Kinetic Energy Weapon (KEW) programs under the Ballistic Missile Defense Office (BMDO) need high fidelity, fast framing infrared (IR) imaging seekers. As imaging sensors have matured to support BMDO, the complexity of functions assigned to the KEW weapon systems has amplified the necessity for robust hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation facilities to reduce program risk. Tactical weapon systems are also turning to imaging focal plane array (FPA) seekers. They too require more sophisticated HWIL testing. The IR projector, an integral component of a HWIL simulation, must reproduce the real world with enough fidelity that the unit-under-test's (UUT) software will respond to the projected scenario of images as though it were viewing the real world. The MOSFET resistor array IR scene projector shows great promise in cryogenic vacuum chamber as well as room temperature testing. Under the Wideband Infrared Scene Projector (WISP) program, a second generation resistor array has been delivered and characterized. Characterization measurements to include: spectral output, dynamic range capability, apparent temperature, rise time, and fall time, have been accomplished on the second generation array at the Kinetic Kill Vehicle Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulator (KHILS) facility and the Guided Weapons Evaluation Facility (GWEF), Eglin AFB, FL. Dynamic range output exceeds the WISP specification. Other parameters such as, rise time etc., either meet or are close to meeting system specifications. The final design of the WISP arrays is currently in progress based on these results. Also reported on in this document are performance measurements of the analog drive electronics' noise level, accuracy and resolution. The performance of the drive electronics had to be established before any radiometric output could be measured.

A software package interfacing to SPICE is developed based on several new or revised models for hot electron studies. For substrate current generation, we present a new model for the characterizing the width of impact ionization region which is channel length and bias dependent. For modeling the hot electron injection into the gate oxide, a revised thermionic emission model is developed. For hot electron induced degradation, previously developed generation-trapping models are used. Good correlations with the experimental and simulation results are obtained. The program can be used to analyze the reliability and the biasing stability of MOS circuits.

Persistent data often has a long lifetime. During its lifetime, the types that are used to structure the data may undergo evolution to support new requirements or provide more efficient services. This evolution often makes the persistent data inaccessible unless it also evolves with the types. Existing systems that support type and data evolution focus on changes isolated to individual types, thereby limiting what can be easily accomplished during maintenance. We extend this work by presenting a model of compound type changes that can also describe changes simultaneously involving multiple types and their effects on data. We then describe TESS (Type Evolution Software System), a system to automate the evolution of types and their associated data when the types undergo compound type changes.

This paper applies the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing to the problem of optimal link enhancement, which is an NP-complete combinatorial optimization problem in the topological expansion of computer communication networks. Experimental results show that simulated annealing outperforms the genetic algorithm on this problem.

The ATM Forum has adopted rate-based congestion control for ABR (Available Bit Rate) traffic. Much of the existing work evaluating ABR congestion control schemes has used some threshold value on buffer queue length to indicate congestion. On the other hand, many ER (Explicit Rate) algorithms calculate their ''fair-share'' values based on utilization level, with the assumption that ER switches are able to measure the current utilization level of ABR traffic. If one would use the same mechanism-measuring utilization level-to indicate congestion, then the same switch could easily implement both binary and ER ABR control algorithms. Based on the above observations, in this paper we study the effect of using two different congestion indication methods: (1) Buffer queue length (the most commonly used method);and (2) Utilization level ( the new method). We evaluate two binary ABR control schemes: EFCI (Explicit Forward Congestion Indication) and CI (Congestion Indication) using backward notification, using the two different congestion methods. We also evaluate and compare two ER algorithms: the ERICA (Explicit Rate Indication for Congestion Avoidance) algorithm proposed by Jain and the CAPC-2 (Congestion Avoidance with Proportional Control-2) algorithm proposed by Barnhart. Performance evaluation are carried out by computer simulation. We simulate two ABR switches connected by an OC-3 link, with each switch connecting five end-systems. The distance between the two switches are 20 km for LAN and 1,000 lan for WAN, based on ATM Foam Specification. For each simulation run, we measure average queuing delay, maximum queue length, and network utilization. Traces of ACR (Allowed Cell Rate) and buffer queue length are also examined. We found that using the new congestion method indication dramatically reduces the maximum queue length and average queuing delay, with a slight decrease in utilization. Both ER schemes show smooth buffer occupancy and attain high utilization.

Commercially available anodised aluminium, vacuum evaporated aluminium foil, and roofing aluminium have been optically characterised in the wavelength range 300-2500 nm in a single beam Edwards sphere at oblique angle of incidence (60 degrees). The first two materials are long-term stable, which makes them promising to use as external reflectors. The third one is of interest because of its low cost. A model is proposed for the correction factors for the single beam sphere. A comparison between the single beam sphere and a Beckman 5240 standard spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere was made. The agreement between the measurements was excellent. Furthermore, angle resolved measurements were made with a scatterometer at 633 nm at the incidence angle 60 degrees for all three samples. These data were used in a simulation model to calculate the intensity in the collector plane, assuming a semi-infinite collector and dito external reflector. A calculation of a two-dimensional ideal Lambertian sample was also made. It is shown that optically dull materials, such as roofing aluminium, which has rolling grooves that scatter light, perform equally well as optically smooth materials, provided the scatter is confined to low angles. It is also concluded that integrating sphere measurements of the specular component of diffuse sample in standard spectorphotometers are misleading. The low-angle scattering of diffuse samples also contributes to the intensity in the collector plane and should therefore also be included in the measurement. For Lambertian samples the scatter is too high and such a surface is not a feasible choice of material.

We propose a nonlinear adaptive speed and torque controller of induction motors with unknown rotor resistance. All the system parameters except rotor resistance are assumed to be known and only the stator currents and rotor speed are assumed to be available. The desired speed and torque should be any continuously differentiable bounded function. A complete proof of the global stability without singularity is given and the output error will converge to zero asymptotically. Finally, simulation and experimental results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness.

The current work describes an instructional module which emphasizes integrative design using the six simple machines of the lever, the wheel and axle, the pulley, the inclined plane, the screw, and gear. The emphasis of this module is on having the students investigate the underlying scientific and mathematical properties of the 'machines', and then integrating this knowledge to design creative solutions to problems. This simple machines module makes use of an original web-based multimedia learning environment as well as off-line hands-on building activities with the LEGO Technic I set.

In this paper, we establish a generalized mergeability criteria for merging an arbitrary number of output sequences under conditions of stochastic independence of line errors. This result extends previously known mergeability criteria for merging pairs of output sequences. We also provide preliminary simulation results on combinational benchmark circuits.
