Creating effective illustration depends on having a clear grasp of the information to be conveyed as well as a visual strategy for adapting the message for the audience. As image-makers versed in the `visual language of science', medical illustrators may spend as much time gathering information as finding ways to make the message accessible to particular audiences. With 3D animation technology, and tools for creating interactive and simulation products, a greater variety of visual solutions are possible in biomedical communication than with traditional art media. This round table discussion is intended to promote critique and evaluation of the ways in which using computer graphics has made a difference in how we present visual information.

This paper addresses the self-motion utilization of structurally flexible redundant manipulators to reduce the vibration of links when structural flexibility is present. Utilizing the self-motion capability, the motion-induced vibration can be further reduced by altering the joint trajectory during and after motion, while maintaining the end-effector tracing a given trajectory. That is because self-motion does not affect end-effector motion at all. In this proposed algorithm, a null space acceleration is evaluated in order to cancel the inertia force of flexural motion that is induced by its rigid body motion. A concept of modal space is applied to reduce the system degree of freedom. The dominant modal forces defined at a specific time, which are the same number of degree of redundancy can be effectively canceled out by employing selfmotion. Through numerical simulation with three-link planar robotic manipulators, the effectiveness and applicability of the suggested method have been demonstrated. © 1997 by ASME.

Several designs for a reduced resolution optical correlator are proposed. The design of reduced resolution filters by multiresolution wavelet analysis (MWA) or by downsampling is extended to spatial light modulators with fill-factors less than one. A reduced resolution optical correlator is constructed based on one of the above designs, and a comparison of MWA and downsampling filters is performed for different size targets. The experimental results show good qualitative agreement with simulation;however, the first-order correlation peaks were found to be greater for the experimental results. A possible reason for this is suggested and a new technique for measuring the fill-factor is proposed.

Two distinct types of free-electron laser simulations are in general use. In ''wiggler-averaged'' simulation codes such as FRED and TDA, the Lorentz force equations are averaged over a wiggler period. A reduced orbit analysis is obtained requiring integration only of equations for the energy and ponderomotive phase for each electron. In contrast, ''non-wiggler-averaged'' codes such as MEDUSA use the complete three-dimensional Lorentz force equations. A direct comparison of the two techniques is discussed in this paper using the MEDUSA and TDA codes.

Internet firewalls control the data traffic in and out of an enterprise network by checking network packets against a set of rules that embodies an organization's security policy. Because rule checking is computationally more expensive than routing-table look-up, it could become a potential bottleneck for scaling up the performance of IP routers, which typically implement firewall functions in software. In this paper, we analyzed the performance problems associated with firewalls, particularly packet filters, propose a good connection cache to amortize the costly security check over the packets in a connection, and report the preliminary performance results of a trace-driven simulation that show the average packet check time can be reduced by a factor of 2.5 at the least.

In this paper, we propose a new model for software projects and an estimation method for the quality, cost and delivery date. The new model consists of Project model and Process model. Project model focuses on three key components: activity, product and developer of the project. Process model includes a set of Activity models, each of which specifies design, coding, review, test, and debug activities respectively using GSPN. Moreover, the new model can take the influence of human factors into account by introducing the concept of ''workload''. Next, we develop a simulator which supports description of the target process, executes the process described by activity model and analyses the simulation results statistically. Then, we apply the simulator to real software projects at certain organization and compare the estimated values with actual data. The experimental results show the applicability of the proposed simulator to manage real software project in the future.

This paper offers a neural network model that can memorize and recall spatial maps. This is an improved version of the model we proposed previously (Fukushima, et al., 1996). When driving through a place we have been before, we can recall and imagine the scenery that we cannot see yet but shall see soon. Triggered by the newly recalled image, we can also recall other scenery further ahead of us. The proposed model emulates such a recalling process. In the computer simulation of the proposed model, we prepare a map, of Europe and assume a situation where one (in this case, our model) males a trip along railways. At first, the model wanders around Europe and captures and memorizes fragmentary maps around it. After that, the model males another trip along a neighboring rout. Whenever the model moves along a railway, the model recalls new maps ahead on the rout from the memory. Thus, an image covering a wide area is retrieved by a continuous chain process of recalling. Even though the traveling rout is novel to the model, the recalled maps are correct in most cases, if the model has made a trip in the neighborhood before. When the model visits a new place and fails to recall a correct map, the actual map around the model is simply added to its memory.

MOOSE (Multimodel Object Oriented simulation Environment) is an enabling environment for modeling and simulation, under construction at University of Florida, based on OOPM (Object Oriented Physical Modeling). OOPM extends object-oriented program design with visualization and a definition of system modeling that reinforces the relation of model to program. OOPM is a natural mechanism for modeling large-scale systems, and facilitates effective integration of disparate pieces of code into one simulation. Components of MOOSE are Modeler, Translator, Engine, and Scenario: (1) Modeler interacts with model author via GUI to capture model design, (2) Translator is a bridge between model design and model execution, reading Modeler output, building structures representing model, and emitting C++ (or potentially other) code for model;(3) Engine is a C++ program, composed of Translator output plus runtime support, compiled and linked once, then repeatedly activated for Model Execution;(4) Scenario is a visualization-enabling GUI which activates and interacts with Engine, and displays Engine output in a form meaningful to user. Dynamic model types supported include Finite State Machine, Functional Block Model, and Equational Constraint, models;alternatively, model authors may create their own C++ ''code models'';model types may be freely combined;class libraries facilitate reuse. MOOSE emphasizes multimodeling, which glues together models of the same or different types, produced during model refinement, reflecting various abstraction perspectives, to adjust model fidelity, during development and during model execution. Underlying multimodeling is ''Block'' as fundamental object. Every model is built from Blocks, expressed in a Modeling Assembly Language.
