A variable structure controller design for the tip position control of a flexible one-link manipulator was presented by Thomas et al. (1997). The control torque obtained using this design methodology was subjected to high frequency chattering. This makes it impossible to implement the controller in practice. The absence of a sign(S) function in the control law makes it impossible to implement the boundary layer technique of chatter reduction where the sign(S) function is replaced by a saturation type function to yield a continuous control signal approximation that confines the system trajectory to a small band neighboring the switching surface. This paper presents a new switching law which not only alleviates chattering in the control signal but also ensures ideal sliding mode motion. simulation results are presented to verify the claims attributed to the proposed method.

Our Virtual Automation Lab is a Web based interactive learning environment for both Computer science and Automation engineering concepts within a virtual university setting. We describe three Lab exercises in which students learn how to operate CAN fieldbus devices without any physical proximity to the devices themselves. One of the exercises is a pure simulation realized with a java applet. In the other exercises, java applets provide a remote interface to a server which acts as a bridge between the Internet and the CAN fieldbus. No proprietary software has to be installed and no browser plug-ins are needed to access the devices via the internet. While our exercises pave the ground for teaching Lab based courses over the Internet, or enriching physical Labs with virtual devices that are located elsewhere, our java based software solutions may also form the basis for industrial applications like remote control, monitoring, maintenance, or data acquisition.

The primary objective of this research work is the methodology about the development of a fluid simulation package integrated with the Internet, which will allow the user to perform fluid simulation on the World Wide Web (WWW). The web-based software package is developed using tools like java, ActiveX and HTML and is accessible over the Internet from anywhere in the work. This work is a part of a project on framework of web-based CAE system, which includes the creation of software packages for other CAE issues such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Geometry Design (CAGD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). The framework of web-based CAE system is a set of CAE packages that can be accessed from all over the world. The simulation package is stored on a powerful server located at the Hong Kong University of science and Technology, and the input/output (text, graphics, and animation) can be viewed and accessed by any computer supporting a web browser. In this paper, the traditional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) problem - Transient Natural Convection in a Cavity is used as the example to show how to build a fluid simulation package integrated with the Internet. At first, we will introduce the prospect of such a research work;then, the transient natural convection problem in a cavity is analyzed based on the stream-function and vorticity-function;at last, two solution of web-based fluid simulation will be compared using the example of transient natural convection in a cavity. Experiments on Transient Natural Convection in a Cavity have shown the feasibility for a networked fluid simulation service via the Internet. © 2000 by ASME.

Techniques for wrapping an MPI-based molecular dynamics (MD) simulation code as java/CORBA components, for use within a distributed component based problem solving environment (CB-PSE), is presented. The legacy code for simulating a Lennard-Jones fluid is first wrapped as a single CORBA object, followed by division of the code into computational sub-units, where each sub-unit is wrapped as a CORBA object containing MPI calls, and run on a cluster of workstations-enabling different MPI implementations to inter-operate. Each CORBA object is a component, with its interface and constrains defined in XML, which enables a user to search for components suitable to a particular application, enables a component to be configured when instantiated, enables each component to register with an event listener and facilitates the sharing of components between repositories. The application architecture and task graph are also described in XML. Using a java implementation, users can submit simulation tasks through a Web based interface, without needing to know implementation details of the legacy code, or the exact interaction between sub-units within the code. We provide performance comparisons of wrapping the entire MD code as a single object, verses wrapping sub-units within it. © 2000 IEEE.

The free-fall condition proposed by Nadaoka et al.(1997a) as a general wave breaking criterion is examined for its applicability to multi-directional breaking waves. The depth-integrated breaking wave model proposed by Nadaoka and Ono (1998) is applied to directional breaking wave simulation in which the free-fall condition is employed as a wave-breaking criterion. Comparison of the numerical results for simple directional breaking waves with the laboratory data obtained by experiments conducted in a multi-directional wave basin show good agreements in the breaking points, validating the free-fall condition as a useful breaking criterion for directional waves.

Inter-organizational collaborative product development relies heavily on Internet-based technology. As heterogeneous computer environments are typically used in such cases, problems related with data sharing and work coordination at the global level are basic obstacles for widespread implementation of the concept of virtual engineering teams in global product development. In this paper, a software infrastructure is proposed to solve the addressed problems. An event-driven software component framework called the STEP Object Management Framework (SOMF) enables the sharing of common STEP-based product model data, manages collaborative and distributed workflows and provides interfaces to OMG compliant Product Data Management (PDM) systems and workflow management systems. The component framework is based on open standards (CORBA, STEP, java) and permits a flexible configuration to meet the specific requirements of organizations involved in joint product development projects. © 2000 IEEE

A SEF (software exchange format), such as GXL (Holt et al., 2000), TA (Holt, 1997) or RSF (Wong, 1996), is used to exchange data between tools that analyze software. Researchers at Bell Canada have specified the Datrix SEF in TA (and soon to be, GXL) for C, C++ and java. It is designed so that a parser for the language, C, C++ or java, can read a source program and emit the program's abstract syntax tree (AST) in the Datrix format. This note explains how an entity/relation (E/R) schema (Chen, 1976) was extracted for Datrix, and gives this schema as an E/R diagram.

java chips have been widely accepted in real-time embedded systems. Those embedded applications usually impose resource and real-time constraints on the design of the CPU. In this paper, we seek a hardware-assisted scheme to support runtime memory management and thus to provide a real-time capability for embedded java devices. We propose a dynamic garbage collection mechanism to guarantee a predictable memory allocation time. The key points are that a co-processor identifies the data transition events in java and that memory management is accomplished by a circular heap. We show the design and architecture of the dynamic memory management in detail. Our simulation results illustrate that the response time of memory allocation is very predictable compared to other approaches.
