Object-oriented multitasking control environment for multirobot system programming and execution with 3D graphic simulation

This paper describes an object-oriented distributed control environment for industrial multirobot applications. A distributed computing environment, where workpieces, robots, and other industrial devices such as a vision sensor are defined as software objects with class inheritance hierarchy, supports human-friendly task-level programming and automated robot program generation with 3D graphic simulation, and performs supervisory and real-time sensor-based coordinated control of multirobot systems. Using object-oriented multitasking control with a preemptive rescheduler, vision-based robot positioning and pick and place operations for exchange of a workpiece are demonstrated to validate the control performance of the computing environment.

The authors examine the impact of background lumiphore on image quality in luminescence optical tomography. A modification of a previously described algorithm is developed that estimates the background luminescence directly from the detector readings. Numerical simulations were performed to calculate the diffusion-regime limiting form of forward-problem solutions for a specific test medium. Image reconstructions were performed with and without white noise added to the detector readings, using both the original and the improved versions of the algorithm. The results indicate that the original version produces unsatisfactory reconstructions when background lumiphore is present, while the improved algorithm yields qualitatively better images, especially for small target-to-background lumiphore ratios.

This paper proposes a new approach to hidden-layer size reducing for multilayer neural networks, using the orthogonal least-squares (OLS) method based on the Gram-Schmidt orthogonal transformation. A neural network with a large hidden-layer size is first trained via a standard training rule. Then the OLS method is introduced to identify and eliminate redundant neurons such that a simpler neural network is obtained. The OLS method is employed as a forward regression procedure to select a suitable set of neurons from a large set of preliminarily trained hidden neurons, such that the input to the output-layer neuron is reconstructed with less hidden neurons. simulation results are included to show the efficiency of the proposed method.

This paper presents the reconfiguration of multicast tree at the instance of node migration in cellular wireless networks. We consider a novel, and highly practical, formulation of the real-time multicast problem. Unlike the traditional notion of source to leaf node message transmission time being the measure for real-time, we consider the multicast tree re-construction time (in the event of a node migration) as the measure for real-time constraints. The overall goal is to minimize both the delays-i): delay of re-constructing the multicast tree and ii) source to destination transmission delay. In this paper we introduce and provide solutions for the first objective, while the current research in real-time multicast tree considers the latter objective only. We propose three heuristics to solve the real-time multicast tree re-construction problem and present analysis and simulation results for different factors that contribute differently to the reconstruction delay.

In a distributed real-time database system, if data conflicts occur between executing and committing transactions, the performance can be severely affected. In this paper, we propose an approach, called deadline driven conflict resolution (DDCR), which integrates concurrency control and commitment management in resolving data conflicts between executing and committing transactions, while at the same time maintaining the schedules to be serializable. With DDCR, many of the data conflicts can be alleviated, and concurrent execution of transactions is allowed to access data items being held by committing transactions. The impact of temporary failures occurred during the commitment of a transaction on other transactions is reduced by reversing the dependencies between the transactions. simulation experiments have been performed and the results show that DDCR can significantly improve the system performance especially when the duration for the voting phase is long.

This paper proposes a real-time sensor based navigation method using Kohonen's topology conserving network for navigation of a mobile robot in any uncertain environment. The sensory information including target location with respect to current location of the mobile robot, have been discretely conserved using a two dimensional Kohonen lattice. Reinforcement learning based on a stochastic real valued technique have been implemented to compute the action space for this Kohonen lattice. The proposed scheme learns the input and output weight space of the Kohonen lattice which is generalized to any workspace. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme has been established by simulation where the complete domain of the input-space is quantized based on experience on sensory data encountered in real-time. The input-output mapping conserved by the Kohonen lattice during simulation was used to guide a mobile robot in a real-time environment. Successful navigation of the mobile robot without further training confirms the robustness of the proposed scheme.

A study on the control of robot manipulators with free-swinging passive joints overcoming actuator failures is performed. In the case that the passive joints have neither actuators nor brakes, a robust adaptive control scheme overcoming the uncertainties is proposed in Cartesian space where tasks are planned, for underactuated manipulators. The proposed control scheme does not need a priori knowledge of the accurate dynamic parameters and the exact uncertainty bounds. The availability of the proposed control scheme is guaranteed by the assumption that the joint configuration remains in the inside of nonsingular regions during the total control process. To overcome this dynamic singularity problem for a nominal decoupling matrix in the controller, a singularity-free desired Cartesian path-planning in the outside of singular regions is achieved via a computer simulation. To illustrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed control scheme, simulation results for a three-link planar robot manipulator with one passive joint are presented.

For continuous state space applications, a novel method of Q-learning is proposed, where the method incorporates a region-based reward assignment being used to solve a structural credit assignment problem and a convex clustering approach to find a region with the same reward attribution property. Our learning method can estimate a current Q-value of an arbitrarily given state by using effect functions, and has the ability to learn its actions similar to that of Q-learning. Thus, our method enables robots to move smoothly in a real environment. To show the validity of our method, the proposed Q-learning method is compared with conventional Q-learning method through a simple two dimensional free space navigation problem, and visual tracking simulation results involving a 2-DOF SCARA robot are also presented.

Interprocedural analyses enable optimizing compilers to more precisely model the effects of non-inlined procedure calls, potentially resulting in substantial increases in application performance. Applying interprocedural analysis to programs written in object-oriented or functional languages is complicated by the difficulty of constructing an accurate program call graph. This paper presents a parameterized algorithmic framework for call graph construction in the presence of message sends and/or first class functions. We use this framework to describe and to implement a number of well-known and new algorithms. We then empirically assess these algorithms by applying them to a suite of medium-sized programs written in Cecil and java, reporting on the relative cost of the analyses, the relative precision of the constructed call graphs, and the impact of this precision on the effectiveness of a number of interprocedural optimizations.
