We investigate the use of XML as an open, cross-platform, and extendable file format for the description of hierarchical simulation models, including their graphical representations, initial model conditions, and model execution algorithms. We present HiMASS-x, an XML-centered suite of software applications that allows for cross-platform, distributed modeling and execution of hierarchical, component-based, and reusable simulation models.

This paper describes the design of HLA distributed architecture to support an interactive, interoperable, and collaborative war-gaming simulation using java technology and IEEE standard 1516-High Level Architecture (HLA). Based on the run-time infrastsructure (RTI) services which are specified in HLA and java application programming interface (API) of the RTI, the proposed distributed virtual environment (DVE) provides a practical foundation to enhance interactivity, portability, and interoperability for distributed simulation. Moreover, we build up a 3D synthetic virtual world for aircraft simulator by means of java 3D API in which java 3D technology could support a simple, portable, and flexible programming model for 3D scene construction. From the system implementation and experimental results, we show that the proposed HLA distributed architecture is a practical and scalable design that is applicable for a wide variety of moderate DVEs.

An education tool has been developed to explain internal behavior and structure of computer graphically. It is written in java Language and designed for students to understand how computer works in the classroom lecture of information science. This paper describes some characteristics of our education tool and improvement of its facilities, especially embedded mail handling module for information exchange between teacher and students.

This paper studies the issues of using mobile agents to achieve load sharing for network services in a wide-area network environment such as the Internet. Traditionally, load sharing algorithms are based on the message-passing paradigm. In this paper, we propose the use of mobile agents as an aid to design fully distributed and dynamic load-sharing mechanisms for wide-area network services, which provide several advantages over the pure message passing-based approach. A framework (called MALS-mobile agent-enabled load sharing) for structuring and designing load sharing in wide-area network services is presented. In particular, we describe the design of a mobile agent-enabled distributed dynamic load sharing scheme within the MALS framework. A simulation environment of the load sharing protocol is being implemented using Aglet™, a java-compliant mobile agent platform from IBM. Preliminary experimental results demonstrated that the proposed framework is effective. © 2002 IEEE.

The human brain is far superior to a modern computer in its ability to do associative recall. Many theorists believe that one of the important functions of primate neocortex is "associative memory". Palm's network (Palm et al., 1997) is one of the most powerful associative memory models available. To study variations of this basic model, we have built a multiprocessor based Palm simulator that executes on our Beowulf cluster and supercomputers at NASA. We have also created a spiking version that adds temporal information to the model and is more biologically plausible. Experimental results are summarized, and the problems solved are also discussed.

The PROUD module placement algorithm mainly uses a hierarchical decomposition technique and the solution of sparse linear systems based on a resistive network analogy. It has been shown that the PROUD algorithm can achieve a comparable design of the placement problems for very large circuits with the best placement algorithm based on simulated annealing, but with several order of magnitude faster. The modified PROUD, namely MPROUD algorithm by perturbing the coefficient matrices performs much faster that the original PROUD algorithm. Due to the instability and unguaranteed convergence of MPROUD algorithm, we have proposed a new convergent and numerically stable PROUD, namely Improved PROUD algorithm, denoted as IPROUD with attractive computational costs to solve the module placement problems by making use of the SYMMLQ and MINRES methods based on Lanczos process (Yang, 1997). We subsequently propose parallel versions of the improved PROUD algorithms. The parallel algorithm is derived such that all inner products and matrix-vector multiplications of a single iteration step are independent. Therefore, the cost of global communication which represents the bottleneck of the parallel performance on parallel distributed memory computers can be significantly reduced, therefore, to obtain another order of magnitude improvement in the runtime without loss of the quality of the layout.

Recent research efforts in the development of objective quality and impairment measures for quality assessment of digital video and television have helped to improve and refine models for the human visual system. In particular, recent publications by S. Winkler (see "Vision Models and Quality Metrics for Images Processing Applications", PhD thesis, EPFL, Lausanne, 2000), J. Lubin and D. Fibush, (see T1A1.5 Working Group Document #97-612, ANSI T1 Standards Committee, 1997) and Z. Yu et al. (see Proc. IEEE, Jan. 2002) have incorporated comprehensive vision models as part of their picture quality and impairment metric design. Applications of these vision-model-based perceptual quality or impairment metrics to image/video compression are seen as the next step in delivering perceptual image or video coding systems which cater for improvement in perceived picture quality. This paper subscribes to an approach to perceptual image coder design whereby a vision-model-based perceptual distortion metric is introduced into a conventional coder, e.g. JPEG2000 compliant coder, in place of the mean-square-error measure for rate-distortion optimization. simulation results show that the new perceptual image coder provides better performance over the JPEG2000 coder with or without the visual masking option (see Taubman, D., IEEE Trans. Image Proc., vol.7, p.1158-70, 2000).

The use of multimedia tools over the World Wide Web is an extremely desirable instructional method. Unintentionally this has created a maze of online tutorials and demonstrations with huge amounts of information in disarray. In addition, Cognitive theories, like Active Learning and Experiential Learning, applicable to the engineering domain, sermonize modeling, problem resolution and problem visualization as the key elements in instruction. In this paper, we present some of our work on building user configurable java Applets for education in photonics (lasers and optics). These include design Applets for laser principles that illustrate optical ray tracing systems, population inversion, and 3-D visualization of optical polarization. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of user-controlled context based educational resources. A design-based learning experience using java Applets and the multiple facets of the design and development of such a software system is described. Specifically, an initial object-oriented framework that emphasizes key elements of design like reusability, flexibility, modularity and extensibility is provided. This framework is developed for the design of educational java Applets that provide user configurable simulation environments. The six key elements of the framework are: Components, Strategy objects, Singleton objects, Visitor objects, Toolkits and Containers. Moreover, methods to initialize Applets using design windows and HTML tags are presented. This framework provides basic guidelines for developing user-configurable java simulation environments for use in any science or engineering field.
