A new low loss quasi-parallel resonant DC-link (NLQPRDCL) inverter which shows highly improved PWM capability, low loss characteristic and low voltage stress is presented. A method to minimize freewheeling interval, which is able to largely decrease DC-link operation losses and to steadily guarantee soft switching in the wide operation region is proposed. In addition, lossless control of zero voltage duration of the DC-link makes the proposed inverter maintain the advanced PWM capability even under a very low modulation index. simulation and experiment are performed to verify the validity of the proposed inverter.

Summary form only given. We have developed a system in which a mobile robot can modify maps of an indoor environment automatically through change detection at planned locations. The robot is a car-like one equipped with sonar sensors. The indoor space is assumed to be surrounded by walls and has some movable objects of planar surfaces perpendicular to the floor. In the map updating process, the robot moves to a planned observation location and collect range data on the local region around itself by using the sonar range sensors. The robot's position is estimated by a localization method, and visible changes are detected by comparison of structural range descriptions with the original and partially updated maps. As the result, the map is further modified and a new observation location is selected. In this paper, we present a method by which a mobile robot estimates its position at each location it reaches by using information from dead reckoning, real sonar range data and the partially outmoded map. simulation experiments show the method is efficient enough for localization in a changeable complex environment.

We propose a new method to improve the accuracy of the transition density for the estimation of delay dependent switching activities in combinational circuits. In the previous method, glitching sensitivity concept was defined and used to modify the transition density so as to generate and propagate the glitch. To account for the inertial delay effect, the same technique that is commonly used in logic simulators to filter out unacceptably short pulses was used. However, since it does not keep transition density at each occurrence time separately, it is not adequate for the accurate estimation of glitch and inertial delay effect. In addition, it underestimates the difference between probabilistic property of the transition density and the deterministic property of signals in logic simulations in computing inertial delay effect. We describe the problems of the previous methods and propose a new method called time-stamped transition density to solve the problems. We also show the extensions of the method to consider possible delay variation due to imperfections in the manufacturing process. The experimental results demonstrate the validity of our proposed method.

This paper presents a novel prototype of resonant DC link with a two-level PWM control scheme and a three-phase voltage-fed PWM inverter with a resonant DC link. This resonant DC link circuit is capable of controlling two-level PWM modes; a clamped supply voltage PWM and zero voltage PWM modes in the DC bus line can operate under the principle of zero voltage and zero current soft-switching. The operating analysis is carried out and a design procedure of this resonant DC link is described on the basis of simulation results. A three-phase voltage-fed inverter and power converter using this unique resonant DC link are analyzed which operate under a new pulse vector modulation scheme and their performances in a utility-interactive power processor for a battery energy storage system (BESS) are evaluated and discussed, including a reactive current compensator and active power filter using this resonant DC link.

Zerotree based algorithms represent the state of the art in wavelet based image coding. At a high level, these algorithms can be described as first sending a map of the locations of the zero coefficients (the set of zerotree symbols), and then sending the value of nonzero coefficients. However, the decision of what map to send is typically made using some simplifying assumption on the structure of the map, motivated by some empirically observed property of the data (e.g., that zero coefficients are likely to appear in tree structured sets). In this article, the map of the locations of the zero coefficients is optimally estimated as a hidden binary Markov random field (MRF). Algorithms are presented for the estimation of the hidden field given the observed wavelet coefficients, for encoding the field, and for encoding the data given the field estimate. simulation results show a very competitive rate/distortion performance of the coding algorithm, equal or superior to any published zerotree based image coder: this fact provides conclusive empirical evidence that the proposed model is appropriate for the data.

This paper proposes real-time traffic management algorithms over a multihop optical network. Our algorithms consider dynamic scheduling of (time, wavelength) slots in a multihop TWDM transmission schedule, so that a set of time-critical messages can meet their hard (and, soft) deadlines. Hard real-time messages are assigned to the highest priority level, while soft real-time messages are assigned to user-defined, progressively lower priority levels. The objective is to schedule these messages, all or as many as possible following the priority ordering. Previous research in this direction are either static scheduling policies (which cannot adapt to varying traffic conditions), or dynamic scheduling but for non-realtime traffic. Performance is measured in simulation. Where input factors include load, proximity of the deadline values, relative mix of hard and soft real-time messages, and priority levels of the messages.

This paper presents a new discrete-time robot model. In general, the discrete-time robot models are derived by using discretizing methods to robot dynamical differential equations. The obtained models are very complex in structure, and are thus difficult to implement in practical applications. In this study, a simple discrete-time robot model is developed by using the trapezoid rule to approximate the integration part of continuous-time robot equation, and then successfully eliminating the nonlinear force terms and external force term from the robot equation. The proposed discrete-time robot model has very simple structure, and the controller based on this model owns inherent robustness to external forces. Both pole placement control and adaptive control schemes are designed for a 2-link manipulator. simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed model, and verify its property of robust to external forces.

An approach based on the continuous wavelet transform and their local maxima for the speech processing is presented. We study on some issues of wavelet functions for instantaneous frequency extraction of speech signals. From then we conclude a suitable mother wavelet for the speech processing. The local maxima, which are located on the high-energy concentration curves in the time-scale domain of the wavelet transformed images, are discussed for a number of mother wavelets. They reveal the local as well as global features of the speech signal. The formants can be observed very clearly in the coarse scale modulus maximum image, whereas the pitch periods can be extracted in the fine scale modulus maximum image of the transformation. The simulation also depicts a robust approach for the case of speech signals embedded in random noise.

We propose QLT/MT (Queue Length Threshold with Multiple Thresholds) as a dynamic priority cell scheduling mechanism to serve efficiently the multimedia traffic in ATM networks. The multimedia traffic can be categorized into three classes based on its real time properties and loss tolerance. QLT/MT is designed to schedule the traffic so that first served can be the most urgent class in terms of the priority of its class and the state of its queue. In the QLT/MT model, the cell scheduling relies on the number of cells in the queue of each class and its state determined by multiple thresholds. In order to evaluate our mechanism, the cell loss rate and average delay of QLT/MT are compared with those of the conventional mechanisms such as SPS, QLT, DQLT and DHOL. The simulation result shows that both the cell loss rate and average delay of QLT/MT measured for each class are lower in most cases than those of the other schemes.

This paper presents a reduction method of higher harmonic currents using an active filter at the AC side of a condenser input-type three-phase diode bridge rectifier. As an active filter, a three-phase PWM inverter is connected in parallel to rectifier. The principle of the active filter is to cancel higher harmonic currents contained in load current by injecting reversed phase harmonic currents into the power source side. In this system, an optimal digital servo controller with dead time compensation is used to reduce the higher harmonics at the current controller. The root locus method and the simulation are used to obtain optimal weighting factor of a performance criterion and to select the control method. Finally, power spectra of a load side current and a source side one are shown. Experimental results are shown to verify the usefulness of this system.
