We propose a specification and verification method for distributed systems. We can easily specify fairness and timing constraints, and can effectively verify distributed systems by our proposed method. in order to specify fairness, an enable condition and a performed condition are attached to a finite set of states in our proposed specification method. in order to effectively verify distributed systems, we restrict the timing constraints of the timed automaton and specify timing constraints of the clock variables after they are reset to zero. We have developed a verification system based on our proposed method, and have shown its effectiveness with the timed alternating bit protocol.

A number of solutions have been proposed for the problem of mutual exclusion in distributed systems. Some of these approaches have since been extended to a prioritized environment suitable for real-time applications but impose a higher message passing overhead than our approach. We present a new protocol for prioritized mutual exclusion in a distributed environment. our approach uses a token-based model working on a logical tree structure, which is dynamically modified. in addition, we utilize a set of local queues whose union would resemble a single global queue. the prioritized algorithm has an average overhead of o(log(n)) messages per request for mutual exclusion with a worst-case overhead of o(n), where n represents the number of nodes in the system. thus, our prioritized algorithm matches the message complexity of the best non-prioritized algorithms while previous prioritized algorithms have a higher message complexity, to our knowledge. Furthermore, the concept of local queues can be incorporated into arbitrary token-based protocols with or without priority support to reduce the amount of messages.

Several distributed applications are characterized by real-time constraints on response times. High-level actions in such distributed applications are modeled by nonatomic events which are collections of atomic events. this paper studies synchronization relations between nonatomic events in such distributed real-time application executions. the relations form a fine-grained hierarchy that can be used to select suitable relations with good properties and clear intuitions, depending on the application. We show the use of the proposed relations in specifying solutions for distributed mutual exclusion and in specifying distributed predicates. As an example of an application, we show how a real-time air defence system that needs to enforce distributed mutual exclusion and specify and evaluate distributed predicates can use the proposed relations.

Command and control systems exist in a world of constantly shifting demands and expectations; therefore, producing scalable, evolvable systems has always been a priority of system designers. However the need to meet performance requirements has often been a restraint on scalability goals. Advances in the speed and capacity of computational and communications equipment have substantially increased the range of scalability that can be achieved while still meeting performance requirements. the High Performance distributed Computing Program (HiPer-D) has demonstrated a design for the AEGiS weapons system, which is close to achieving the full range of operational requirements while providing scalability along several dimensions. this paper discusses the HiPer-D design, its context, development, and efforts to achieve system level performance.

this paper describes how use cases can be applied to the architectural design of distributed real-time applications. in order to benefit from use cases in distributed real-time design it is necessary to extend use cases, particularly in the design phase, when important design decisions need to be made. To achieve this, use cases are integrated with CoDARTS (Concurrent Design Approach for Real-Time systems) distributed design concepts. three different categories of use cases are described here, client/server use cases, subscription use cases and real-time control use cases. Different forms of message communication are associated with the different use case types. the overall design of the distributed real-time system is achieved by composing it from the use cases.

Development of distributed real-time applications requires tools and methods ranging from the design process down to the run-time system. this paper describes an approach towards an integrated object-oriented real-time environment, providing a new conceptual structuring method, distributed dynamic scheduling, and a real-time executive, based on a standard real-time operating system. TaskPairs are introduced as a method for structuring distributed object-oriented applications that consist of a mix of hard-, soft- and non-real-time jobs. From this language level structure the compiler and a run-time monitor create an abstract representation of the system's objects, their dependencies, and their actual timing behaviour. Based on this information about the current system state the distributed resource management dynamically tries to construct a feasible schedule.

Due to the complex functionality of large control systems, many different application domains are involved in their implementation. Despite this diversity, modern control systems are implemented according to the (conventional) imperative programming model. Multi-paradigm programming is an approach toward system development that is based on more than one programming model. By choosing a domain-specific paradigm for each of the application domains involved, the expected advantage is a less intensive and less error-prone development process. this paper discusses the application of multi-paradigm programming to large distributed control systems. the benefits are illustrated by experimental applications in the context of naval command-and-control systems. To solve the problem of paradigm integration, a software architecture for distributed control systems is introduced that supports multi-paradigm programming. the architecture is shown to be compositional and open to new paradigms.

this paper introduces a window theory of local image processing (iP). An associated framework for mapping local iP algorithms onto local iP systems is presented. the window theory relies on two fundamental concepts: image windows and window operators. the starting point of the mapping methodology is thereby the local iP algorithm specifications in the form of instruction sequences referring to window operators as macro-instructions. the target system architecture is a local iP system architecture, consisting of a PoM-processor array as coprocessor and a VLiW-processor as PoM-Front-End. the main features of this mapping framework can be summarized as follows: optimality through execution time minimization of the given local iP algorithm, tractability of the underlying iLP-model, globality through quantification of all hardware resource requirements and real-time compatibility.

the scheduling of tasks in distributed real-time systems has attracted many researchers in the recent past. the distributed real-time system considered here consists of uniprocessor or multiprocessor nodes connected through a multihop network. Scheduling in such a system involves scheduling of dynamically arriving tasks within a node (local scheduling) and migration of tasks across the network (global scheduling) if it is not possible to schedule them locally. Most of the existing schemes on distributed real-time task scheduling ignore the underlying message scheduling required for global scheduling of tasks. these schemes consider the load on the processors at a node as the basis to migrate tasks from a heavily loaded node (sender) to a lightly loaded node (receiver). We believe that the identification of a receiver node should be based not only on the load on its processors, but also on the availability of a lightly loaded path from the sender to that receiver. in this paper we present an integrated framework for distributed real-time dynamic task scheduling (i) by proposing algorithms for transfer location, and information policies which take into account the states of both the processors and the links, and (ii) by proposing interactions among these policies and schedulers so that the guarantee ratio (ratio of number of tasks guaranteed to the number of tasks arrived) is improved as compared to algorithms where only local scheduling is done. For local scheduling, we use a variation of myopic algorithm. the effectiveness of the proposed framework has been evaluated through simulation.

the most important goal in hard real-time systems is to guarantee that all timing constraints are satisfied. Even though object-based techniques (which contain reusable software components) are used to manage the complexity in the software development process of such systems, execution efficiency may have to be sacrificed, due to the large number of procedure calls and contention for accessing software components. these issues are addressed by the following parallelizing techniques: converting potentially inefficient procedure calls to a source of concurrency via asynchronous remote procedure calls (ARPC); and replicating (or cloning) software components to reduce the contention. the existing object-based scheduling algorithms construct an initial schedule and apply incremental parallelization techniques to modify the initial schedule until a feasible schedule is generated. these algorithms are applicable for scheduling only multiple independent tasks. this paper describes a pre-run-time scheduling algorithm for a set of periodic object-based tasks having precedence constraints among them. the algorithm employs parallelism exploitation techniques to guarantee timeliness in almost fully predictable environments such as factory automation, aerospace, and avionics. it allocates the components of object-based periodic tasks to the sites of a distributed system based on a clustering heuristic which takes into account the ARPC parallelism and load balancing, and schedules them on respective sites.
