On distributed shared memory (DSM) system, the optimization of memory access is very important for achieving good performance. In this paper we propose an optimizing compiler which controls a software cache system implemented on DSM. The software cache consists of static part related with compiler and dynamic part related with cache-managing runtime routines. Our compiler controls static part of the software cache by using information from static analysis. For applications whose behavior can only be dynamically determined, the compiler uses dynamic part of the software cache. We also propose application of RISC-oriented optimization techniques to parallel applications on our software cache system. We evaluate the efficiency of our compiler and RISC-oriented optimization techniques on distributedparallel machine, CM-5. Our results show that the compiler and the optimizations considerably improve the performance of basic linear algebra routines: matrix multiply, Cholesky decomposition and Gaussian elimination.

We discuss applications of high resolution geostationary satellite imagery and distributed high performance computing facilities for the storage, processing and delivery of satellite data products. We describe our system which is built on a distributed high performance computing environment using a number of software infrastructural building blocks and computational resources interconnected by an ATM-based broadband network. distributed High Performance computing hardware technology underpins our proposed system. In particular, we discuss the capabilities of a distributed hardware environment incorporating: high bandwidth communications networks such as Telstra's Experimental Broadband Network (EBN);large capacity hierarchical storage systems;and high performance parallelcomputing resources. We also describe a recent demonstration of our project resources to the remote-sensing user community.

Summary form only given, as follows. While digital device and digital information become immersive, internet computing as a discipline is at a turning point. Modern computing and communication systems are unprecedented powerful and, in the meantime, unprecedented complex. On one hand, new computing paradigms, such as cloud computing, internet of things, cyberinfrastructure, and data centric computing, continue emerging to utilize technological advances. On the other hand, timely challenges, such as reliability, security, power consumption, and coordination and consistency, have to be addressed to meet the ever increasing user demand. High performance computing (HPC) is moving from Peta-flops era to Exa-scale era. How the changing will influence data center based distributedcomputing, and vice visa. We are at a historical point to ask: what are the challenges and opportunities of HPC-based distributed systems? This is especially true for Far East, where China just historically reached the first place on the HPC top500 list and launched a unique program in Internet of Things. This panel invites outstanding leaders around the world to explore deliberations regarding the strategic value of HPC-based distributed systems and discuss disruptive technologies and innovations most likely to overturn today’s internet computing landscape. A record of the panel discussion was not made available for publication as part of the conferenceproceedings.

While shared-nothing parallel infrastructures provide fast processing of explosively growing digital content, managing data efficiently across multiple nodes is important. The value-range partitioning method with parallel B-tree structures in a shared-nothing environment is an efficient approach for handling large amounts of data. To handle large amounts of data, it is also important to provide an efficient concurrency control protocol for the parallel B-tree. Many studies have proposed concurrency control protocols for B-trees, which use latch-coupling. None of these studies has considered that latch-coupling contains a performance bottleneck of sending of messages between processing elements (PEs) in distributed environments because latch-coupling is efficient for a B-tree on a single machine. The only protocol without latch-coupling is the B-link algorithm, but it is difficult to use the B-link algorithm directly on an entire parallel B-tree structure because it is necessary to guarantee the consistency of the side pointers. We propose a new concurrency control protocol named LCFB that requires no latch-coupling in optimistic processes. LCFB reduces the amount of communication between PEs during a B-tree traversal. To detect access path errors in the LCFB protocol caused by removal of latch-coupling, we assign boundary values to each index page. Because a page split may cause page deletion in a Fat-Btree, we also propose an effective method for handling page deletions without latch-coupling. We then combine LCFB with the B-link algorithm within each PE to reduce the cost of Structure Modification Operations (SMOs) in a PE, as a solution to the difficulty of consistency management for the side pointers in a parallel B-tree structure. To compare the performance of the proposed protocol with conventional protocols MARK-OPT, INC-OPT, and ARIES/IM, we implemented them on an autonomous disk system with a Fat-Btree structure. Driven by the widespread availability of commercial multiprocessor systems and advances in computer networking, the parallel and distributed simulation field emerged and flourished in the late 1970s and 1980s. The field has evolved since that time to address critical issues such as synchronization and interoperability, and remains an active area of research to this day. Many impressive successes have been reported to date. Today, new platforms ranging from massively parallel, heterogeneous supercomputers and cloud computing environments as well as broader technology trends such as big data and the Internet of Things present new challenges and opportunities. This presentation will review work in the parallel and distributed simulation field from seminal research in the 1970s and 80s to important successes that illustrate the potential offered by this technology. Key impediments that have prevented the technology from achieving more widespread adoption by the general modeling and simulation community are discussed as well as important challenges that remain in exploiting new and emerging computing platforms and technology trends.

Estimating communication cost involved in executing a program on distributed memory machines is important for evaluating the overheads due to repartitioning. The authors present a scheme which will work with reasonable efficiency for arrays with at most 3 dimensions. The hyperplane partitioning technique given by Prakash and Srikant (1997) is extended to complete programs by estimating the communication cost by the scheme presented in the work.
