Our studies show that HyFlow outperforms competitors by as much as 40-190% on a broad range of transactional workloads on a 72-node system, with more than 500 concurrent transactions.

this paper presents VMFlockMS, a migration service optimized for cross-datacenter transfer and instantiation of groups of virtual machine (VM) images that comprise an application-level solution (e.g., a three-tier web application). We dub these groups of related VM images VMFlocks. VMFlockMS employs two main techniques: first, data deduplication within the VMFlock to be migrated, and among the VMs in the VMFlock and the data already present at the destination datacenter. Second, accelerated instantiation of the application at the target datacenter after transferring only a partial set of data blocks and prioritization of the remaining data based on previously observed access patterns originating from the running VMs. VMFlockMS is designed to be deployed as a set of virtual appliances which make efficient use of the available cloud resources to locally access and deduplicate the images and data in a distributed fashion with minimal requirements imposed on the cloud API to access the VM image repository. VMFlockMS provides an incrementally scalable and high-performance migration service. Our evaluation shows that VMFlockMS can reduce the data volumes to be transferred over the network to as low as 3% of the original VMFlock size, enables the complete transfer of the VM images belonging to a VMFlock over transcontinental link up to 3.5x faster than alternative approaches, and enables booting these VM images with as little as 5% of the compressed VMFlock data available at the destination.

Emerging large-scale systems have many nodes with several processors per node and multiple cores per processor. these systems require effective task distribution between cores, processors and nodes to achieve high levels of performance and utilization. Current scheduling strategies distribute tasks between cores according to a count of available cores, but ignore the execution time and energy implications of task aggregation (i.e., grouping multiple tasks within the same node or the same multicore processor). Task aggregation can save significant energy while sustaining or even improving performance. However, choosing an effective task aggregation becomes more difficult as the core count and the options available for task placement increase. We present a framework to predict the performance effect of task aggregation in both computation and communication phases and its impact in terms of execution time and energy of MPI programs. Our results for the NPB 3.2 MPI benchmark suite show that our framework provides accurate predictions leading to substantial energy saving through aggregation (64.87% on average and up to 70.03%) with tolerable performance loss (under 5%). © 2010 ieee.

Unsupervised data exploration techniques are used for extracting relational and structural information from massifs of data. In this paper we explore a collection of ACM transactions and ieee conferences related by the subject of high performance distributed computing - with a scientific computing flavor in order to understand how they relate to each other. the interpreted result is proved reasonable and is defined by groups of conferences and transactions which can be scaled by their degree of abstractness and physical realization.

HLA-based simulations, as any distributed computing application, can undergo critical performance issues due to load imbalances on large-scale, heterogeneous, non-dedicated distributed systems. Such imbalances are produced by HLA simulation entities that can dynamically change their computation and communication load during their execution time, so an initial static load deployment is incapable of providing simulations complete and even distributed resources usage. Moreover, because the computing resources are non-dedicated, unknown external applications can generate load for any computing resource, increasing the imbalances' unpredictability. thus, in order to re-allocate resources for an HLA simulation during its execution time, an hierarchical dynamic load balancing system is introduced. the system manages a simulation's workload by monitoring the distributed load through the MDS Grids' service;by identifying load imbalances according to a load sharing policy;by re-allocating resources according to defined policies;and by migrating federates through the GRAM Grids' service, a migration proxy, and peer-to-peer state transfer. By keeping the load evenly partitioned on the distributed system, such a devised system successfully improved the simulations' performance. the experimental results and comparative analyses between balanced and non-balanced simulations proved the efficiency of the proposed dynamic load balancing system.

Sensor network integrates sensor technology, MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical system) technology, embedded computing, wireless communication technology and distributed information management technology. It is of great value to use it where human is quite difficult to reach. Power consumption and size are the most important consideration when nodes are designed for distributed WSN (wireless sensor networks). Consequently, it is of great importance to decrease the size of a node, reduce its power consumption and extend its life in network. WSN nodes have been designed using JN5121-Z01-M01 module produced by jennic company and ieee 802.15.4/ZigBee technology. Its new features include support for CPU sleep modes and a long-term ultra low power sleep mode for the entire node. In low power configuration the node resembles existing small low power nodes. An embedded temperature sensor node has been developed to verify and explore our architecture. the experiment results indicate that the WSN has the characteristic of high reliability, good stability and ultra low power consumption.

Dynamic load balancing is a key factor in achieving high performance for large scale distributed simulations on grid infrastructures. In a grid environment, the available resources and the simulation's computation and communication behavior may experience run-time critical imbalances. Consequently, an initial static partitioning should be combined with a dynamic load balancing scheme to ensure the high performance of the distributed simulation. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic load balancing scheme for distributed simulations on a grid infrastructure. Our scheme is composed of an online network analyzing service coupled with monitoring agents and a run-time model repartitioning service. We present a hierarchical scalable adaptive JXTA service based scheme and demonstrate through simulation experiments that our proposed scheme exhibits better performance in terms of the simulation execution time.

As a variety of science applications are integrated with large-scale HPDC (high performance distributed computing) technologies, timely resource allocation is revealed as a critical requirement to be considered this paper introduces a new HPDC resource management paradigm named resource slot which defines a network of logical machines across time and space. A resource slot is not only a resource programming target but also a virtualized resource provisioning framework for a variety of resource management paradigms by encapsulating the resource, management complexity. Especially, we present a resource provisioning technique named guided redundant submission (GRS), which probabilistically guarantees a timely resource slot allocation. Experimental results performed against 8 clusters in production show that about 5 redundant resources per slot can secure slot allocation with up to 36 logical machines, each cluster having an availability probability as low as 0.25 and the target success probability of slot allocation is 0.95.

the routing protocol of structured peer-to-peer overlay networks influences the p2p network performances in route table maintenance, routing hops, and network churning. Current protocols we used usually maintain a 0(logN) route table and O(togN) routing hops. To get better routing speed with less scale routing table, using O(l) node finger to get O(N) route path, a new protocol named CSSP was presented A short routing table was made to record "L" cache nodes, one super node and one successor node. Algorithms for maintaining the route table was presented in this paper, A selection algorithm was presented to select the super node who could cache all of the nodes. And the cache-nodes, super-node and successor-node ensure the high performance of the CSSP. Compared to chord, pastry and etc., the CSSP increases the performance in routing table maintaining, routing hops, fault-tolerance and the amount of churning nodes while some nodes inject and eject the CSSP p2p system. the simulations and analysis shows that the CSSP is an efficient route algorithm, but also some problems waiting for further study.
