In this paper, we propose two modifications to soft output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) for turbo code decoding. One is to limit the reliability values to a small range to compensate for the defect brought by overestimating those values in the original SOVA. The other is to employ a new block interleaver to combat the tail effect of SOVA-based turbo code decoding. The simulation results show that the new SOVA with both modifications is able to obtain a similar result to that achieved by a maximum a posteriori (MAPI) algorithm with a random interleaver. In this paper, we also provide the results of the SOVA with the Battail's updating rule and compare them to those of the SOVA with the updating rule proposed by Hagenauer.

In this paper, we present a methodology for extracting macromodel parameters of compressible isothermal squeezed-film damping (CISQFD) for flexible structures of MEMS under small amplitude oscillation. The theoretical derivation, which is based on structural modal analysis and CISQFD numerical simulation, is presented. The spring and damping components of CISQFD of any oscillation mode can be extracted by this methodology, and thus the generic parameters of CISQFD can be obtained for any flexible structure with given oscillation modes. We successfully formulated an accurate and concise second order dynamics equation for a flexible MEMS devices by using the CISQFD parameters and the modal spring constant and mass. simulation results of resonance shift and quality factor are consistent with experimental results.

An automatic facial feature extraction algorithm is presented in this paper. The algorithm is composed of two main stages: the face region estimation stage and the feature extraction stage. In the face region estimation stage, a second-chance region growing method is adopted to estimate the face region of a target image. In the feature extraction stage, genetic search algorithms are applied to extract the facial feature points within the face region. It is shown by simulation results that the proposed algorithm can automatically and exactly extract facial features with limited computational complexity.

A feedback linearizing decoupling dynamic control scheme of nonholonomic underactuated manipulators with free-swinging passive joints is proposed in Cartesian space where the task is planned. The presented control scheme does not require any braking process of passive joints. The presented dynamic control scheme has so-called "dynamic singularities" in the controller. Therefore, the singularities must be avoided an the path planning so as to guarantee the availability of the control scheme. Singularity-free desired paths in Cartesian space avoiding the dynamic singularities are obtained through a computer simulation. simulation results for a three-link planar manipulator with one passive joint are presented to show the feasibility of the proposed control scheme with the singularity-free desired trajectory.

Many computer science departments offer a course that features a software development project where students work as part of a team. An objective of this type of course is to simulate an industrial development environment thereby allowing students to experience some of the dynamics that they will encounter after completion of their study. The accuracy of the simulation can be improved, and hence the educational experienced enhanced, by the incorporation of industry participation directly into the course. Difficulties in organising and administering the project in the context of industry participation can occur in practice, which serve to deter the incorporation. This paper motivates industry participation in a team project course by identifying the potential benefits for the students, some of which are implicit, and also those for the industry sponsor, lecturer and host academic institution. A methodology for incorporating industry participation, which can be employed to overcome the difficulties in achieving these benefits, is presented. A model for administering a team project course in the context of industrial participation, which includes the use of an intranet as an enabling technology, is also described. The methodology and model, which have been employed successfully, can be utilised to improve the quality of the educational experience resulting from team project software development courses.

This paper presents the position control algorithm of a wheeled mobile robot (WMR) using an inertial navigation system (INS) and Kalman filter to realize it for an actual system. To adopt the INS in a control system, an error model is essentially required. This INS error model is derived by a Gauss-Newton method and it is tested by fitness diagnosis to check its availability. The position control algorithm including an INS and a Kalman filter with error model is pursued by computer simulation. The simulation study of the proposed scheme shows that position errors remarkably decrease when this INS and filter system are applied.

In this paper we describe GOLDENGATE-a bridging fault simulator for cell-based digital VLSI circuits with the following features: 1. It targets both combinational and sequential circuits. 2. It simulates general (routing, adjacency, and intra-cell) realistic bridging faults efficiently through a table-based scheme. The pre-computed table contains accurate cell output voltage and I/sub DDQ/ values obtained through electrical-level simulations. 3. It simulates both feedback and nonfeedback bridging faults (BFs) efficiently through a cycling event-driven technique. 4. It allows mixed voltage and I/sub DDQ/ simulation to support a fully hybrid test scheme where mixed logic and I/sub DDQ/ sensings are allowed. The experimental results show that GOLDENGATE is both accurate and fast.

Beam shaping of array antennas has attracted the attention of many researchers for many years because of its primary application in tracking and ground mapping radars, etc. Several methods have been suggested by them depending on the shapes desired and computational power available. A new approach i.e. using a genetic algorithm approach is adopted to synthesize arrays to produce desired beam shapes. This approach has the advantage that several design criteria required to comply with EMC standards can be met in one synthesis procedure simultaneously. simulation results for a particular case have been presented.

This paper describes algorithms for implementing a high-level programming model for synchronous distributed groupware applications. In this model, several application data objects may be atomically updated, and these objects automatically maintain consistency with their replicas using an optimistic algorithm. Changes to these objects may be optimistically or pessimistically observed by view objects by taking consistent snapshots. The algorithms for both update propagation and view notification are based upon optimistic guess propagation principles, adapted for fast commit by using primary copy replication techniques. The main contribution of the paper is the synthesis of these two algorithmic techniques-guess propagation and primary copy replication-for implementing a framework that is easy to program and is well suited for the needs of groupware applications.

Presents an integrated approach (practices) to object-oriented distributed application development that covers all phases of software development: requirements capture, analysis, design (structural and behavioural), simulation and targeting to CORBA-based distributed processing environments. We focus on a code generation strategy that addresses and supports all phases of the practices. We highlight code generation objectives including support for multiple paths through the practices, reuse of existing tool-sets and support for traceability. We describe one path in more detail and present an example of design-OMT-to-SDL translation based on labelling in OMT. We describe two development environments used in the project and analyse them with respect to their support for our code generation objectives. Our tool adaptation work is addressing identified weaknesses. This includes an SDL-to-java/CORBA code generator, the generation of CORBA-to-SDL-mapping C++ wrappers for C code generated by existing tools and the use of CORBA to integrate development tools and support traceability.
