This paper proposes to solve the nonlinear regulator equations based on a single hidden layer feedforward neural network, leading to an effective approach to approximately solve the nonlinear servomechanism problem. The resulting design method is illustrated by application to the well-known ball and beam system. (C) 1998 Elsevier science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Component-based software can be used to develop highly modular simulation environments supporting high reusability of software components. This paper examines a case study in which JSIM, a java-based simulation environment, is extended using java Beans technology. This allows simulation models to be treated as components that can be dynamically assembled to build more complex models. It also allows simulation inputs and outputs to be dynamically linked to database systems.

The influence of DC power modulation on transient stability for an interconnected AC/DC power system is studied and some regularity conclusions are made in this paper. The engineering feasibility and exiting problems of improving the transient stability by fast DC power modulation is also studied when the AC system is subjected to a large disturbance. Moreover, it is discussed whether DC power modulation absorbs large mount of reactive power, and possibly leads to voltage collapse of the AC system. The simulation results prove that the effectiveness of DC power modulation to improve the transient stability of an interconnected AC/DC power system is subject to the network structure of the system, the parameters and reactive power characteristics in the AC system, the type of the modulators, their parameters and the operation mode in the DC system.

The use of the World Wide Web and java-based mobile code provides new opportunities for distributed simulation. First, the infrastructure provided by the Internet eliminates the need for multiprocessor hardware, making it feasible to distribute simulation models over different hardware platforms through the Internet. Second, "Internet-aware" mobile java code makes the applications fully portable and reusable. These enabling technologies are already exploited for distributed simulation modeling. This paper reports on the preliminary results of an on-going effort to construct a parallel discrete event simulation support system to distribute simulation experiments over the Internet with a view on simulation optimization. A research prototype for ranking and selection problems is described. The overall project goals are discussed.
