The effects of steady direct current stimulation on wound healing were studied in a double-blind clinical trial involving patients with spinal cord injuries suffering from pressure ulcers. The therapeutic effect of electrical simulation depended on the positioning and shape of the electrodes. Healing of pressure ulcers was significantly enhanced by direct current, with the positive stimulation electrode overlaying the wound surface and the negative electrode placed on intact skin around the wound.

Many of multimedia applications in distributed systems should transmit continuous audio/video across networks when clients request. Typically, messages for continuous media in packet-switched networks are split into periodic, different sized packets with deadlines. Since clients request different typed services, traffic streams are heterogeneous. Furthermore, since the continuity of continuous media should be preserved, non-preemptive scheduling is preferred in multimedia communications. In this paper, we present a new non-preemptive scheduling algorithm which guarantees the timely delivery of more sets of messages for continuous media on a communication link connected to packet-switched networks. It schedules messages by using a heuristic based on the earliest deadline first (EDF) policy. It can always find a feasible schedule for messages which are schedulable by the EDF algorithm. We also present admission control given as sufficient conditions for a set of messages to be schedulable by the our scheduling algorithm for controlling the traffic load on a link. If a new request and the previous messages satisfy these conditions, it accepts the new request. The accepted message transmission is done like the circuit-switched transmission non-preemptively. Finally, we show the improvements in performance of our scheduling algorithm by simulation results.

The emergence of World Wide Web and java technologies has altered the view of the Internet. It provides an open standard interface among the heterogeneous computers on the Internet. To exploit the enormous computational resources on the Internet, we have developed a java-based parallel programming environment called java Message Passing Interface (JMPI). It runs on different machines regardless of their computer architecture or operating systems. It uses arbitrary machines on the Internet as computation nodes, and provides an application programming interface which follows the semantic of Message Passing Interface standard. This paper introduces a flexible, general purpose, integrated CAE system, called Durability and Reliability Analysis Workspace (DRAW). It carries out the simulation-based spectral fatigue damage and failure probability analysis of mechanical components. The system utilizes several CAE tools for the purpose of aiding engineers in the durability and reliability analysis at the component level in mechanical systems. It also provides a graphical, menu-driven user interface for quick and easy interaction with these tools. This paper explains the treatment in the implementation of the CAE system. The objective of this research is to provide a layer of network computational services for reliable remote computations and data transfers between an engineering workstation and a computation server on a high-speed computer. It incorporates methods of both engineering and computer science to allow the engineer to solve engineering problems through automation and reliability, utilizing high-speed procedures.

A new hierarchical block matching algorithm specially proper for a large search area, is proposed. The algorithm utilizes the spatial motion vector correlation under the fixed hierarchical search structure. Motion vectors of the causally neighboring blocks can be used to predict the motion vector of the current block, if the spatial motion vector correlation is strong. However, they are not helpful for searching complex or random motion. The proposed algorithm consists of two level searching steps. The higher one selects two initial estimates, one obtained by using motion vector correlation for continuous-motion, the other by using minimum mean absolute difference (MAD) for random or complex motion among rectangularly-sampled motion vector candidates in the search area, and the lower one is for the final motion vector refinement. Compared with previous hierarchical block matching algorithms, the scheme improves the accuracy of the estimated motion vector for random/complex motion as well as continuous motion. It is also proper for hardware implementation because of simple, fast, and regular search procedure. simulation results show that the proposed algorithm drastically reduces the computational complexity to 5.0% of that of full search block matching algorithm, with the minor PSNR degradation of 0.4 dB even in the worst case.

Evaluation of advanced sensing systems for Autonomous Vehicle Navigation (AVN) is currently carried out off-line with prerecorded image sequences taken by physically attaching the sensors to the ego-vehicle. The data collection process is cumbersome and costly as well as highly restricted to specific road environments and weather conditions. This work proposes the use of scientific animation in modelling and representation of real-world traffic scenes and aims to produce an efficient, reliable and cost-effective concept evaluation suite for AVN sensing algorithms. ROSE is organised in a modular fashion consisting of the route generator, the journey generator, the sequence description generator and the renderer. The application was developed in MATLAB and POV-Ray was selected as the rendering module. User-friendly graphical user interfaces have been designed to allow easy selection of animation parameters and monitoring of the generation process. The system, in its current form, allows the generation of various traffic scenarios, providing for an adequate number of static/dynamic objects, road types acid environmental conditions. Initial tests on the robustness of various image processing algorithms to varying lighting and weather conditions have been already carried out.

These cards proved to be a useful communications vehicle between domain experts and software engineers in order to exploit the potential of design patterns.
