The view of processing as an integral part of function suggests that information systems must be embedded into the structure and dynamics of the functions they support. This requires that the architecture of the computer-based information system be compatible with the structure and dynamics of the organization it supports. In this paper we propose a model-based approach to the development of information systems that uses models of the structure and dynamics of organizations in order to develop effective function support. The proposed approach uses a conceptual tool to model key features of the structure and dynamics of the organization and a methodology that maps such features into the architecture of its supporting information system. A modeling and simulation environment is suggested that includes an extensive model base that can be used for the simulation and analysis of organizational function in addition to its use in systems development.

In this paper, we present the problem of scheduling real-time jobs in a hypercube system and propose a scheduling algorithm. The goals of the proposed scheduling algorithm are to determine whether all jobs can complete their processing before their fixed deadlines in a hypercube system and to find such a schedule. Each job is associated with a computation time, a deadline, and a dimensional requirement. Determining a schedule such that all jobs meet before their respective fixed deadlines in a hypercube system when preemption is not allowed is an NP-complete problem. Hence, we present a heuristic scheduling algorithm for scheduling non-preemptable real-time jobs in a hypercube system. Finally, we evaluate the proposed algorithm using simulation.

The authors consider beam propagation in a linear and lossless parallel dielectric waveguide, extending the Crank-Nicholson method to a three-level finite difference scheme based on the Helmholtz wave equation. Stability analysis indicates that the three-level scheme is stable with small oscillatory behavior. However, simulation results exhibit conditional stability and the bigger the propagation step size, the more oscillation results.

We compare five regression testing algorithms that include: slicing, incremental, firewall, genetic and simulated annealing algorithms. The comparison is based on the following ten quantitative and qualitative criteria: execution time, number of selected retests, precision, inclusiveness, user parameters, handling of global variables, type of maintenance, type of testing, level of testing, and type of approach. The experimental results show that the five algorithms are suitable for different requirements of regression testing. Nevertheless, the incremental algorithm shows more favorable properties than the others.

Presents a method for distributed caching to exploit the aggregate memory of networks of workstations in data-intensive applications. In contrast to prior work, the approach is based on a detailed cost model as the basis for optimizing the placement of variable-size data objects in a distributed, possibly heterogeneous two-level storage hierarchy. To address the online problem with a priori unknown and evolving workload parameters, the method employs dynamic load tracking procedures and an approximative, low-overhead version of the cost model for continuous reoptimization steps that are embedded in the decisions of the underlying local cache managers. The method is able to automatically find a good tradeoff between an "egoistic" and an "altruistic" behavior of the network nodes, and proves its practical viability in a detailed simulation study under a variety of workload and system configurations.

Proposes a combined controller structure and algorithm which integrates a cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) with fuzzy logic and bang-bang control under an intelligent supervisor. This neuro-fuzzy controller has self-learning ability in real-time and can readily be applied to industrial process plants. This paper presents a new dynamic load balancing algorithm for hypercube multicomputers with faulty nodes. The emphasis in our method is on obtaining global load information and performing task migration using "short paths" in a synchronous manner so that a minimal amount of communication overhead is required. To accomplish this, we present an algorithm for constructing a new logical topology from a hypercube topology with faulty nodes. This new topology is used to obtain the global load information and to perform task migration. simulation results are used to evaluate the performance of our dynamic load balancing method. The proposed strategy shows good performance in the case of a small number of faulty nodes when compared with previous methods.
