A high-speed, parallel imageprocessing system capable of handling large amount of data is described. The system, which is based on Texas Instrument's TMS320C40 digital signal processor, offers high processing rates, faster communication ports and has the support for parallel architecture. This paper considers filters which can be used for mode estimation. It starts by studying a method which has been used for mode filtering of images, and then goes on to a more systematic analysis covering the rapidly advancing field of robust statistics. It demonstrates the importance of clarifying the specification of the required filter. It has listed five parameters that are important in the design of peak location filters, and has also shown some of the tradeoffs that exist between them. The need to adapt a filter in an appropriate way to cope with specific signals has been demonstrated: there remains the possibility of making filters self-adapting in this way. Finally, the paper provides cogent arguments against the LMedS approach being the 'ultimate' method of mode estimation.< >

Interest in non-linearsignal/image-processing techniques has been growing. The lack of design tools in this area, however, has severely hindered development. In addition, nonlinear techniques such a stack-filtering, morphology, and order-statistic filters have been seen a separate disconnected methods, rather than as a unified class of filters. Morphological operators have found a range of applications, giving excellent results in areas such a noise reduction. Their design methods however, leave a great deal to be desired. Stack-filters, on the other hand appear to be more suitable for mathematical analysis and offer fast implementation via the threshold decomposition property. Stack-filters and morphological-filters have been shown to be subsets of each other. The present authors attempt to determine a set of stack-filters which are able to emulate morphological filters their noise-suppression and retain structural preservation properties. Hence they take the first step towards a design methodology for morphological filters. The methods developed are demonstrated on two application areas; 1-D ECG signals and ultrasound images.< >

The physical constraints of all imaging systems inevitably impose limits on the achievable spatial resolution and signal to noise ratios of recorded images. Frequently the degradations introduced by the imaging system can be modeled by a linear convolution equation, with the addition of random noise. linear methods for deconvolution are generally implemented using fast Fourier transform (PSF) techniques: the Fourier transform of the recorded image is first multiplied by a suitable filter function and the result is then inverse Fourier transformed to give the deconvolved image. There has been much recent interest in the non-linear method of maximum entropy, which is a more general analysis method for problems involving incomplete data (e. g. deconvolution, tomography, crystallography and aperture synthesis). Examples of linear and maximum entropy deconvolution from a wide range of problems are given to illustrate the properties of the methods.
