Two important aspects have to be addressed when automatically parallelizing loop nests for massively parallel distributed memory computers, namely maximizing parallelism and minimizing communication overhead due to nonlocal data accesses. This paper studies the problem of finding a computation mapping and data distributions that minimize the number of remote data accesses for a given degree of parallelism. This problem is called the constant-degree parallelism alignment problem and is shown to be NP-hard. The algorithm presented uses a linear algebra framework and assumes affine data access functions. It proceeds by enumerating all interesting bases of the set of vectors representing the alignments between computation and data accesses that should be satisfied. It is shown in a comparison with related work how the approach presented allows one to express previous results as special cases. The algorithm is applied to benchmark programs and is shown to be superior to more basic mappings.

This article presents an environment which supplies UNIX network and file-server services for a standalone single program multiple data (SPMD) programming environment running on a parallel machine. Networking services are accessed via a BSD socket-like interface on each node of the parallel machine, which provides access to a full UDP/IP protocol implementation residing on a custom-designed I/O node. An experimental SPMD NFS client system was developed which supports the standard UNIX file-system interface, implementing a fully dynamic NFS remote mount mechanism and an innovative caching scheme on each node. As a practical demonstration of the usability of this environment, a "real-world" file indexing application was successfully ported and parallelised.

advances in networking and storage technologies have made it possible to-build multimedia on-demand servers that provide service similar to those of neighborhood videotape rental stores. In this work, we propose a specialized high-performance programmable multiprocessor. Architecture which allows continuous playback of media-streams to large number of clients, a critical factor in multimedia servers. This architecture supports dynamic phase shifts in media distribution which is particularly useful in a distributed environment. We introduce algorithms for maximum concurrency extraction and to avoid task migration in the presence of dynamically changing demand. We show that our solution performs an order of magnitude better than other known solutions.< >

Simulated annealing based standard cell placement for VLSI designs has long been acknowledged as a compute-intensive process. All previous work in parallel simulated annealing based placement has minimized area, but with deep submicron design, minimizing wirelength delay is also needed. The algorithm discussed in this paper is the first parallel algorithm for timing driven placement. We have used a very accurate Elmore delay model which is more complete intensive and hence the need for parallel placement is more apparent. parallel placement is also needed for very large circuits that may not fit in the memory of a single processor. Therefore, our algorithm is circuit partitioned and can handle arbitrary large circuits on distributed memory multiprocessors. The algorithm, called mpi PLACE, has been tested on several large benchmarks on a variety of parallel architectures.

In order to generate local addresses for an array section A(l:h:s) with block-cyclic distribution, an efficient compiling method is required. In this paper, two local address generation methods for the block-cyclic distribution are presented. One is a simple local address generation method that is modified from the virtual-block scheme. The other is a linear-time /spl Delta/M table construction method. The array elements of A(l:h:s) to be accessed at run-time build up a family of lines. By using the equation of the lines, a /spl Delta/M table can be generated in O(k) time. Experimental results show that a simple local address generation method has poor performance but a linear-time /spl Delta/M table generation method is faster than other algorithms in /spl Delta/M table generation time and access time for 10,000 array elements.

Some previous works have represented novel techniques that exploit cyclostationarity for channel identification in data communication systems using only second order statistics. In particular, the feasibility of blind identification based on the forward shift structure of the correlation matrices of the source has been shown. In this paper we propose an alternative high performance algorithm based on the above property but with an improved choice of the autocorrelation of the equalization matrices to be considered. The new representation of the equalization problem provides a cost function formulated as a large generalized eigenvalue problem, which can be efficiently solved by the Jacobi-Davidson method. We mainly focus on parallel aspects of the Jacobi-Davidson method on massively distributed memory computers. The performance of this method on this kind of architecture is always limited because of the global communication required for the inner products due to the modified Gram-Schmidt (MGS) process. In this paper, we propose using Given rotations which require only local communications avoiding the global communication of inner products since this represents the bottleneck of the parallel performance on distributed memory computers. The corresponding data distribution and communication scheme are presented as well. Several simulation experiments over different data transmission constellations carried out on Parsytec GC/PowerPlus are presented as well.

Although quite a few large scale applications have been ported to multiprocessors in recent years, no framework has yet been set up for the process of designing parallel and distributed applications from sequential programs that takes into account the specific needs of large scale scientific applications where programs have complex, irregular control flow and data structures. The paper proposes such a framework and reports on its application in the portable parallelization of the industrial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package TfC (TASCflow for CAD) within the scope of an interdisciplinary research project.

Metacomputing is an emergent paradigm that makes it possible to distribute applications over a heterogeneous set of computing systems to exploit all available resources. The paper presents the HPO environment for object oriented metacomputing. The HPO programming model is based on the object oriented paradigm and defines architecture independent and portable applications. The HPO support makes it possible to distribute applications over a network of heterogeneous architectures. The paper describes this approach via several examples and evaluates its achieved performances.

advances in storage and high-speed broadband communication network technologies are making it feasible to design and implement distributed scalable video-on-demand server networks. In this paper a hierarchical structure for a server network is proposed to support a metropolitan TV-Anytime service. A key issue, how to map the media assets onto such a hierarchical server network, is addressed in this paper. The definition and heuristic methods for the solution of this new combinatorial optimization problem are presented. The mapping problem studied here addresses the management of media assets taking the storage capacity, communication bandwidth limitation and access pattern into account. The methods presented in this paper are based on parallel simulated annealing and are verified by the use of a set of benchmark instances. The results show that the methods provide a near to optimal performance in terms of the Quality of Service (QoS).
