SMC (Sheet Molding Compounds) is a thermosetting material which consists of unsaturated polyester resin and other additives reinforced with randomly distributed chopped fiberglass strands. During the compression molding cycle, it is very difficult to understand the overall effects of SMC resin components on flow characteristics and mechanical performance of the molded parts, since mold geometries and processing variables are complex. Thus, a three dimensional rigid thermo viscoplastic finite element program including chemical reaction and fiber volume fraction prediction was developed in the present study and applied to the analysis of compression molding of a SMC charge. To verify the validity of this approach, numerical fiber volume fraction predictions were compared to fiber volume fraction data measured by image processing. Three dimensional simulations under various molding conditions were carried out to obtain more thorough knowledge of the SMC compression molding process. Based on this study, it was found that the currently developed three dimensional finite element program coupled with heat transfer and chemical reaction can provide valuable information in understanding flow characteristics, fiber volume fraction distribution, and the curing behavior of SMC compression molding in detail.

The World Wide Web (WWW) on the Internet has been recognized as an effective environment to create new distributed applications that have the potential to bring instruction beyond the bounds of the classroom. The availability of browsers (e.g. Mosaic, Netscape, Hot java) has enormously simplified the access to the WWW, and there have been numerous initiatives to take advantage of this new technology for teaching. This work will illustrate recent developments of tools for engineering education and technology transfer which take advantage of WWW browsers, java applets, and virtual reality. We have developed modules based on WWW browsers incorporating educational and research software, including advanced visualization, which find use for multimedia classroom presentations accessible by Internet users, and which can also improve interaction among academic groups and industry, Therefore, the material is suitable for asynchronous distance learning and technology transfer. Examples of interactive WWW applications include device simulation semiconductor band structure calculation, numerical techniques, and electromagnetics.

Describes the Complex Adaptive Financial Environment (CAFE/spl acute/), a simulator for complex adaptive systems implemented in java. CAFE/spl acute/'s object-oriented design makes it suitable for many types of simulation. We give an example of a market simulation where food is traded for gold and explore the effects of adding several kinds of speculators to the system. This paper describes the software structure and design of CAFE/spl acute/, building upon the object-oriented and distributed features of the java programming language. Although the primary application for this system is in the computational finance area, we envision a much more general usage.

Object-oriented methods and programming are increasingly being used in the second (CS 2) data structures course in Computer science. As this course migrates to an object-oriented approach, students and instructors must be given material to support a unified and application-oriented course. In this paper we report on modules developed for what we term an Applied Apprenticeship Approach to the CS 2 course using an object-oriented framework.

The implementation of dynamically bound object oriented programming languages require the ability to quickly bind a logical reference to a method and to quickly allocate a context for the invoked method. In this paper we examine how a method lookup cache (MLC) and a register windowing mechanism can speed up method binding and context allocation. We also show how the MLC can be incorporated into a contemporary pipelined datapath. A detailed register level simulation of the proposed scheme, driven by a set of fairly intensive object-oriented applications, show that a relatively small method lookup cache with only 64 or 128 entries reduces the average execution time of the applications by about 50%. With register windowing and the MLC, execution time reduces by 76% to 87% with respect to the base machine.

A simulation based decision support tool called ACE has been developed for Pepsico Restaurants International (PRI) allowing restaurant managers to quickly and accurately analyze a given restaurant, ACE gives the restaurant manager a tool to evaluate the customer point of contact within a given restaurant. This simulation based tool uses Arena for the model and Lotus 123 for the interface. PRI has installed this tool in two of the six international regions and will by early 1997 have it in all of the international regions.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International conference on Scientific Computing in Object-Oriented Parallel Environments, ISCOPE '97, held in Marina del Rey, California, in December 1997. The volume presents 36 revised papers carefully selected for inclusion in the book. The papers address run-time performance optimization at several levels, new language programming paradigms, applications of java-based technology, direct applications in various areas, object-oriented libraries, and new ideas and approaches to parallel scientific computing. All in all, this is an up-to-date presentation of the state-of-the-art in the application of object-oriented methods in scientific and engineering applications.

The PaCT-2003 (Parallel Computing Technologies) conference was a four-day conference held in Nizhni Novgorod on September 15–19, 2003. This was the 7th international conference of the PaCT series, organized in Russia every odd year. The ?rst conference, PaCT-91, was held in Novosibirsk (Academgorodok), September 7–11, 1991. The next PaCT conferences were held in: Obninsk (near Moscow),30August–4September,1993;***,September12–15,1995; Yaroslavl, September 9–12, 1997; Pushkin (near St. Petersburg) September 6– 10, 1999; and Akademgorodok (Novosibirsk), September 3–7, 2001. The PaCT proceedings are published by Springer-Verlag in the LNCS series. PaCT-2003 was jointly organized by the Institute of Computational - thematics and Mathematical Geophysics of the Russian Academy of sciences (Novosibirsk) and the State University of Nizhni Novgorod. The purpose of the conference was to bring together scientists working with theory, architectures, software, hardware and solutions of large-scale problems in order to provide integrated discussions on Parallel Computing Technologies. *** from 23 countries submitted 78 papers. Of those submitted, 38 papers were selected for the conference as regular ones; there were also 4 invited papers. In addition,*** reviewed by at least three referees. As usual a demo session was organized for the participants. Many thanks to our sponsors: the Russian Academy of sciences, the Russian Fund for Basic Research, the Russian State Committee of Higher Education, IBM and Intel (Intel laboratory in Nizhni Novgorod) for their ?nancial support. The organizers highly appreciate the help of the AssociationAntenne-Provence (France).
