This paper gives a bibliographical review of the finite-element methods applied to the analysis and simulation of polymers. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains references to papers, conferenceproceedings and theses/dissertations on the subject that were published between 1976-1996. The following topics are included: polymer flow and mixing simulation;polymer processing;thermal analysis of polymers;fracture mechanics of polymers;modelling polymer behaviours and their mechanical properties;practical polymer applications in engineering;other topics.

The tutorial gives an overview of state-of-the-art design patterns approaches, focusing on those that support the development of frameworks. The tutorial also introduces socalled hot spot cards. These cards proved to be a useful communications vehicle between domain experts and software engineers in order to exploit the potential of design patterns. Hot spot cards help in the early development phases to capture those system aspects that have to be kept flexible. Case studies based on java illustrate how to apply design patterns together with hot spot cards in various commercial application domains.

The potential of the new language of java is explored in the development of a decentralised target tracking simulator. Three particular features of the java language prompted this initial investigation, namely that it is fully object-oriented, graphical user interfaces (GUIs) may be simply constructed, and it, is Internet compatible. In the context of this paper, the full power of java's object-oriented design is harnessed to reflect the inherent modularity of decentralised tracking systems. This enables, for example, tracks with their associated information structures, and platforms with their associated tracks, to be encapsulated within advanced data structures, or classes. An easy-to-build GUI, based on java's Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT), permits the end-user to rapidly configure a test scenario by selecting simulation variables from pop-up menus, such as the number of sensor platforms, the number of targets, and the type of target trajectory. Additionally, java's Internet compatibility allows the simulation, in principle, to be accessed remotely. Development work on the java tracking simulator is described, and illustrated in terms of pseudo-code and screen snapshots. We conclude that in terms of our long-range goal of constructing a simulator that can aid the investigation of decentralised systems under a range of world scenarios and operating conditions, java shows considerable promise.

Traditionally, thermodynamics and heat transfer have been taught at the undergraduate level as separate disciplines, and results in one area have usually not penetrated into the other area. The internal combustion engine is a complex engineering system with rich thermal science applications, both in thermodynamics and in heat transfer. We have developed web-based software applications written in java which apply the disciplines of thermodynamics and heat transfer to internal combustion engines. The materials are being used in a introductory sophomore thermal science course which integrates thermodynamics and heat transfer, a junior level heat transfer course, and a senior level internal combustion engines elective class.

The mechanism of ionized cluster beam deposition has been studied using Molecular Dynamics simulation, The Embedded Atom Method (EAM) potential was used in the simulation. The impact of an Au-95-cluster on a Au(100) substrate was studied for impact energies of 0.15-10 eV/atom. The dependence of the impact energy of the cluster beam was observed. For a cluster energy impact of 10 eV per atom, defects on the surface were created and the cluster embedded into a substrate as an amorphous state. For an energy of 0.5 eV per atom, a defect-free homoepitaxial growth was observed and atomic-scale nucleation was formed, which are in good agreement with experiment. Thus the molecular dynamics simulation is very useful to study the mechanism of ionized cluster beam deposition.

Many co-simulation techniques either suffer from poor performance when simulating communications intensive systems, or they represent communications with a uniformly low level of detail. This paper presents a technique which allows communication to be represented at multiple levels of detail and which gives a designer the ability to dynamically choose the appropriate level for different parts of the system. This paper also presents a tool which uses this technique and experiments which show relative simulation speedups.
