A numerical simulation is developed to investigate the role of adhesive forces during the normal impact of a rigid body against an elastic surface. The model consists of a rigid, 2D translating body and a surface that is composed of a flexible linear array of particles, coupled to a fixed base via linear springs. Adhesive effects are incorporated in the model by ascribing a Lennard-Jones type interaction potential between the surface and the body. Dynamical equations of motion for the interface are integrated numerically during an impact event. It is found that the coefficient of restitution decreases with increasing interaction strength and decreasing approach velocity. Above a certain interaction strength for given velocity and below a certain velocity for given interaction strength, the body is found not to rebound, but sticks to the surface. The simulation results are found to be in qualitative agreement with the impact model of Dahneke (1973, 1975). Quantitative discrepancies are explained by the effects of surface "plucking.". © 1997 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). All rights reserved.

The introduction of spatial, spectral and temporal discrimination in IR seekers has greatly increased the level of sophistication required of hardware-in-the-loop test facilities. In the long term, LR scene projectors offer promise of meeting many of these requirements. However, Wright Laboratory's Dynamic Infrared Missile Evaluator (DIME) Facility has ongoing requirements to evaluate state-of-the-art IR seekers. This paper describes reliable and effective techniques integrated into the DIME to meet current requirements for testing seekers with spatial. spectral and temporal discrimination capabilities.

Given a physical system, there are experts who have knowledge about how this system operates, In some cases, there exists quantitative knowledge in the form of deep models. One of the main issues dealing with these different types of knowledge is ''how does one address the difference between the two model types, each of which represents a different level of knowledge about the system?'' We have devised a method that starts with 1) the expert's knowledge about the system, and 2) a quantitative model that can represent all or some of the behavior of the system. This method then adjusts the knowledge in either the rule-based system or the quantitative system to achieve some degree of consistency between the two representations. Through checking and resolving the inconsistencies, we provide a way to obtain better models in general about systems by exploiting knowledge at all levels, whether qualitative or quantitative.

A hybrid system consists of continuous systems and discrete event systems, which interact with each other. In such configuration, a continuous system can't directly communicate with a discrete event system. Therefore, a form of interface between two systems is required for possible communication. An interface from a continuous system to a discrete event system requires abstraction of a continuous system as a discrete event system. This paper proposes a methodology for abstraction of a continuous system as a discrete event system using neural network, A continuous system is first represented by a timed state transition model and then the model is mapped into a neural network by learning capability of the network. With a simple example, this paper describes the abstraction process ill detail and discusses application methods of the neural network model. Finally, an application of such abstraction in design of intelligent control is discussed.

The Object Modeling Technique (OMT), a commonly used object-oriented development technique, comprises the object, dynamic, and functional models to provide three complementary views that graphically describe different aspects of systems. The lack of a well-defined semantics for the integration of the three models hinders the overall development process, particularly during the design phase. Previously, we formalized the object model in terms of algebraic specifications. However, the algebraic specifications only capture the static, structural aspects of a system. They do not explicitly describe the behavior, which is critical for system development, especially for the design phase. It is necessary to formalize the dynamic model in terms of the structural descriptions in order to specify and verify the system behavior using rigorous techniques. This paper presents a well-defined formal model for both the object and dynamic models and their integration. The formal model is described in terms of a well-known specification language, LOTOS. Formalization of the graphical notation enables numerous automated processing and analysis tasks, such as behavior simulation and consistency checks between levels of specifications.

The Multimedia Medical Data Archive and Retrieval Server has been installed at the Imaging science and Information Systems (ISIS) Center in Georgetown University Medical Center to provide medical data archive and retrieval support for medical researchers. The medical data includes text (CADx text report, patient demographic information), images (digitized films, CR, mammography, CT, US, MRI, NM, pathology), sound (stethoscope), and video (ultrasound and telemedicine consultation). All medical data is keyword indexed using a database management system and placed temporarily in a staging area and then transferred to a StorageTek one terabyte tape library system with a robotic arm for permanent archive. There are two methods of interaction with the system. The first method is to use a web browser with HTML functions to perform insert, query, update. and retrieve operations, These generate dynamic SQL calls to the database and produce StorageTek API calls to the tape library. The HTML functions consist of a database, StorageTek interface, HTTP server, common gateway interface, and java programs. The second method is to issue a DICOM store command,which is translated by the system's DICOM server to SQL calls and then produce StorageTek API calls to the tape library. The system performs as both an Internet and a DICOM server using standard protocols such as HTTP, HTML, java, and DICOM. Users with proper authentication can log on to the server from anywhere on the Internet using a standard web browser resulting in a user-friendly, open environment, and platform independent solution for archiving multimedia medical data. It represents a complex integration of different components including a robotic tape storage system, database, user-interface, WWW protocols, and TCP/IP networking. This paper overviews the development of an object oriented framework Sor the definition, simulation and analysis of earth moving projects, The classes and the behaviors they encapsulate are presented. These include graphical, simulation, data collection, statistical analysis, and reporting behaviors. The discussed method offers numerous benefits including a friendly user interface, a flexible and scaleable environment, as well as the ability to easily extend the supported functionality without changing the existing modules. This approach was used to implement a special purpose simulation environment for earth moving by the name AP2Earth. The implementation was further tested within a construction company in Alberta.

One of the major new technical challenges for distributed simulations is the distribution and presentation and distribution of the natural atmosphere-ocean-space environment. The natural terrain environment has been a part of such simulations far a while, but the integration of atmosphere and ocean data and effects is quite new. The DARPA Synthetic Environments (SE) Program has been developing and demonstrating advanced technologies for providing tactically significant atmosphere-ocean data and effects for a range of simulations. A general-purpose data collection, assimilation, management, and distribution system is being developed by the TAGS (Total Atmosphere-Ocean System) Project. This system is designed to support the new High Level Architecture (HLA) / Run-time Infrastructure (RTI) being developed by the Defense Modeling and simulation Office (DMSO), as well as existing Distributed Interactive simulation (DIS) network protocols. This paper describes how synthetic natural environments are being integrated by TAGS to provide an increasingly rich dynamic synthetic natural environment. Architectural designs and implementations to accommodate a range of simulation applications are discussed. A number of enabling technologies are employed, such as the development of standards for gridded data distribution, and the inclusion of derived products and local environmental features within 4-dimensional data grids.. The application of TAGS for training, analysis, and engineering simulations for sensor analysis is discussed.

simulation modelling is an ideal domain for the application of object-oriented methods, both in the modelling of problem domain entities and in the implementation of simulators. The paper describes a prototype development of an object-oriented animated, general purpose discrete-event simulation language which builds on the well established entity modelling notations of JSD and harnesses the object-oriented features provided by java to produce a high-level graphically defined simulation language providing customisable animations in a platform-independent way. Simple situations can be modelled quickly and simply, without the need for programming, whilst the provision of a programmatic API, coupled with the ability to extend the pre-defined entity class with the addition of java methods permits a flexible approach to handling more complex systems. In addition to performance evaluation simulations the provision of user interaction through customisable control panels allows the simulator to be used in a gaming or training mode.
