This paper introduces a domain-specific modeling language (DSL) for modeling application-level network protocols. Application-level messages may be expressed in object-oriented general-purpose programming languages as classes. Instances of these classes can be sent through the network with the help of a customized serialization process. However, protocols have several special characteristics that do not fit easily into this abstraction, for example, bitfields or specially encoded lists. Furthermore, the limitations of generic serialization frameworks inhibit using them for this purpose. These factors suggest creating a DSL that more easily expresses these protocols and allows for code generation to support application-level messaging. Application-level messaging is a crucial part of cloud services that follow the Software as a Service (SaaS) paradigm and it must be implemented at both clients and servers. A DSL that allows for efficient modeling of the messages and generating implementation code significantly simplifies the development of cloud applications.

Modern IDEs support automated refactoring for many programming languages, but support for JavaScript is still primitive. To perform renaming, which is one of the fundamental refactorings, there is often no practical alternative to simple syntactic search-and-replace. Although more sophisticated alternatives have been developed, they are limited by whole-program assumptions and poor scalability. We propose a technique for semi-automatic refactoring for JavaScript, with a focus on renaming. Unlike traditional refactoring algorithms, semi-automatic refactoring works by a combination of static analysis and interaction with the programmer. With this pragmatic approach, we can provide scalable and effective refactoring support for real-world code, including libraries and incomplete applications. Through a series of experiments that estimate how much manual effort our technique demands from the programmer, we show that our approach is a useful improvement compared to search-and-replace tools.

A prototyping system for hardware distributed objects using a hardwired ORB (object Request Broker) protocol processing engine was implemented on Xilinx Zynq-7000 platform;by which a circuit IP on an FPGA can be operated from application software on Linux/ARM processor through an object-oriented method call. The proposed framework increases controllability and design-productivity on FPGA-based systems. A developer can define an object-oriented interface for a circuit IP in an FPGA, and implement the control sequence part using JavaRock Java-to-HDL synthesizer. By the conformance to the standard CORBA (Common object Request Broker Architecture) protocol, circuit IPs in an FPGA can be handled through object-oriented interface from diversity of programing languages;like C++, Java, Python and so on. The round trip delay performance measurement of the prototype system was done on Xillybus FIFO interface channel.

We propose DelphJ: a Java-based OO language that eschews inheritance completely, in favor of a combination of class morphing and (deep) delegation. Compared to past delegation approaches, the novel aspect of our design is the ability to emulate the best aspects of inheritance while retaining maximum flexibility: using morphing, a class can select any of the methods of its delegatee and export them (if desired) or transform them (e.g., to add extra arguments or modify type signatures), yet without needing to name these methods explicitly and handle them one-by-one. Compared to past work on morphing, our approach adopts and adapts advanced delegation mechanisms, in order to add late binding capabilities and, thus, provide a full substitute of inheritance. Additionally, we explore complex semantic issues in the interaction of delegation with late binding. We present our language design both informally, with numerous examples, and formally in a core calculus.

Reactive applications are difficult to implement. Traditional solutions based on event systems and the Observer pattern have a number of inconveniences, but programmers bear them in return for the benefits of OO design. On the other hand, reactive approaches based on automatic updates of dependencies - like functional reactive programming and dataflow languages - provide undoubted advantages but do not fit well with mutable objects. In this paper, we provide a research roadmap to overcome the limitations of the current approaches and to support reactive applications in the OO setting. To establish a solid background for our investigation, we propose a conceptual framework to model the design space of reactive applications and we study the flaws of the existing solutions. Then we highlight how reactive languages have the potential to address those issues and we formulate our research plan. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

We steadily aim at improving our first year's university course Introduction to object-oriented Modelling. To that end we explore how technological teaching support may be used to extend the classical class- room experience for the students. For several years, we used Web-based out-of-the-box e-learning tools for providing additional teaching support. This solution works well, but has some severe restrictions. In this paper, we show how to overcome these restrictions with a custom implementation. Further, we are now starting to explore mobile facilities as offered by smartphone Apps as well as social media facilities in order to enhance the learning experience in our modelling course. We report on our first experiences with these kinds of technologies.

An important decision that must be taken by anyone designing a course involving (object oriented software) modelling is what tool support, if any, to use. Options include picking an industrial strength modelling tool, using a tool specifically designed for educational use, or eschewing tool use altogether in favour of pencil and paper. The best answer will depend on many factors, including the prior experience of the students (and staff), the length and organisation of the course, and the learning objectives. Moreover, decisions on tools have an impact on other aspects of course design. In this informal paper, the result of discussion at the MODELS Educators' Symposium 2013, we survey previous work on this question, discuss our own experience, and draw out some key issues that someone designing a new course involving modelling must consider.

Whenever the need to compile a new dynamically typed language arises, an appealing option is to repurpose an existing statically typed language Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler (repurposed JIT compiler). Existing repurposed JIT compilers (RJIT compilers), however, have not yet delivered the hoped-for performance boosts. The performance of JVM languages, for instance, often lags behind standard interpreter implementations. Even more customized solutions that extend the internals of a JIT compiler for the target language compete poorly with those designed specifically for dynamically typed languages. Our own Fiorano JIT compiler is an example of this problem. As a state-of-the-art, RJIT compiler for Python, the Fiorano JIT compiler outperforms two other RJIT compilers (Unladen Swallow and Jython), but still shows a noticeable performance gap compared to PyPy, today's best performing Python JIT compiler. In this paper, we discuss techniques that have proved effective in the Fiorano JIT compiler as well as limitations of our current implementation. More importantly, this work offers the first in-depth look at benefits and limitations of the repurposed JIT compiler approach. We believe the most common pitfall of existing RJIT compilers is not focusing sufficiently on specialization, an abundant optimization opportunity unique to dynamically typed languages. Unfortunately, the lack of specialization cannot be overcome by applying traditional optimizations.

The JavaScript programming language, originally developed as a simple scripting language, is now the language of choice for web applications. All the top 100 sites on the web use JavaScript and its use outside web pages is rapidly growing. However, JavaScript is not yet ready for programming in the large: it does not support a module system. Lack of namespaces introduces module patterns, and makes it difficult to use multiple JavaScript frameworks together. In this paper, we propose a formal specification of a JavaScript module system. A module system for JavaScript will allow safe and incremental development of JavaScript web applications. While the next version of the JavaScript standard proposes a module system, it informally describes its design in prose. We formally specify a module system as an extension to the existing JavaScript language, and rigorously describe its semantics via desugaring to lambda(JS), a prior core calculus for JavaScript. We implement the desugaring process and show its faithfulness using real-world test suites. Finally, we define a set of properties for valid JavaScript programs using modules and formally prove that the proposed module system satisfies the validity properties.

Using object-oriented patterns such as design patterns, architectural patterns, and refactoring operations has considerably simplified the design process of software systems. With the proliferation of Domain-Specific languages, the generalization of OO patterns is a natural demand. A straightforward idea is to adapt OO patterns with automated tool support to the practice of Domain-Specific Modeling as well. A possible solution for that is using graph transformations to formalize and realize such patterns. One may expect, however, that the patterns are realized in a way that they are correct and do exactly what we expect them to. In this paper, we present how one can precisely define the requirements for a domain-specific model pattern, and how to verify the requirements on the implemented patterns. The presented concept is motivated and illustrated with a case study from the state chart domain. © 2012 IEEE.
