Recent advances in high-speed networks, rapid improvements in microprocessor design, and availability of highly performing clustering software implementations enables cost-effective high-performance parallel computing on clustered low cost workstations and PCs. Such clusters are very attractive because they rely on available of the shelf hardware and software technologies, To simplify programming in network environments and to realise component-based software architectures, many models have emerged as possible standards, namely, RPC: Remote Procedure Call, DCE: distributed computing Environment, DCOM: distributed Component Object Model, CORBA: Common Object Request Broker Architecture, PVM: parallel Virtual Machine and MPI: Message Passing Interface. The MPI approach is considered one of the most mature methods currently used in parallel programming. MPI implementations on emerging cluster interconnects are an important requirement for useful parallel processing on cost-effective computer clusters. This paper offers an overview of different parallel computing environments and models. Functionality and performance of MPI running on ho,homogeneous and heterogeneous workstation clusters are compared. The project goals, laboratory environment, performance measurements, future work, and a conclusion are presented.

Technological advances in processor power, networking, tetecommunication and multimedia are stimulating the development of applications requiring parallel and distributed computing. This new perspective excites the research of new design methodologies that view the software as an "intelligent" collection of agents that interact by coordinating knowledge-based processes. Here we present an actor-based workflow! architecture that would fit naturally to the distributed heterogeneous environments. Actors combine object-oriented and functional programming in order to make the management of concurrency easier for the user.

advances in networks and the availability of low-cost PCs and workstations has resulted in PC/workstation clusters being used as a computer environment that replaces parallel computers. These clusters recently comprise different kinds of nodes and are connected over different kinds of networks, such as Ethernet and Myrinet. They are called distributed heterogeneous systems, and efficient collective communication operations for them have been studied. We propose heuristic scheduling algorithms for efficient gather operations in distributed heterogeneous systems, and we present the results of simulations evaluating their performance. These results show that gather operations scheduled by these algorithms are more efficient than sequential gather operations in these systems. They also show that, the efficiency of gather operations scheduled by the algorithms depends on the ratio of the cost that depends on message size in point-to-point communication to the cost that does not depend on message size in point-to-point communication.

advances in storage and high-speed broadband communication network technologies are making it feasible to design and implement distributed scalable video-on-demand server networks. In this paper a hierarchical structure for a server network is proposed to support a metropolitan TV-Anytime service. A key issue, how to map the media assets onto such a hierarchical server network, is addressed in this paper. The definition and heuristic methods for the solution of this new combinatorial optimization problem are presented. The mapping problem studied here addresses the management of media assets taking the storage capacity, communication bandwidth limitation and access pattern into account. The methods presented in this paper are based on parallel simulated annealing and are verified by the use of a set of benchmark instances. The results show that the methods provide a near to optimal performance in terms of the Quality of Service (QoS).

The coming millennium will be characterized by the availability of multiple information appliances that make ubiquitous information access an accepted fact of life. The ability to access and transform information via a multiplicity of appliances, each designed to suit the user's specific usage environment, requires the exploitation of all available input and output modalities to maximize the band-width of man-machine communication. There will be an increasingly strong demand for devices that present the same set of functionalities when accessing and manipulating the information, independently of the access device. The resulting uniform interface must be inherently multi-modal and dialog driven. This paper addresses the challenges of coordinated, synchronized multimodal user interaction that is inherent in designing user interfaces that work across these multiplicity of information appliances. Amongst the key issues to be addressed are the user's ability to interact in parallel with the same information via a multiplicity of appliances and user interfaces, and the need to present a unified, synchronized view of information across the various appliances that the user deploys to interact with information. We achieve such synchronized interactions and views by adopting the well-known Model, View, Controller (MVC) design paradigm and adapting it to conversational interactions. The resulting conversational MVC (CMVC) is to be considered as the key underlying principle of any conversational multi-modal application.

Collaborative services and applications are becoming increasingly important and complex, and have requirements for real-time multimedia support, high bandwidth availability and low delays. The collaborative application view of QoS encompasses the transport network and the end systems, as well as computational requirements. Therefore, how to coordinate and integrate collaboration management and network resource sharing efficiently and effectively is becoming more complex: a higher-level functionality is required in parallel with a satisfying performance. The functionality should satisfy the requirements of different levels of collaboration and respect a hierarchy of priorities among users and tasks. The performance, depending on the application or the network, should be sufficient for real-time information exchange, which is quite often a "heavy data exchange". We have developed a management framework to satisfy the complex functionality requirements that arise in the development of collaborative applications and services. The emphasis in designing such a framework is given on several levels of design that affect the performance of collaboration environments, the connection management, the replication management, the data management and the effective and interoperable usage of resources. Based on the proposed framework, we present a Java-based application for mission planning.
