The reduction of main hull vibration of ships by a semiactive dynamic absorber is investigated. The dynamic absorber system includes a moving mass, support springs, dynamic dampers and a control system. Only small electrical power supply is needed for the valve control of the damper and the operation of the control system. In this investigation, the operation theory of the dynamic absorber is first described. Then, a suboptimal control law for the absorber is derived based on the optimal theory. The numerical simulation results show that the dynamic absorber achieves better efficiency in hull vibration reduction than the passive type absorber during critical periodical excitation from the propeller. The vibration caused by multi-frequency excitation can also be suppressed by the dynamic absorber. © 1997 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). All rights reserved.

As an advanced energy system the steam injected gas turbine (SIGT) is interesting for scholars and manufactures in China. After a series of theoretical studies of SIGT, a full-scale testing of a steam injected gas generator (SIGG) was conducted in China in 1990. The SIGG features, testing system features, testing program and testing results were described in a paper at 1992 ASME COGEN-TURBO Congress. Present paper aims to discuss the performance simulation method of SIGT and SIGG, and to compare the theoretical calculation with testing results. The emphases of this paper are: the physical-mathematical model of performance of SIGG and SIGT, coupling of component characteristics with gas generator testing results. The conclusions are: 1) the simulation results are consistent with testing results after coupling modification of component characteristics, 2) the output power of gas turbine and gas generator both increase with steam injection.

Currently popular object-oriented modelling methods, when applied to computer-based control systems, mostly produce incomplete and fragmented models - consisting mainly of state transition diagrams and message passing diagrams. Such shortcomings can limit the model's usefulness in the development process. In this paper, we present a formally-based object-oriented method to construct a precise and complete analysis model of the system, which can easily be converted into a simulation of the system or a prototype operating in the real environment. © 1998 IEEE.

In order to address the computational costs of modeling and analyzing manufacturing processes, a novel approach to virtual manufacturing process engineering using generic modular operations is presented. Relying on a state based representation of operation control for a simplified virtual manufacturing workcell, the valid states for each sequence of generic modular operations are aggregated and both operation state and processing constraints applied to specify the subtasks required to complete each step in a product's process plan. By adopting this state based control approach, virtual process engineering provides a direct mechanism to map virtual process representations onto actualized processes. Using these generic modular operations and their temporal and processing dependencies, the computationally complex elements of virtual manufacturing process simulation can be directly identified and an architecture for virtual process development specified. Examples from both machining and assembly processes are provided. © 1997 by ASME.

In this paper we describe a method for the use of the java object-oriented programming language for simulation. Our approach is to use the Unified Modeling Language, recently proposed for general-purpose modeling and software engineering, as a modeling and simulation language with java as the implementation platform. Using the Model-View-Controller design pattern, views are added to models for such purposes as statistics collection, animation, and checkpoint recording. Controllers are added to models to handle events, or in the case of a simulation, to synthetically generate events. CASE tools being developed for UML will include java code generation, making the approach proposed in this paper a practical method for simulation modeling.

A commercial hard disk drive spindle system is modeled as a flexible shaft with multiple flexible disks, which is supported by bearings, and its complicated coupled vibration characteristics are analyzed by using a substructure synthesis technique with the assumed-modes method. It is shown that, with the introduction of the three tuning parameters associated with the clamping radius of the disks, the stiffness of the cover and base structure and the radial stiffness of the bearings, the simulation model can well predict all the coupled modes of interest. © 1997 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). In this paper, we study an adaptive algorithm for routing in an all-optical wavelength routed network where a lightpath is dynamically created in response to a request for communication and the WDM channels constituting the lightpath are reclaimed when the communication is over. We have proposed three possible distributed strategies to determine, if possible, a lightpath when there is a request for communication. Each of these strategies have their advantages and disadvantages in terms of the expected blocking probability and the set-up time. We consider the Kautz digraph as the network topology and study the performance of our distributed strategies through simulation.

TN-LCDs having multidomain subpixels have been fabricated using photoalignment. These TN-LCDs exhibit a homogeneous and wide viewing angle. This paper places an emphasis on foul domain TN-LCD called super multidomain (SMD). The SMD-TN-LCD exhibits the maximum performance among other multidomain TN-LCDs which is shown in terms of computer simulation and experimental measurements done by the author's group. A non-rubbing technique is required for SMD;we also show that photoalignment is useful for fabricating SMD-TN-LCD. Some performance of an SMD-TN-LCD are demonstrated.

There are significant opportunities for the development of parallel/distributed simulation algorithms in the context of parametric study of discrete event systems. In such studies, simulation of multiple (often a large number of) parametric variants is required in order to, for example, identify significant parameters (factor screening), determine directions for response improvement (gradient estimation), find optimal parameter settings (response optimization), or construct a model of the response (meta-modelling). The computational burden in this case is to a large extent due to the large number of alternatives that need to be simulated. An effective strategy in this context is to concurrently simulate a number of parametric variants: the structural similarity of the variants often allows for significant amount of sharing of the simulation work, and the code for concurrent simulation of the variants can often be implemented in a parallel/distributed environment. In this paper, we describe two methods of parallel/distributed/concurrent simulation called the Standard Clock (SC) and the General Shared Clock (GSC) simulation. Both approaches rely on an event-reservation approach: by contrast to most discrete-event simulation approaches that are based on an event-scheduling approach, in the SC and GSC simulation, the occurrence instances of all events are reserved on the time axis. These instances may or may not be used. This event-reservation approach frees the dock mechanism of the simulation from needing feedback from the state-update mechanism. Due to this autonomy of the clock mechanism, a single clock can be used to drive a number (possibly large) of variants concurrently and in parallel. The autonomy of the clock mechanism is also the key to the different implementation strategies we adopt. To illustrate, we describe the simulation of parametric versions of wireless communication networks on message passing and shared memory environments.

In this paper, the geometric learning algorithm (GLA) is proposed for an elementary perceptron which includes a single output neuron. The GLA is a modified version of the affine projection algorithm (APA) for adaptive filters. The weights update vector is determined geometrically towards the intersection of the k hyperplanes which are perpendicular to patterns to be classified. k is the order of the GLA. In the case of the APA, the target of the coefficients update is a single point which corresponds to the best identification of the unknown system. On the other hand, in the case of the GLA, the target of the weights update is an area, in which all the given patterns are classified correctly. Thus, their convergence conditions are different. In this paper, the convergence condition of the 1st order GLA for 2 patterns is theoretically derived. The new concept ''the angle of the solution area'' is introduced. The computer simulation results support that this new concept is a good estimation of the convergence properties.
