A model of the basal ganglia (BG) is derived from a computational viewpoint. It is explained how anatomical and physiological features of BG can be understood in terms of the procedure for drive. The principles for the procedure is proposed, including an algorithm to calculate the desirability of a command. Several predictions are derived from the model. EEG data are discussed as corroborating evidences of the model, mentioning a computer simulation of EEG.
Ada and java offer comparable Object-Oriented Programming ("OOP") support, but through quite different approaches in both their general philosophies and their specific features. Each language allows the prog...

The Dynamic Focusing Approach (DFA) has been under development for several years. its intent is to address several of the issues of mixed level simulations, particularly the aggregational issues, Though the approach requires that the system be able to be modeled within certain constraints, many systems of interest fit well within them. This approach combines a hierarchical representation of knowledge with a stochastic propagation mechanism;this provides capability to gracefully move from coarse granularity to fine granularity under user guidance. Prototype tools have been developed for engineering analysis, combat simulation and TQM process implementation. This paper will give an overview of the approach and its current status.

SHIFT is a programming language with simulation semantics. The main distinguishing features of SHIFT are: 1) it models agents that have continuous time and discrete event dynamics and provides explicit syntax to specify such behavior, 2) it models systems that consist of heterogeneous set of interacting agents where models of individual agents are known and the goal is the study of the emergent behavior resulting from their interaction;3) it can simulate a dynamic set of agents, and 4) it can represent changes in the interaction dependencies among the agents. This paper provides an overview of the concepts and constructs in the SHIFT language.

Monte Carlo based multi-vehicle mission effectiveness analysis is constrained by the computational resources and time required to perform non-trivial studies. Discrete event simulators offer the potential to significantly reduce the amount of processing that is required to perform such analyses. The issues associated with exploiting discrete event simulation architectures for performance improvement are discussed. Strategies feb adaptively recognizing non-critical temporal intervals are presented. Pleiades, an implementation of a DEVS' compliant mission effectiveness simulator, is discussed.

The informatics of instrumented infrastructure will require multi-level computational abstractions that not only collect and de-clutter the data but also support higher-level automated seasoning capabilities relevant to decision support needs of both owners responsible for the safe operation of the facilities and users of those facilities. This paper describes the appeal and implemented demonstration of Internet-based paradigms for higher-level automated reasoning about condition of instrumented infrastructure using the java computing language. This enables interactive program execution from a web page. These notions are presented and demonstrated in the context of illustrative application scenarios involving fatigue monitoring, overweight vehicle detection, and bridge deck surface travel condition monitoring. By means of this demonstration, it is suggested that there is an important role for java-based expert systems in handling key aspects of the data fusion requirements associated with intelligent, internet-mediated post-processing of data obtained from instrumented civil infrastructure.

We propose a method to define constraint weight parameters of the Hopfield network in order to establish the solutions of the optimization problem as stable equilibrium points in the state space. Application of the methodology is demonstrated on a well known benchmark problem, the Traveling Salesman Problem. simulation results indicate that the proposed bounds on the constraint weight parameters establish the solutions as stable points and consequently, the Hopfield network consistently converges to a solution after each relaxation.

In digital circuit simulation hidden opportunities for concurrent execution of models often exist, arising from the propagation delay associated with the generation of output events by the circuit models. An event prediction algorithm is developed to identify such parallelism thereby, increasing the simulation execution rate. The algorithm uses an event prediction network and simulates circuits asynchronously and deadlock free, while honoring the preemptive semantics associated with digital circuit simulation.

NRL is developing an end-to-end distributed simulation environment in support of several Navy technology development programs. One of the critical needs in this distributed simulation environment is a tactical communications emulator. Current distributed simulation exercises seldom provide a flexible communications system model with realistic fidelity. As a result, we are creating a Tactical Communications Model Server architecture which operates in Advanced Distributed simulations (ADS). We are taking an evolutionary approach that will allow integration of specialized or general Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) communication connectivity models. This paper describes our objectives, the system architecture and design trade-off considerations.
