This paper presents a technique to map automatically a complete digital signal processing (DSP) application onto a parallel machine with distributed memory. Unlike other applications where coarse or medium grain scheduling techniques can be used, DSP applications integrate several thousand of tasks and hence necessitate fine grain considerations. Moreover finding an effective mapping imperatively require to take into account both architectural resources constraints and real time constraints. The main contribution of this paper is to show how it is possible to handle and to solve data partitioning, and fine-grain scheduling under the above operational constraints using concurrent constraints logic programming languages (CCLP). Our concurrent resolution technique undertaking linear and nonlinear constraints takes advantage of the special features of signal processing applications and provides a solution equivalent to a manual solution for the representative panoramic analysis (PA) application.

Coordination models, languages and systems have been developed since the beginning of the eighties. Their initial focus was on process coordination in parallel systems. The work on Linda initially aimed at providing a way to express parallelism in computations that is independent of the underlying machine architecture (Carriero and Gelernter, 1989). parallel computations were expressed as single programs, optimized by a precompiler and executed in a single tuplespace, on which a single ensemble of processes operated. An evolution from computations in parallel systems to applications in open systems has taken place in computer systems. While coordination languages have a certain role in parallel computing, they lack real life applications in open systems, and are not recognized as platforms for such. We present a framework for coordination in open systems. It is based on the support of coordination within groups of people by coordinative applications. These applications are implemented on top on coordination technology which provides a structuring of the coordination media and rules on coordination. The agreement on the use of specific coordinative applications and coordination technology is reached by meta coordination. We want to level the potential of coordination technology by embedding it into a framework that includes applications and their deployment.

PvmJobs is a general bag-of-jobs library for PVM that works with any user created job structure in a master/slave paradigm. A master can spawn slave processes, schedule and dispatch jobs to slaves, coordinate and synchronize the activities. A slave process obtains a job from the master, performs a set of prescribed tasks, returns results to the master, and obtains the next job. Slaves are organized into separate disjoint groups, called bags. Each bag has one master, its own set of slaves, and jobs to perform. A master may use one or more bags simultaneously, and a slave can be a master as well. PvmJobs provides a simple FIFO job scheduling mechanism which can be easily replaced by application-defined priority-driven scheduling. The package is written in C and is easy to use by anyone who knows PVM. PvmJobs is well documented and is used for applications with a master/slave message-passing paradigm. The package has been used in various typical parallel computations and applied in the parallel implementation of the Grobner bases algorithm and the characteristic sets method. The design and implementation of PvmJobs is presented. The library routines and their usage are described. Examples are given. General requirements of the library from applications are carefully explained.

The paper proposes optimal checkpoint placement strategies using failure propagation analysis in a distributed rollback recovery system. The authors' previously proposed idea of failure propagation analysis (FPA) based checkpoint placement strategy is enhanced by incorporating link failures, task grouping/allocation, and loop stabilization aspects. Owing to the empirical observation that a large number of faults occur around message communication instructions, the checkpoint placement strategy places more checkpoints around message send/receive regions of the code. Allocation of tasks (or, threads) onto different processors can lead to varied communication patterns, which in turn can affect the FPA process and the checkpoint placement strategies. Thus, another key contribution of our research is to show the cyclic relationship between checkpointing and task allocation, as well as recursion in parallel or distributed programs. The proposed ideas and FPA approaches are illustrated using a typical parallel algorithm-the fast Fourier transform (FFT).

This paper presents a parallel information retrieval (IR) system which provides information for users with precision and speed. For precision, the IR system adopts a full-text search method. To supply a fast information service, parallel processing techniques are used, so multiple queries are processed concurrently and each of these queries is also handled in parallel using multiple processors. For the efficient utilization of multiple processors, we developed a processor allocation method which dynamically assigns various-size processor clusters for incoming queries based on the current workload of the system. The parallel IR model is implemented on a multi-transputer system composed of 16 processors. According to the experiments, a linear speed-up of up to 11.3-fold is obtained, and network and hard disk overheads are negligible in comparison with the response time.

LOGFLOW is a distributed Prolog implementation running on transputer networks, developed at KFKI-MSZKI. To improve the capabilities and the power of LOGFLOW the system is ported onto workstation-clusters under the name WS-LOGFLOW. The new platform requires modification in the architecture of the system, in token transportation and in work distribution. This paper presents the modified architecture of WS-LOGFLOW, the new token distribution scheme, some detail of the porting processes, intra-node shared-memory communication and inter-node PVM-based message-passing communication.

The mpC (message-passing C) language was developed to write efficient and portable programs for wide range of distributed memory machines. It supports both task and data parallelism, allows both static and dynamic process and communication structures, enables optimizations aimed at both communication and computation, and supports modular parallel programming and the development of a library of parallel programs. The language is an ANSI C superset based on the notion of a network comprising processor nodes of different types and performances, connected with links of different bandwidths. The user can describe a network topology, create and discard networks, and distribute data and computations over networks. The mpC programming environment uses the topological information at run-time to ensure the efficient execution of the application. This paper describes the implementation of network management in the mpC programming environment.

A 3D analysis code for mixed convection flow through the printed circuit board (PCB) channel on which heat-generating chip modules are mounted has been developed. For uniformly distributed modules, a small domain containing a single module is considered with periodic and symmetric boundary conditions. Calculations have been made for various Grashof numbers to examine the effects of natural convection for both adiabatic and conducting wall conditions. The program is designed to run on the KAICUBE/Hanbit-1 parallel computer, and its performance on different machines is compared in this paper.

The DSM system we propose in this paper is implemented completely at the operating system level as a component of RHODOS' Memory (Space) Manager. In addition, it is integrated with RHODOS' existing invalidation-based DSM allowing the programmers to choose the consistency protocol best suited to their application. These factors enable RHODOS DSM to provide the user with a transparent, efficient and scalable shared memory programming environment. In this paper, we describe the logical design, implementation and performance study of an update based DSM which strictly adheres to the above criteria. These criteria allow the user to program using a familiar model while taking advantage of the greater scalability of COWs.

The existing SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) parallel bus has been widely used in supporting multimedia applications. However, it may not fully utilize the aggregate throughput from disks in supporting continuous media because of its unfair bus accesses. The emerging serial interface, Serial Storage Architecture (SSA), provides high data bandwidth, fair accesses and fault tolerance. The fairness algorithm in SSA ensures that a fraction of the data bandwidth is allocated to each disk. In this paper, we study the performance of SSA and SCSI in supporting continuous media.
