We describe a real time software engineering toolkit called ASSERTS that provides complementary analysis and simulation capabilities to assist the real time system designer. ASSERTS is configuration independent and allows users to describe the parameters of the hardware platform, interconnection and the kernel and the task system for the purpose of simulation and analysis. The simulation component of ASSERTS is quite detailed and features a number of built-in models for practical real time schedulers, interconnections and resource access protocols. Users can define the behavior of the tasks at various levels of abstraction using a fairly small set of macroinstructions. ASSERTS allows users to quickly gain an insight into the design of the software as it evolves and also allows "what if" studies to be done very easily.

With improvements in technology, accurate delay modeling of interconnects is becoming increasingly important. Due to decreasing feature sizes, the spacing between the signal lines is also decreasing. Consequently, the switching activities on the neighboring lines can have a significant impact on the delay of the line of interest, and can no longer be ignored. Accurate modeling of this phenomenon, which we call the proximity effect, is the subject of this paper. This is similar to the state-dependency of logic gate delays, where signal delay can be affected by the switching activities on the side inputs of a gate. We describe an efficient and accurate delay computation method using precomputed interconnect moments that treats the coupled lines as uniform, distributed RC lines and does not make any lumped approximations. This allows the proposed delay model to be used in a timing analysis tool operating over both gate and interconnect domains while accounting for state-dependency.

The problem of taxi despatch from a pool of taxies, either waiting at the taxi stand or plying free in the city is addressed. Calls for taxies may emanate from different parts of the city. The taxi stand operator is aware about the status (i.e. waiting, busy, free) and position of all taxies associated with the taxi stand at any time. While despatching the taxi for a call, the operator should consider its vicinity with the calling point in order to reduce the service time. On the other hand, the operator should be fair to all the taxi drivers, and maintain proper distribution of opportunities to each one of them. Two rules; 'nearest vehicle first' and 'least utilized vehicle first' are normally used to meet the above objectives. However, both these objectives cannot be simultaneously met with any one rule. In this paper we propose a fuzzy combination of the two rules to fulfill both the objectives at the same time. The fuzzy combination approach has the potential to take many such contradicting parameters into simultaneous consideration. A simulation model is also presented to demonstrate the results of such fuzzy combination of rules.

This paper presents the prototype of a new conceptual electromagnetic induction-based fluid heating appliance using an efficient series capacitor-compensated load resonant high-frequency IGBT inverter with phase-shifted PWM and power factor correction schemes. Its operating characteristics in the steady-state are illustrated and evaluated on the basis of its computer simulation and experimental results on a 10 kW breadboard appliance. Promising cost-effective appliances for electromagnetic induction-type fluid-heating in pipeline systems are proposed for an induction-heated boiler, a super heated steamer, a hot water producer, a hot gas producer and metal catalyst heating for engine exhaust cleaning applications.

The paper discusses techniques for extracting feature lines from three-dimensional unstructured grids. The twin objectives are to facilitate the interactive manipulation of these typically very large and dense meshes, and to clarify the visualization of the solution data that accompanies them. The authors describe the perceptual importance of specific viewpoint-dependent and view-independent features, discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of several alternative algorithms for identifying these features (taking into consideration both local and global criteria), and demonstrate the results of these methods on a variety of different data sets.

In this paper, turbo codes are investigated in a slow frequency-hopped spread spectrum (FH-SS) system with partial-band jamming. In addition, full-band thermal noise is present. This paper focuses on the implementation of a modified turbo decoder for this model. We consider cases of known or unknown channel state and variable number of bits per hop. Our approach is to modify the calculation of branch transition probabilities inherent in the decoder. Analytical bounds are derived and simulation is performed for coherent demodulation. The results drawn from this code are compared with a convolutional code.

We propose a novel signal-selective approach to enumerating the signals of interest (SOIs) impinging upon an array of antennas. This new signal selective information theoretic criterion (SSITC) is derived by formulating the likelihood function for parameters of second-order cyclostationary signals in unknown stationary interference plus noise, and then applying Rissanen's MDL principle. We demonstrate through computer simulations that SSITC is able to perform correctly when there are more signals than sensors, the angular separations among the interferers and the signals of interest are arbitrarily small, and directional (spatially colored) noise is present. Thus, SSITC is an appropriate source enumerator to use in conjunction with cyclostationarity-exploiting direction-finding algorithms, such as cyclic MUSIC, and cyclostationarity-exploiting blind adaptive spatial filtering algorithms, such as SCORE and PCCA.

The efficient allocation problem plays an important role in partitionable multiprocessor system. It is critical to the performance of parallel computers, especially for large-scale parallel computers. In this paper, we propose a new enhanced two-dimensional buddy system (E2DBS) strategy which overcomes the drawbacks of previous two-dimensional buddy system (2DBS) strategy, such as four non-buddy submeshes can be allocated, the requesting tasks and the system needs not be square. In E2DBS, we propose an adaptive data structure, called free sub-mesh matrix (FSM), to maintain the free submeshes, which can allocate and deallocate processors easily. simulation results indicate that our strategy outperforms the previous ones, i.e. 2DBS strategy and best fit strategy, in terms of system processor utilization and average waiting time under various system loads for rectangle requesting tasks with side lengths are powers of 2.

The need to rapidly reconfigure an agile manufacturing system makes it especially difficult to test the system's control software. Although thorough testing is essential for system reliability, the time available for testing may be short. With a simulator, however, the software can be developed and tested independently from the actual workcell, while production continues or the workcell is reconfigured for the next target product. To facilitate testing of agile manufacturing software, a 3D graphical simulator has been developed at Case Western Reserve University. It permits workcell control software to be tested with a virtual workcell, which exhibits much of the behavior of the real workcell. The simulator has been extensively used in the Agile Manufacturing Project at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), and most of the actual control software was tested and debugged with it. Considerable time and effort have been saved by simulating various workcell scenarios, some of which are difficult to create in a real workcell, e.g., device failure. In this paper, the architecture of the graphical simulator is described, and a framework for virtual testing is presented. Actual errors found during virtual testing are also described.

Workpiece localization, with novel applications such as workpiece setup, refixturing and dimensional inspections, is a problem of permanent importance in manufacturing. Using the popular least square formulation, several geometric algorithms have been developed for workpiece localization over the last few years. In this paper, we analyze and compare the performance of three localization algorithms based on the following criteria: (a) robustness with respect to variations in initial conditions; (b) accuracy of computed results; and (c) computational efficiency. We develop an approach for improving the robustness of the algorithms for workpieces with sculptured surfaces for which the region of convergence is typically small. Based on simulation results, we also discuss sensitivity of the algorithms with respect to the number of measurement points and give a lower bound on this number for recovering a Euclidean transformation with certain accuracy.
