Novel protocols that can enable ultra-low latency communication in wireless multihop sensor and actuator networks have recently been presented in the literature. these approaches achieve ultra-low latencies in packet delivery notwithstanding the unreliability of the wireless channel. A systematic methodology to analyze and compare the perfor- mance of ultra-low latency communication protocols is however still missing. this work presents our first steps towards the definition of such a methodology. Building upon this work, we aim at designing and implementing a comprehensive benchmarking framework for ultra-low latency communication protocols.

Location information about mobile devices can reveal movement patterns of people wearing them. We present a crosstechnology approach to track Wi-Fi enabled smartphones using a ZigBee sensor network. Implementing such a system on resource constrained low-power sensor nodes requires means to eficiently process signal strength measurements. We propose a new method to recognize Wi-Fi probe requests on devices that are unable to decode Wi-Fi packets. Initial experiments on a testbed show that it is possible to localize unmodified phones within a building using signal strength measurements.

We present Twonet, a large-scale sensor network testbed with dual-radio nodes. Twonet has 100 Opal nodes with lowpower 32-bit ARM CPU and 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz radios. these nodes are managed by a network of 20 Raspberry Pi nodes at tier 2 and a PC server at tier 1. these nodes together provide a robust testbed for public access. Twonet represents a major addition to the collection of wireless sensor network testbeds that are publicly available. We hope Twonet's availability will foster sensor network research based on a modern 32-bit sensor node architecture and multi-channel wireless networking.

Real-world experiments have shown that the transmission power and the received signal strength of low-power radio transceivers used in sensornets decrease when temperature increases. We analyze how this phenomenon afects the network layer, and find that temperature uctuations may cause undesirable behavior by sensornet routing protocols such as CTP and RPL. Furthermore, we present an approach to make these protocols robust to temperature uctuations by augmenting the ETX link metric with temperature hints.

Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) are fostering pervasive healthcare applications, where people are remotely moni- tored, without the full time assistance of professional care- givers. A key enabling element is the possibility to locate people in indoor environments, especially in emergency situations. Framed within the WSN4QoL project, this paper proposes the use of a ray tracing model for network planning, to support eficient people localization and performance analysis. We present the design of a reliable nurse call system based on wireless embedded devices and multi-hop protocols. Our work is motivated by the need for such system during annual summer camps for people with muscular dystrophy and the lack of suitable alternative solutions. We describe how our prototype meets the reliability and real-time requirements of such system, and report on results from a two-week de- ployment during a camp with 13 afected boys in July 2013.

We il- lustrate the specific requirements and challenges of working with wireless sensors underground, and we describe the solutions adopted for obtaining a working WSN that provides a robust solution of on line monitoring. We conclude by presenting an assessment and testing of these solutions, along withthe design insights and the lessons we learned during this on-the-field experience.
