A critical issue for complex component-based systems design is the modeling and analysis of architecture. Architectural specifications of software systems show them as a collection of interrelated components, and constitute what has been called the software architecture level of software design. It is at this level where the description and verification of structural properties of the system are naturally addressed. Besides, the use of explicit descriptions of the architecture of software systems enhances system comprehension and promotes software reuse. We have developed a tool-the Web-Based Software Architecture Prototyping System (SAPS)-in a distributed environment to meet the requirements of integrating software components into heterogeneous networks. Our system architecture design environment includes a Web-based Software Architecture Editor, the java Code Generator (JCG), a Reusable Assets Repository (RAR), and a Platform Distribution Controller (PDC). By using the wrapper/glue technique, different simulation tools in a heterogeneous environment share the input/output data files for prototypes. The architecture is generalized for the communication among software components necessary for data interchange. Our system not only provides a useful array of tools for distributed real-time system prototyping, but also is a demonstration of the effective use of a distributed system in a heterogeneous environment.

Much work is being conducted in the area of business process modeling using workflow technology. HiWorD is a hierarchical workflow modeling prototype with simulation capability. It models business processes using Petri nets in a hierarchical manner and implements recovery transitions as a technique to recover from exceptions. The workflow hierarchy is created by refining places and transitions using predefined patterns. By using these patterns, it is proven that the resulting workflow will be sound.

A visually lossless colour image (VLCI) coder is proposed based on the embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT) [D. Taubman, July 2000] coding structure. The VLCI coder is adapted with the contrast gain control [A. B. Watson and J. A. Solomon, 1997] model for the identification and removal of visually redundant information in the spectral domain prior to encoding. Since no additional side information are required and no modifications are involved at the decoding end, this coder is fully compliant with the EBCOT bitstream. Thus, it can be easily adapted to any JPEG2000 standard coder. The proposed coder has been designed to perform visually lossless compression independent of viewing distances. It currently operates in the Y/sub D/C/sub b/C/sub r/ composite colour domain. simulation results of the VLCI coder has shown marked improvements over the LOCO [M. Weinberger et al., 1996] and the near-lossless LOCO (d2) coder in terms of compression ratio.

With the high-speed development of computer systems having performance values of calculation machines, which needed one or more rooms of place and a special air conditioning a few years ago, the usage of methods dealing with a high amount of data at one side, and the need of doing a enormous number of calculation work at the other side became used snore and snore frequently. Tunnelling is one major field, where this advance is very important. That field of science is regarded as one of the more difficult engineering tasks. This is due to the fact that tunnels are excavated in a material whose mechanical and hydraulic properties are highly variable and whose behaviour is difficult to describe to a numerical simulation model. Numerical simulation of tunnel advance cart serve as a powerful tool in the design and decision making on site. But this has to be done almost in real-time, that means that the calculation and the necessary post-processing must be finished, before the engineer on site is forced to make his decisions. This circumstance places a very specific challenge to the used hard and software. In the beginning of 1997 the Austrian science Fund established a Joint Research Initiative (JRI) Numerical simulation in Tunnelling (SITU) [1, 2] with a budget of about 3 Million 6 for 5,years. Currently about 24 professionals from 3 universities are working on the this research initiative. The aim of the JRI is to develop a framework for the application of computer based numerical simulation tools. These tools can then be used for the estimation of the required tunnel support and the required construction measures at the planning stage and during construction with the view of improving the economy and safety of tunnels. A very important task in this field is the visualisation of the available usually very, large amount of data. An excellent quality, technical and physical correctness, combined with real-time and user friendliness in this area is absolutely necessary to

In the introductory programming course at UMass Boston we teach java™ by immersion. Instead of starting with the traditional "Hello, world", students read, modify and write about a 200 line bank ATM simulation program consisting of two cooperating classes. By the end of the semester they are working with a 3,500-line application that models a command line shell and a hierarchical file system. Our students learn programming the same way one best learns a spoken language: by immersion. We focus immediately on questions of interfaces, architecture and design. We spend little time on syntactic details, which students simply absorb as they need them. So in this first course, students get taste of and an appreciation for what real programming is all about.

The traditional, lecturer-driven classroom is giving way to a new more active environment, where students have access to a variety of multimedia course materials. We created several java applets for the electrical engineering course Properties of Materials. These applets help describe concepts related to electron motion in metals and semiconductors. They address ideas which are often difficult for students to visualize and yet important for students to intuitively understand. simulation applets are "hands-on" and interactive while tutorial applets are "hands-off" and presented in slide show format. The applets can be viewed at http://***. We deployed these applets in a class of roughly 140 students. We recorded the students' learning preferences, background characteristics, and opinions about the applets. We then characterized population and usage trends of the students.

Virtual realistic highway networks consist of many road segments that are subject to link constraints between them. These constraints ensure the road segments to link together seamlessly and smoothly. This leads to the geometric data of the highway networks reliable for driving simulation. A difficult task in computer generation of such realistic 3D highway networks is linking the road segments by trial and error. In this paper we present a 3D modeler that allows semi-automatic generation of realistic highway scene based upon parameterized modeling technology. Here "semiautomatic generation" means that a user can interactively create or modify any individual road segment and other scene component, and then the modeler automatically links or adjusts the road segments to satisfy the link constraints. We have developed a prototype of the modeler with java3D. The modeler enables a user to quickly generate a highway scene for immersive simulation of driving of automobiles. The semi-automatic generation of highway networks facilitates design creativity and is more reliable and faster than putting together of road segments via trial and error.

Summary form only given. An interactive cell modeling web resource, iCell (http://***/icell/), was developed as a simulation-based teaching and learning tool for electrophysiology. The web site consists of java applets that present models of various cardiac cells and neurons, and simulation data of their bioelectric activities at cellular level. Each java-based model allows the user to go through menu options to change model parameters, run and view simulation results. The site also has a glossary section for the scientific terms. iCell has integrated research and education and, has been used as a teaching and learning tool for five graduate courses at the Joint Biomedical engineering Program of University of Memphis and University of Tennessee. This modeling tool was also used as a collaboration site among our colleagues interested in simulations of cell membrane activities. Scientists from the fields of biosciences, engineering, life sciences and medical sciences in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, England, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Turkey and USA have tested and utilized iCell as a simulation-based teaching, learning and collaboration environment. The platform-independent software, iCell, provides us with an interactive and user-friendly teaching and learning resource, and also a collaboration tool for electrophysiology to be shared over the Internet.
