This paper illustrates a method for the design of parallel programs that is based on the separation of computation and coordination. We use Gamma programs to specify computations and show how to prove their correctness using a UNITY-like programming logic. A separate coordination language is used to determine behavioural aspects of the program. We illustrate how behaviour can be structured through a process of successive stepwise refinements. Reasoning about refinement is supported formally by two types of simulation. As an illustration of our method we study the problem of solving triangular systems of linear equations. For this problem we derive a number of known algorithms and show how they are related by our refinement ordering.

We consider the sharing of processors in parallel computer systems. In general, the main goal of the systems, better performance, decreases processor utilization. We model and simulate a multi-tasking parallel operating system, and estimate its performance degradation and overall system throughout in the case where threads share a processor. We formalize the system by using DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification), and implement it in the DEVS simulation environment. simulation results show that the processor sharing between threads is acceptable in the sense of TPP (throughput per processor).

The shape optimization of polymer extrusion die is achieved in this study. It is necessary to analyze the die flow three-dimensionally in order to get practical flow field due to the complex geometry of extrusion die. The die flow is simulated using three-dimensional finite element method. The die geometry is modeled in new way to get appropriate design variables. For the optimization of die geometry, solution strategy of inverse problem is applied. The optimum design of extrusion die is formulated as the quadratic optimization problem. The optimum geometry can be determined automatically from the solution of the quadratic optimization problem by several iterations.

In our previous research we revealed that eye velocity becomes blunt during saccade as the vigilance state gets lower. In this study we examined the bluntness of saccade velocity by simulating saccadic eye movements using a model of saccade generation. Blunt saccade was achieved by means of changing parameters of pulse generator in the model. Adequate values of the model parameters for 4 typical experiments were assumed by fitting simulated eye velocity to the experimental eye velocity. Comparison of the values of the model parameter to /spl alpha/ power calculated from the EEG measured with saccade revealed a high correlation between characteristics of pulse generator and vigilance states. Since the pulse generator exists in pontine reticular formation, which also belongs to the controlling system of vigilance state, it was suggested from the results that decline in the activity of pulse generator in the brain stem caused the blunt saccade.

Offsets inherent in analog circuits have been big obstacle in analog implementations of backpropagation algorithm. In this article the effects of analog multiplier offsets on on-chip learning are systematically analyzed. Offsets in a multiplier are mathematically modeled and incorporated into backpropagation learning equations. The deformed equations are investigated to show how the offsets degrade learning performance and under which conditions the neuron's output fails to converge. simulation results agree well with analytic calculations.

We propose a method to define constraint weight parameters of the Hopfield network in order to establish the solutions of the optimization problem as stable equilibrium points in the state space. Application of the methodology is demonstrated on a well known benchmark problem, the traveling salesman problem. simulation results indicate that the proposed bounds on the constraint weight parameters establish the solutions as stable points and consequently, the Hopfield network consistently converges to a solution after each relaxation.

A new adaptive connection admission control scheme is proposed. The aggregate statistics of all calls in progress are continuously measured and new calls are considered as CBR at their peak during certain warming up period. The main features of our proposed CAC scheme are (1) an adaptive mechanism which updates the warming up period based on the traffic conditions, (2) an accurate mechanism to predict cell loss, and (3) a simple and conservative way to consider call departures. We demonstrate by simulation that the scheme is more efficient than several other schemes.

Interconnection networks with irregular topologies (or irregular networks) are ideal communication subsystems for workstation clusters owing to their incremental scalability. While many deadlock-free routing schemes have been proposed for regular networks such as mesh, torus, and hypercube, they cannot be applied in irregular networks. This paper presents a cost-effective routing architecture, called TRAIN, to solve the routing problem with irregular networks. We show that TRAIN is a deadlock-free scheme. Furthermore, unlike many other routing schemes proposed previously for irregular networks, TRAIN does not require a routing table in the switch. Due to this feature, a TRAIN switch is small and the routing decision can be made rapidly. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of our routing scheme, analysis and event-driven simulation have been performed for various irregular networks. Our results show that TRAIN outperforms other schemes with a higher maximum throughput and lower average latency consistently.

This paper introduces a new vision technique for extracting roof edges of polyhedra having specularly reflecting surfaces. There have been many previous works on object recognition using edge information, but they can not be applied to specular objects since it is hard to acquire reliable camera images of specular objects. If there is a method which can extract the edges of specular objects, it is possible to apply edge-based recognition algorithms to specular objects. To acquire the reliable edge images of specular objects, scanned double pass retroreflection method is proposed, whose main physical characteristic is curvature-sensitive. This utility of the physical characteristic is motivated by the idea that roof edges can be characterized as local surfaces of high curvature. In this paper, the optical characteristics of double pass retroreflection are discussed and a series of simulation studies are performed to verify and analyze the sensor characteristics. The results from a series of simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Proposes a vibration control method for flexible structures using a servo-type vibration sensor which can measure both signals of velocity and displacement simultaneously under low frequency range. For controlling the vibration of flexible structures, it is necessary to measure velocity and displacement signals of these structures. When the structure is taller, its natural frequency is lower, and hence it is required to construct the sensor with a lower frequency of measuring range. The proposed sensor uses a positive feedback of the relative displacement for reducing its natural frequency actively. Therefore, the sensor with light mass and hard spring can be constructed for realizing this requirement. The effectiveness of the proposed sensor is demonstrated by both the simulation and experimental studies of controlling the vibration of a scaled bridge tower structure with a low natural frequency.
