A new interconnection network structure, based on the concept of pipelining, is proposed. This structure comprises of one control plane and a set of data planes. The control plane is responsible for determining the routing decisions for arriving packets and assigning packets which would be successfully routed to the various data planes. simulation results show that the throughput of the proposed network is close to unity, and the average delay is very small even in networks with 1024 input lines and just one buffer at each input line. Thus, this network is more attractive for use in broadband communications switch fabrics than those based on the banyan structure.

Advanced control of glass tanks using simulation models and fuzzy control

With the current improvements in the capabilities of mathematical simulation models, these models can be used for control applications, opening a new methodology for controlling glass furnaces for optimal glass quality. The method is based on three steps. From classical theories a set of basic models can be derived that roughly describes the relationship between furnace design, glass properties, and operation, with settings on the one hand and the glass quality on the other. These relations are simplified, but they form a good basis for designing control strategies. This type of model can be fine-tuned using a detailed mathematical simulation model. Existing nonlinearities, can be built into these simplified models by employing adaptive neuro-fuzzy interference system techniques. The resulting controller is very transparent and robust. For setpoint changes the controller is employed as a feed-forward controller. An example for color change is shown.

Fast and efficient processor allocation and job scheduling algorithms are essential components of a multi-user multicomputer operating system. In this paper we propose two novel processor management schemes which meet such demands for mesh-connected multicomputers. A stack-based allocation algorithm that can locate a free sub-mesh for a job very quickly using simple coordinate calculation and spatial subtraction is proposed. simulation results show that the stack-based allocation algorithm outperforms all the existing allocation policies in terms of allocation overhead while delivering competitive performance. Another technique, called group scheduling, schedules jobs in such a way that the jobs belonging to the same group do not block each other. The groups are scheduled in an FCFS order to prevent starvation. This simple but efficient scheduling policy reduces the response rime significantly by minimizing the queueing delay for the jobs in the same group. These two schemes, when used together can provide faster service to users with very little overhead.

Instruction cache prefetching is a technique to reduce the penalty caused by instruction cache misses. The prefetching methods generally determine the target line to be prefetched based on the current fetched line address. However, as the cache line becomes wider, there may be multiple branches in a cache line which hurdles the decision made by these methods. This paper develops a new instruction cache prefetching method in which the prefetch is directed by the prediction on branches. We call it the branch instruction based (BIB) prefetching. In BIB prefetching, the prefetch information is recorded in an extended BTB. simulation results show that, the BIB prefetching outperforms the traditional sequential prefetching by 7% and other prediction table based prefetching methods by 17% on average. As the BTB designs become more sophisticated and achieve higher hit and accuracy ratio, the BIB prefetching can achieve higher performance.

Speeding up logic simulation is important to reduce design time of complex systems. Hardware emulation through reconfigurable systems (RS) built using FPGA's offer an cheap and efficient method to achieve the required speed-up. Emulation through RS poses some unique problems because of the limited circuit and I/O resources. A preparatory step for emulation using RS is to partition the circuit into as few parts as possible satisfying the resource constraints. This paper presents multi-objective search based optimal and approximate algorithms for circuit partitioning for this purpose.

We describe a comprehensive simulation methodology and tool for evaluation of software energy for the pipelined DLX processor. Energy models for each module of DLX are built and the energy is evaluated during run time execution. The input to the simulator are the instructions of the program and the simulator estimates energy of each micro-instruction using the energy models. Our simulator allows exploration of energy by allowing architecture modification, experimentation with different software techniques (compilation optimizations, algorithm evaluation) and also allows simultaneous interplay of both hardware and software techniques. The usefulness of this simulator is demonstrated by evaluating certain compilation optimizations (loop unrolling, software pipelining, recursion elimination etc.) and algorithms.

Summary form only given. When simulating hybrid discrete-continuous dynamical systems a key problem is the discontinuous model behavior. The state derivatives may change in a discontinuous way depending on the discrete state of the model. Conventional simulation algorithms are not suitable to integrate such hybrid system models with high accuracy and reasonable computational effort. In this paper we present results obtained with the simulation tool HYSIM we are developing. HYSIM can efficiently and accurately simulate hybrid systems including state and time events and sliding modes.

Considering that the application of a direct-sequence slotted spread ALOHA communications system in the access/control channel is effective in systems with traffic channels operating in the CDMA mode, spread ALOHA communications is discussed in terms of the system configuration and throughput performance. The throughput performance of the spread ALOHA communications system using a unified spread code is derived by means of two methods. One is based on the simulation of the demodulation algorithm, and the other is based on an approximation by simple modeling. The modeling consists of two main conditions depending on the collision of packet signals. It becomes obvious from a quantitative evaluation that the approximated results coincide with the simulated results, and that the modeling is very effective in evaluating the system's throughput performance.

The unified power flow controller (UPFC) is a power electronic controller which can be used to control active and reactive power flows in a power transmission line the by injection of (variable) voltage in series and reactive current in shunt configuration. In this paper, the authors evaluate the performance of a control strategy for UPFC in which they control real power flow through a power line, while regulating the magnitudes of the voltages at its two ports using transient simulation. The real power reference is modulated in order to improve the damping of power swings in the line. The effectiveness of the UPFC with this control strategy is clearly brought out by the simulation study.

In order to set up international standards for medical infrared thermography the authors have been developing an international communication tool on the World Wide Web (WWW) named Biomedical Thermology Homepage (http://***/bmth/). The methodology and system concept have been reported (I. Fujimasa et al., 1996). In this report, the concept and methodology of the image database named Gallery are reported. The keynotes are how one establishes remote access of image handling software to analyze common source binary images in the database. The authors have developed software which was written with Visual Basic and java. The system, which has included more than 20000 binary images, has been tested for its feasibleness from remote sites.
