This paper examines the problem of schedule revision in a distributed job shop where the object is to minimize the global makespan. Schedules of work cells may interact through precedence constraints, and a work cell's response to a local schedule disruption may affect schedules of other cells. Complete knowledge about how local schedule changes affect the global schedule may require global knowledge about the schedule. Here, we show that knowledge of only local constraints may be almost as useful as global knowledge for the revision of one cell's schedule. We present simulation results from a general distributed job shop model.

The present paper proposes new graphical representation methods of the dynamic behavior of power systems. Four kinds of representation methods based on computer animation techniques are proposed in this paper. These representations make it possible to visualize the results of dynamic stability, voltage stability simulations and the results of eigenvalue analysis using a personal computer. With the help of these representations, one can easily understand the dynamic characteristics of electrical power systems.

A visually lossless colour image (VLCI) coder is proposed based on the embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT) [D. Taubman, July 2000] coding structure. The VLCI coder is adapted with the contrast gain control [A. B. Watson and J. A. Solomon, 1997] model for the identification and removal of visually redundant information in the spectral domain prior to encoding. Since no additional side information are required and no modifications are involved at the decoding end, this coder is fully compliant with the EBCOT bitstream. Thus, it can be easily adapted to any JPEG2000 standard coder. The proposed coder has been designed to perform visually lossless compression independent of viewing distances. It currently operates in the Y/sub D/C/sub b/C/sub r/ composite colour domain. simulation results of the VLCI coder has shown marked improvements over the LOCO [M. Weinberger et al., 1996] and the near-lossless LOCO (d2) coder in terms of compression ratio.

Conventional cache architectures exploit locality, but do so rather blindly. By forcing all references through a single structure, the cache's effectiveness on many references is reduced. This paper presents a cache assist namely the annex cache which implements a selective caching scheme. Except for filling a main cache at cold start, all entries come to the cache via the annex cache. Items referenced only rarely will be excluded from the main cache, eliminating several conflict misses. The basic premise is that an item deserves to be in the main cache only if it can prove its right to exist in the main cache by demonstrating locality. The annex cache combines the features of Jouppi's (1990) victim caches and McFarling's (1992) cache exclusion schemes. Extensive simulation studies for annex and victim caches using a variety of SPEC programs are presented in the paper. Annex caches were observed to be significantly better than conventional caches, better than victim caches in certain cases, and comparable to victim caches in other cases.

The application of the least-mean-square (LMS) and recursive-least-square (RLS) algorithms to the estimation of symbol period is discussed. The algorithms are based on the measurement of the time between two consecutive detected transitions in noisy waveforms. Two versions of the algorithm are developed for white and colored measurement noise models. Conditions are derived that guarantee proper behavior, i.e. the convergence, of the LMS and RLS algorithms. simulation results show the convergence of algorithms and compare the algorithms with respect to convergence speed.

State-of-the-art advances in sensors, communication, and computing technologies have made military missions involving uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) a reality. UAVs are aircraft without the onboard presence of pilot or aircrew. Much of the UAV research has focused on the necessary electronic, mechanical, communication, and computing infrastructure, while equally important to mission success is the role of the human as a remote, supervisory controller. There is a need for an interactive modeling and simulator environment to support analysis of research issues associated with human interactions and automated control in the UAV domain. This article describes a computational environment for interactive modeling and simulation of uninhabited aerial vehicles. The environment, implemented in java, is useful for emulating relevant characteristics of the human/system interaction for purposes of analysis. This paper outlines the design and evaluation of the architecture for modeling uninhabited aerial vehicles in the context of a prototypical military mission.

Several studies have documented a temporal gradient in the memory of persons with Alzheimer's disease: patients are better able to recall more distant memories. The significance of this gradient is unclear: does the disease selectively interfere with the recall of recent memories, or does it prevent the memories from being adequately recorded? To address this question, neural networks were used to simulate learning over time. Once trained with a group of patterns, the networks were damaged to simulate the lesions associated with Alzheimer's disease. By altering the number of times a network was trained with a given pattern before additional patterns were added, and by varying the number of patterns in the training set, the direction of the temporal gradient was changed. The factors that determine the direction of the gradient are in place before the network is damaged. This suggests that the gradient associated with Alzheimer's disease is not a direct result of brain lesions that are hallmarks of the disease, but instead develops from an alteration of the learning process that begins long before dementia develops.

With improvements in technology, accurate delay modeling of interconnects is becoming increasingly important. Due to decreasing feature sizes, the spacing between the signal lines is also decreasing. Consequently, the switching activities on the neighboring lines can have a significant impact on the delay of the line of interest, and can no longer be ignored. Accurate modeling of this phenomenon, which we call the proximity effect, is the subject of this paper. This is similar to the state-dependency of logic gate delays, where signal delay can be affected by the switching activities on the side inputs of a gate. We describe an efficient and accurate delay computation method using precomputed interconnect moments that treats the coupled lines as uniform, distributed RC lines and does not make any lumped approximations. This allows the proposed delay model to be used in a timing analysis tool operating over both gate and interconnect domains while accounting for state-dependency.

In recent years, single-phase PWM current source bridge inverters using active power switches in series with a diode have attracted special interest in place of voltage-fed PWM inverters in utility-interactive power systems. On the other hand, this type of inverter has a significant disadvantage to be improved in practical applications, in that the output current delivered from this inverter includes a large amount of harmonic components when the smoothing DC reactor is not large enough to sufficiently eliminate the ripple components in the DC current. Thus, this paper presents an effective pulse area modulation control strategy to eliminate the harmonic current components in the AC side of single-phase current source PWM inverters. The principle of the proposed control strategy for this inverter system is described, and its simulation results are introduced and evaluated.
