In the summer of 1997, the ITESM initiated a project to reengineer the teaching-learning process at the 27 campuses of the system. The project incorporates the fundamental aspects written in the ITESM mission statement for the year 2005. In particular, to achieve the desired profile for the ITESM students, each course regardless of the discipline, must incorporate attitudes, values and abilities explicitly written on the mission statement. For instance, honesty, self-study, cooperative learning, autoevaluation, and critical thinking are, among others, some of the values and abilities distributed during the course. This distribution is performed adding procedural and attitudinal contents to the standard conceptual contents written in the analytical program for the course. This article presents the redesign of an introductory electronics class that is taken by junior students of the Electric and Mechanic engineering Program at ITESM, Campus Monterrey. The redesign process implies the transformation of a traditional educative process, focused mainly on teaching and centered around the professor, to an educational process focused on learning and centered around the student. The paper describes an instructional model that strengthens the knowledge-acquisition stage, and promotes the development of abilities, attitudes and values.

State-of-the-art advances in sensors, communication, and computing technologies have made military missions involving uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) a reality. UAVs are aircraft without the onboard presence of pilot or aircrew. Much of the UAV research has focused on the necessary electronic, mechanical, communication, and computing infrastructure, while equally important to mission success is the role of the human as a remote, supervisory controller. There is a need for an interactive modeling and simulator environment to support analysis of research issues associated with human interactions and automated control in the UAV domain. This article describes a computational environment for interactive modeling and simulation of uninhabited aerial vehicles. The environment, implemented in java, is useful for emulating relevant characteristics of the human/system interaction for purposes of analysis. This paper outlines the design and evaluation of the architecture for modeling uninhabited aerial vehicles in the context of a prototypical military mission.

Virtual manufacturing information system using java™ and JDBC™

The programming language -- java, from Sun Microsystems, promises to transform the internet into a medium of secure on-line and real-time business transactions, that are independent of operating systems. Also, with the development of java Database Connectivity (JDBC) API, it is possible to create secure, three-tier, virtual database systems. This paper deals with the implementation of a three-tier database system, using java and JDBC, and creation of an innovative, intelligent "interactive ordering system" on the Internet. A simulation study of the five/ten rule

Results of a preliminary simulation study of a process adjustment procedure designed to constrain quadratic economic loss are presented. The five / ten rule was found to behave well when the process mean was out of adjustment by more than four-tenths of a standard deviation, and erratically otherwise. (C) 1998 Elsevier science Ltd. This paper addresses a new unified framework for simulation that includes both physical and decision making processes of manufacturing systems. The developed methodology uses a state-space representation based simulation-modeling formalism along with object oriented software design. The modularity of user's conceptual model in terms of physical and decision making entities with their programmed and non-programmed decisions and the capability of modeling these entities and processes at different hierarchical levels can vastly improves simulation's role as a decision making tool. This paper presents a new methodology for business process simulation modeling and analysis based on role-based concept. A simulator is developed to systematically construct simulation models and conduct simulation easily and efficiently. Dispatching rules for stochastic finite capacity scheduling

In his paper, we investigate how dispatching rules affect the performance of stochastic simulation-based finite capacity scheduling systems and provide guidance for schedulers to determine effective dispatching rules for stochastic simulation-based finite capacity scheduling systems. To investigate the performance of dispatching rules in stochastic simulation-based finite capacity scheduling systems, extensive simulation experiments have been conducted through a two-stage simulation process. The experimental simulation results show that the schedules generated by the stochastic simulations with the dispatching rule, FIFO, outperform the schedules with some other well-known dispatching rules on the criteria of tardiness and proportion of jobs tardy. In addition, the simulation results support the concept that the more randomness the system is subject to, the simpler the scheduling rules should be. (C) 1998 Elsevier science Ltd. This paper describes a learning philosophy for computer science that is based on having students write a simulation of a computer system, then adding features to the initial simulation that are appropriate for learning concepts being presented in a particular course. In the past the author has successfully utilized this method in teaching concepts related to CPU processor scheduling in an operating systems course;however, as the simulation was written in a structured language using platform-dependent code it was not portable to other platforms nor was it possible to adapt the code to examine different concepts without a major rewrite being made necessary. The development and rapid growth of java, a platform-independent object-oriented language, has provided a facility with which to better serve students. The fundamental components of a computer system, such as registers and memory, can be modeled as objects. Each component is written up into a java class containing both data elements and methods for operating upon the data elements. As these classes need only be written once, for subsequent assignments students have only to import the appropriate classes and instantiate the required objects in order to create models of the components tailored to whatever specifications are provided. These components are then used as part of the new simulation. Because of java's design, code can be ported from one platform to another and both graphics and graphical user interfaces can be incorporated into the simulator.

This paper presents the development and implementation of Motorola's Graphical Manufacturing Monitoring System (GraMMS) that provides real-time graphical monitoring of manufacturing data including work-in-process (WIP), equipment, throughput, and dispatch rankings. GraMMS consists of four main applications namely;Dynamic Dispatch, WIP Monitoring System (WMS), Equipment Management System (EMS), and Throughput Monitoring System (TMS). GraMMS (Pierce & Yurtsever) provides Motorola semiconductor wafer fabs with instant data-driven decision support and trend analysis as well as a short-interval scheduler via discrete-event simulation. The Dynamic Dispatch system is a combination of simulation and heuristics based on concepts from the Theory of Constraints. This competitive advantage increases output, decreases cycle time, and improves resource utilization. (C) 1998 Elsevier science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Analytic process of resource: A practical approach for scheduling

In this paper, a new approach, Analytic Process of Resource (APR), is proposed to deal with the complex production scheduling problems. It decomposes a complex process into a series of simple ones, and focuses the problem-solving process on the decision points in them. A multiobjective linear combined priority model is introduced to make decisions in the problem-solving process, and an application of APR to an FMS scheduling problem is presented.
