Lightweight formal modeling and automatic analysis were used to explore the design of the intentional naming system (INS), a new scheme for resource discovery in a dynamic networked environment. We constructed a model of INS in Alloy a lightweight relational notation, and analyzed it with the Alloy Constraint Analyzer, a fully automatic simulation and checking tool. In doing so, we exposed several serious flaws in both the algorithm of INS and the underlying naming semantics. We were able to characterize the conditions under which the existing INS scheme works correctly, and evaluate proposed fixes.

We present the rationale, implementation and performance features of a virtual lab environment for an electronic circuits course. The primary purpose of the tool is to provide an environment that mimics some of the failure modes of a real lab, which aids the student in learning debugging techniques. The tool is implemented as a java application.

The problem of adaptive output feedback control aimed at stabilization of a (periodic or chaotic) goal trajectory is considered. Algorithms of adaptive control based on linearization of a controlled Poincare map and the method of goal inequalities posed first in Fradov and Guzenko (1997) are briefly reviewed. Those algorithms are applied to stabilization of the limit cycle of a brusselator model when the parameters of controlled system are not known exactly and the input values of control algorithm contain the random error of measurement. Some results of computer simulation are also included.

This paper introduces and investigates the use of a java Iconic Visual Environment for simulation (JIVESim). JIVESim is an iconic modelling environment for discrete-event simulation. The paper will give an overview of JIVESim and its architecture, which consists of atomic icons and integrated icons. The advantages of java language that support discrete event simulation will be discussed. The aim of the paper is to address some of the challenges that computer simulation faces. These challenges are complexity, inaccessibility, and high cost. Related aspects of design and implementation are presented and critiqued. (C) 1999 Elsevier science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Increasing popularity of simulation has resulted in a large number of simulation software tools. This paper discusses users' requirements and presents the results of surveys on the use of simulation software conducted in 1992 and 1997. Findings of the survey indicate which types of simulation software are primarily being used, users' opinion about positive and negative software features and possible ways of improving simulation software. This paper outlines an estimation method of structural failure probabilities based on a simulation within a limited sampling region. Samples are restricted outside the beta-sphere and within an effective distance range. The basic random variables are assumed to be independent normal variables and the reliability index beta to be known. Each sample for the limited sampling region is produced by combining a random radius generated from a truncated chi-square distribution with a random directional vector generated from standard normal variates. Numerical examples are presented to show the validity of the proposed method. (C) 1999 Elsevier science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper describes an object-oriented distributed control environment for industrial multirobot applications. A distributed computing environment, where workpieces, robots, and other industrial devices such as a vision sensor are defined as software objects with class inheritance hierarchy, supports human-friendly task-level programming and automated robot program generation with 3D graphic simulation, and performs supervisory and real-time sensor-based coordinated control of multirobot systems. Using object-oriented multitasking control with a preemptive rescheduler, vision-based robot positioning and pick and place operations for exchange of a workpiece are demonstrated to validate the control performance of the computing environment.
