With the current improvements in the capabilities of mathematical simulation models, these models can be used for control applications, opening a new methodology for controlling glass furnaces for optimal glass quality. The method is based on three steps. From classical theories a set of basic models can be derived that roughly describes the relationship between furnace design, glass properties, and operation, with settings on the one hand and the glass quality on the other. These relations are simplified, but they form a good basis for designing control strategies. This type of model can be fine-tuned using a detailed mathematical simulation model. Existing nonlinearities, can be built into these simplified models by employing adaptive neuro-fuzzy interference system techniques. The resulting controller is very transparent and robust. For setpoint changes the controller is employed as a feed-forward controller. An example for color change is shown.

Optimizing the number of hidden units in feedforward neural networks is an important issue in learning. Previously, a new criterion for selecting the number of hidden units in feedforward neural networks has been proposed by Xu (1997), based on the so-called Bayesian Ying-Yang (BYY) learning theory. The new criterion can be simply computed during the implementation of backpropagation training. In this paper, the criterion is experimentally studied and compared with the well-known cross validation approach. simulation results show that obtained number of hidden units by the BYY criterion is highly consistent with the minimal generalization error and outperforms the cross validation approach.

A sensorless vector controller for induction motor drives based on the theory of model reference adaptive system (MRAS) has been presented in previous papers, which identifies synchronous speed of motor drives using the error of reactive power as the reference input of adaptation mechanism. Moreover, as shown by the authors in a previous paper (see Proc. European Power Electronics Conf., vol.4, p.480-5, 1997) the MRAS-based synchronous speed identification scheme requires neither rotor time constant nor stator resistance in both adjustable and reference models. However, rotor resistance is still used for the estimation of shaft speed. In this paper, a stator resistance identification scheme based upon MRAS using the error of active power as the reference input of adaptation mechanism and details about the stability of the identification scheme is presented. Moreover, the rotor resistance is adjusted using the variation rate of stator resistance. simulation and experimental results are presented to confirm the theoretical analysis.

simulation modelling is an ideal domain for the application of object-oriented methods, both in the modelling of problem domain entities and in the implementation of simulators. This paper describes a prototype development of an object-oriented, animated, general purpose discrete-event simulation language which builds on the well established entity modelling notations of JSD and harnesses the object-oriented features provided by java to produce a high-level graphically defined simulation language providing customisable animations in a platform-independent way. Simple situations can be modelled quickly and simply, without the need for programming, whilst the provision of a programmatic API, coupled with the ability to extend the pre-defined Entity class with the addition of java methods permits a flexible approach to handling more complex systems. In addition to performance evaluation simulations, the provision of user interaction through customisable control panels allows the simulator to be used in a gaming or training mode.

The emergence of new standards in distributed communicating objects (e.g. CORBA, java) and distributed simulation (e.g. HLA) offers the potential for simulations to be constructed by inter-connecting existing component models. However, past experience has shown that object orientation alone is not sufficient to exploit the opportunities for reuse. This paper proposes some items for inclusion in the requirement for a smart computer assistant which would manage the construction of distributed simulations and actively encourage the reuse of components by automating much of the process.

This paper describes our efforts in developing java class libraries to provide multimedia authoring capability similar to many high level commercial programming environments while also providing a rich mathematical simulation capability. The tools are being used to develop multimedia based simulation labware to augment junior and senior power systems labs. This authoring system will allow us to easily integrate C++ or java models of protective relays, three phase transformers, synchronous machines, and other equipment.
