This paper explores the notion of intelligent components within a supportive architecture, and looks at their applications to multimedia systems. One particular component is considered that is inspired by neural models;it offers local processing that engenders complex emergent behaviour, providing a simple to use yet powerful visualization tool that has been successfully applied to complex user interaction tasks with a digital library system.

The general principles of neural and hybrid architectures for multimedia in general are discussed. From the perspective of knowledge engineering, hybrid symbolic/neural agents are advantageous since different mutually complementary properties can be combined. Symbolic representations have advantages with respect to easy interpretation, explicit control, fast initial coding, dynamic variable binding and knowledge abstraction. neural agents show advantages for gradual analog plausibility, learning, robust fault-tolerant processing, and generalization to similar input. Since these advantages are mutually complementary, a hybrid symbolic neural architecture can be useful if different processing strategies have to be supported.

A new trademark image retrieval system based on features extracted using Gestalt feature extraction methods is investigated. During retrieval, an alternative feature interpretations in four different modules are utilized. To obtain the final similarity scores, an evidence from these modules are combined. Though this framework may be able to capture perceptual similarity of trademark images, the high computational requirements creates the need for an efficient and low cost computational platform.

A review of recent development of the self-organizing map (SOM) for applications related to data mapping and visualization is presented. neural networks are biological inspired learning and mapping methods, which can learn complex nonlinear relationships between variables from supplied data samples. The algorithm is being exploited as a useful and increasingly promising mapping method for structure visualization, data mining, knowledge discovery and retrieval. The SOM is a simple mathematical model of the mappings which exist in parts of the mammalian cortex (especially visual and auditory cortex). The inputs to a SOM are often drawn from high dimensional space and the algorithm has been used, in an innovative approach, as visualization tool for dimensionality reduction projections. One of the most important properties of the SOM is its topological preservation, i.e. neighbouring points in the input space will be mapped to nearby neuron nodes in the map space. Such a property can be employed for the visualization of mutual semantic relationships between inputs. The SOM is also a reducing process and can approximate a vast quantity of data in a much diminished set of representatives.

The three-dimensional reconstruction of human body parts, and faces in particular, is catalyzing growing interest in many disciplines ranging from basic image processing to video conferencing, constructive and plastic surgery, rehabilitation and virtual clones. Two main problems which have to be faced: filtering of the noise associated to sampling and interpolation between the samples. These two problems can be reframed in the domain of regularization. It is shown that a regularized model can be efficiently obtained by using a new neural network called hierarchical radial basis functions network (HRBF).

In this paper, a system for content-based image retrieval from video databases is introduced, using B-splines for affine invariant object representation. A small number of `key-frames' is extracted from each video sequence, which provide sufficient information about the video content. Color and motion segmentation and tracking is then employed for automatic extraction of video objects. A B-spline representation of the object contours is then obtained, which possesses important properties, such as smoothness, continuity and invariance under affine transformation. A neural network approach is used for supervised classification of video objects into prototype object classes. Finally, higher level classes can be constructed combining primary classes, providing the ability to obtain a high level of abstraction in the representation of each video sequence.
