In this paper a non-traditional computer technology for data representation and processing is presented. It is developed on the basis of classic number theory and some results of fundamental research of Russian academicians Chebyshev and Vinogradov. A peculiarity of the algebraic constructions discussed is determined by using special polynomial conversions and mixed number systems. Some moments concerning this specific had been described previously. Special methods of representing the polynomials allow to obtain the product of two complex numbers in parallel mode using only two real multiplications instead of four as well as to obtain the product of two polynomials of a degree 'n' using n multiplications instead of n. This technology is based on applying both a polynomial ring mapping (PRM) and an extended Galois Fields techniques which allows large dynamic range computations to be performed using massively parallel small finite ring computations. Such computations can offer distinct advantages over computations using usual binary number system.

Recent advances in high-speed networks, rapid improvements in microprocessor design, and availability of highly performing clustering software implementations enables cost-effective high-performance parallel computing on clustered low cost workstations and PCs. Such clusters are very attractive because they rely on availability of the shelf hardware and software technologies. To simplify programming in network environments and to realise component-based software architectures, many models have emerged as possible standards, namely, RPC: Remote Procedure Call, DCE: distributed computing Environment, DCOM: distributed Component Object Model, CORBA: Common Object Request Broker Architecture, PVM: parallel Virtual Machine and MPI: Message Passing Interface. The MPI approach is considered one of the most mature methods currently used in parallel programming. MPI implementations an emerging cluster interconnects are an important requirement for useful parallel processing on cost-effective computer clusters. This paper offers art overview of different parallel computing environments and models. Functionality and performance of MPI running on homogeneous and heterogeneous workstation clusters are compared. The project goals, laboratory environment, performance measurements, future work, and a conclusion are presented.

In HPF programming environment, program behavior needs to be reported for the development of well-tuned application programs. Performance predictor has been regarded as a proper approach for such requirement. In this paper, we propose a performance predictor which includes profiler, static performance predictor and dynamic performance predictor. Profiler generates execution count of each statement by profiling run of the program. While the static performance predictor generates general performance data, dynamic performance predictor reports some advanced performance data such as computation/communication overlapping and performance degradation by cache mis hit. Program slicing technique is applied to profiler and skeleton program is extracted from source program in dynamic performance predictor to speed up prediction time.

Clusters of networked commercial, off the shelf (COTS) workstations are presently used for computation intensive tasks that were typically assigned to parallel computers in the past. However, it is hardly possible to predict the timing behavior of such systems or to give guarantees about execution times. We show how our SONiC (Shared Objects Net-interconnected Computer) system can control timing and partitioning of a workstation as a step towards a distributed real time system built from COTS components. SONiC provides a class based programming interface for creation of replicated shared objects of arbitrary, user defined sizes. Weak consistency protocols are employed to improve system performance. Our scheduling service ensures the requested interactive behavior of a workstation while simultaneously giving a specified number of CPU cycles to parallel tasks. Using offline scheduling methods we are able to implement real time guaranteed services on COTS workstations.

In order to show the feasibility of a fine-grain dataflow computation scheme, we are implementing a fine-grain dataflow language on off-the-shelf computers, using a fine-grain multithread approach. Fine-grain parallel data-structures such as I-structures provide high level abstraction to easily write programs with potentially high parallelism. The results of preliminary experiments on a distributed memory parallel machine indicate that the performance inefficiency related to fine-grain parallel data-structures in the naive implementation is mainly caused by the calculation of the local address for distributed data, and the frequent fine-grain data access using message passing. In order to reduce the addressing overhead, we introduce a two-level table addressing technique. We employ a caching mechanism and a grouping mechanism for the fine-grain data access. The preliminary performance evaluation results indicate that these techniques are effective to improve the performance.

The objective of this paper is to present a feasible and efficient methodology that improves client mobility management under ubiquitous information service network. We base our system on the Open Integrated Service Network Architecture and propose a hybrid infrastructure with facilities of both a centralized Network Management Center (NMC) and a distributed Home Base Node (HEN). We also have criteria for choosing a HEN with minimum cost by computing the expected registration cost and location tracking cost according to users characteristics and called frequencies. Running a simulation, results show that our methodology is able to save up to 40% of the cost comparing to that of IS-41 when the value of Call-Mobility Ratio (CMR) is in the range of (1, 100), which means either clients are called with high frequencies or are moving with low mobilities. As the value of CMR goes down to the range of (0.01, 1), which means either clients are called with low-frequencies or are moving with high mobilities we may save up to 50% cost.

Efficient task migration is an important feature in parallel and distributed programs, in particular to support checkpointing and recovery for fault tolerance. It is also very useful in distributed environments like networks of workstations where external loads are often unpredictable and dynamic in nature. We propose simple language extensions (ELMO) to existing sequential programming languages like C, Fortran or C++, that provide an object based task parallel execution model. Tasks may be dynamically created, are location transparent, and may be migrated or check pointed transparently by the system. ELMO's language features, together with the requisite compiler support is presented.

Summary form only given, as follows. Today, both parallel and distributing computing have became ubiquitous in the forms of clouds and cyber physical systems. We have witnessed the fast developing technology fundamentally changing the balances and paradigms between cost of computing, communication and programming: At the hardware level, the essential aspect of quickly changing landscape is the difference in growth of network bandwidth, processor speed and memory access times. High speed networks are changing balance on the networking side, because port throughput is more limited by the processor speed than by the network bandwidth, as it was in the past. At the same time, the latency of the networks is fundamentally limited by the speed of light and the distance that the transferred data need to travel. On the other hand, the speed of a processor is growing faster than the access time to the memory (where the technological advances are used to increase the memory chip capacity rather than its speed). The resulting use of buffering to mask the speed differences has led to the multi-memory hierarchy in which registers, primary cache, secondary cache and main memory are typical layers with progressively lower speed but larger capacity. This panel will discuss the exciting and promising future of parallel and distributed computing. A record of the panel discussion was not made available for publication as part of the conference proceedings.
