This paper presents an unsupervised segmentation approach applying the mean field annealing (MFA) heuristic with the modified cost function. The idea is to cast a clustering problem as a minimization problem where the criteria for the optimum segmentation is chosen as the minimization of the Euclidean distance between samples to cluster centers. To resolve the optimal problem using a Hopfield or simulated annealing neural network, the penalty terms are combined into a weighted sum using several coefficients determined by user. Using the MFA network to medical image segmentation, the need for finding weighting factors in the energy function can be eliminated and the rate of convergence is much faster than that of simulated annealing. The experimental results show that good and valid solutions can be obtained using the MFA neural network.

The ATM Forum has adopted the rate-based scheme as the standard for ABR services. Effective ABR services are essential for ATM LAN emulation. The authors propose a new algorithm or scheme that has equivalent or better performance than existing schemes, but requires only O(1) computation. This O(1) computation is independent of both the number and rates of the connections. The scheme, called the "USF scheme", is compared via simulation to the existing EPRCA, MIT, and OSU schemes. Results show that the less complex USF scheme provides better throughput, delay, and fairness than the existing schemes.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a prototyping, analysis, simulation, and synthesis environment called PASS for real-time application systems. The design of the PASS environment is based on an event-driven model, whereas certain timing constraints such as period are described implicitly. The PASS environment supports not only detection of possible violations of end-to-end delay requirements but also a way to verify important system properties such as the bound for the error propagation problem. The strengths of this work were demonstrated by a case study on a common chalkboard example over Ethernet.

The discontinuous current mode control scheme for AC/DC converters with active power filtering function and power factor correction scheme has seen widespread use for single phase input power conversion supplies, because this control implementation has practical advantages of simple control system configuration and cost-effectiveness. But this control scheme has not been for three phase input power conversion supplies because the three-phase PFC converter characteristics of conventional control scheme for three phase BC mains have significant disadvantages. In order to improve the disadvantages, a new PFC converter circuit configuration with discontinuous current mode control scheme suitable for three phase AC mains is proposed by the authors. This paper presents an operating principle and unique features of the proposed three phase active PFC converter topology and its control strategy on the basis of simulation results. In addition the harmonic analysis of the utility-grid side current of the proposed three-phase PFC converter is carried out as compared with the conventional ones.

We perform model validation of a wormhole router system. Our simulation model is calibrated through measurement of our real wormhole router system. The average latency of real system output is in the 95% confidence interval of our simulation model. This validated model can be applied to the performance analysis of the large wormhole router system with strong confidence.

A rate-based congestion control algorithm regulates cell emission rate of source end systems based on feedback information from the network. It was standardized by the ATM Forum for application to an ABR (available bit rate) service class. In the standard, two types of congestion notification methods of the switch are specified: EFCI marking and explicit-rate marking. In this paper, we focus on the explicit-rate marking switch. We propose our enhancements on a recently proposed switch algorithm known as the max-min scheme. The main objective of our enhancements is to control the queue length of the switch for preventing cell loss and achieving full link-utilization. We show the effectiveness of our switch algorithm by simulation experiments.

This paper illustrates a method for the design of parallel programs that is based on the separation of computation and coordination. We use Gamma programs to specify computations and show how to prove their correctness using a UNITY-like programming logic. A separate coordination language is used to determine behavioural aspects of the program. We illustrate how behaviour can be structured through a process of successive stepwise refinements. Reasoning about refinement is supported formally by two types of simulation. As an illustration of our method we study the problem of solving triangular systems of linear equations. For this problem we derive a number of known algorithms and show how they are related by our refinement ordering.

We propose a technique for online built-in self-test of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The goal of this system is to detect deviations from the intended functionality of an FPGA without using special-purpose hardware, hardware external to the device, and without interrupting system operation. A system that solves these problems would be useful for mission-critical applications with resource constraints. We present here a fault detection system which solves these problems through an online fault scanning methodology. Resources internal to the device are configured to test for faults. Testing scans across an FPGA, checking a section at a time. The viability and effectiveness of such a system is supported through simulation of the system on a model FPGA.

The paper introduces a method for identification of MISO systems with finite impulse responses (MA) using third-order cumulants. The method was derived from the well known C(q,k) formula for the SISO systems (Giannakis 1987), which works for the MA models only. The necessary condition of our method is, that all transfer channels h/sub r/(n) are of different order q/sub r/ and that input white noises are spatially uncorrelated. The variance analysis computing the third-order cumulant of the output signal for the superimposed systems is discussed as well. simulation confirms that under the necessary conditions the method works well, but the variance of identification results of the subsequent channel response grows and very long output signals have to be applied for circulation of the third-order cumulants of the output signal in MISO systems.

The shape optimization of polymer extrusion die is achieved in this study. It is necessary to analyze the die flow three-dimensionally in order to get practical flow field due to the complex geometry of extrusion die. The die flow is simulated using three-dimensional finite element method. The die geometry is modeled in new way to get appropriate design variables. For the optimization of die geometry, solution strategy of inverse problem is applied. The optimum design of extrusion die is formulated as the quadratic optimization problem. The optimum geometry can be determined automatically from the solution of the quadratic optimization problem by several iterations.
