Application output recording (AOR) is the task to record the output of an application so that the reproduction of the recording is sufficiently similar to the original output performance. The paper proposes a taxonomy to structure the task and describes a generic architecture covering the complete range of possible complexities in a recorder. The usage of AOR is described in the context of the European Union funded ACTS-project DIANE (Design, Implementation and Operation of a distributed Annotation Environment) which implements a generic distributed multimedia annotation environment running on broadband systems.

We exploited the recent advances in Internet connectivity and Web technologies for building Web-based parallel programming environments (WPPEs) that facilitate the development and execution of parallel programs on remote high-performance computers. A Web browser running on the user's machine provides a user-friendly interface to server-site user accounts and allows the use of parallel computing platforms and software in a convenient manner. The user may create, edit, and execute files through this Web browser interface. This new Web-based client-server architecture has the potential of being used as a future front-end to high-performance computer systems. We discuss the design and implementation of several prototype WPPEs that are currently in use at the Northeast parallel Architectures Center and the Cornell Theory Center. These initial prototypes support high-level parallel programming with Fortran 90 and High Performance Fortran (HPF), as well as explicit low-level programming with Message Passing Interface (MPI). We detail the lessons learned during the development process and outline the tradeoffs of various design choices in the realization of the design. We especially concentrate on providing server-site user accounts, mechanisms to access those accounts through the Web, and the Web-related system security issues.

We present a simple and efficient algorithm for the nearest smallers problem (NSP) (Berkman et al., 1988) on a distributed shared memory (DSM) system with applications to problems from diverse areas. We adopt the block distributed memory (BDM) model of computation as described in (Jaja and Ryn, 1996). To the best of our knowledge this is the first known algorithm for the NSP on DSM systems. Since the NSP is fundamental in many problems, a solution for it on DSM systems implies DSM-based solutions for a variety of problems in diverse areas, as discussed in this paper. parallel algorithms known so far for the NSP are based on shared memory systems and are therefore less scalable than our algorithm.

There are two basic components to an effective computer architecture: the user representation and the base technology. The architecture is a compromise between the two. Current user representations, at least in the scientific arena, have been developed over a period of time before the introduction of large scale computing. Indeed, the form of large scale computers has been largely determined by existing functional mathematical representations. If we wish to make significant advances in the effectiveness of our base technology-our computer hardware-we must reconsider the user representation. An alternative proposal is to solve problems by particle simulation rather than the traditional continuous model using global memory. Particle simulation models can be solved by cellular computers which closely match the 3 dimensional distributed computing models with structured local interconnection available in optical technology.

The introduction of SRAM-based field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) has opened-up a new dimension to parallel computing architectures. This paper describes an alternative approach to parallel computing-reconfigurable or virtual parallel processing (VPP). Rather than mapping an application onto a given parallel machine, the VPP approach synthesizes the appropriate type and number of processing elements, as well as the interconnection topology, that is optimal for the application. For each application, configuration data is downloaded to the machine that personalizes the hardware for the task at hand. The paper provides a brief description of the authors reconfigurable computer, Archimedes. The benefits of the VPP approach are highlighted by an example application-the 2-D FFT. A novel parallel implementation of a polynomial transform based 2-D transform is described and compared to results for distributed memory parallel machines that have been reported in the literature. The comparison highlights the computational advantage provided by reconfigurable computing.

advances in wireless technology and affordable info-appliances are making mobile computing a reality. However, programmers do have a real hard task while developing mobile distributed applications in which sharing is needed. Such difficulty arises, mainly because programmers are forced to deal with system level issues such as consistency, durability, availability, etc. We designed, implemented and evaluated an object-based platform called M-OBIWAN that releases the programmer from the above mentioned system-level issues. It supports mobile transactions and replication in an integrated way. In contrast with other approaches, M-OBIWAN provides an automatic replication mechanism allowing the creation of dynamic clusters of objects which are accessed within transactions. In addition, the transactional model is adapted to mobile environments. A prototype implementation has been developed. Its performance has been measured with PDAs and desktop machines, linked via Bluetooth.
