Time series forecasting aims at improving energy eficiency in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) by reducing the amount of data trafic. One such technique has each node generate a model that predicts the sampled data. When the actual, sensed data deviates from the model, a new model is generated and transmitted to the sink. Reductions in application data trafic as high as two orders of magnitude can be achieved. However, our experience in applying such forecasting in a real world deployment shows that the actual lifetime improvement is significantly less due to networking overheads. the study reported here reveals that careful, coordinated network parameter tuning can leverage the reduced trafic of forecasting techniques to increase lifetime without compromising application performance.

For understanding human activities in urban public spaces, we have been developing a sensing platform for visualizing data derived from sensor devices in the spaces. the platform collects sensing data from sensor devices installed in public spaces, and provide a simple communication interface to access the sensor data for client systems. In this demo abstract, we describe a working prototype of a sensor data streaming service for visualizing urban public spaces. the streaming data includes the number of pedestrians, pedestrianows, and sound pressures of the human activities in the sensing area. As an application of the streaming service, we will show a client system that visualizes the current pedestrianows in the sensing area with very little delay. the ows are visualized like a view of live camera without pedestrians'appearances. the system has a search interface to retrieve the sensing data in a past period and also visualizes them.

Out-of-band signaling provides a valuable support to the management of wireless sensor networks. Among other signals, sound has a propagation speed in air which is fast enough to be neglected in typical sensor network applications, and slow enough to be measured by means of lowcost embeddedsystems. An ultrasonic triggering mechanism has been recently developed for VirtualSense, an ultra-lowpower sensor node featuring a Java runtime environment. Ultrasonic triggers provide on-demand wakeup capabilities that can be exploited by routing nodes to be switched on whenever there is a packet to be routed towards the sink, while spending all the idle time in an ultra low power inactive state where even the radio module is turned off. In addition, the same hardware components can be used to perform pairwise distance measurements that can be exploited for localization. In this demonstration we show the possible use of VirtualSense ultrasonic wake-up modules as distance estimators.

this poster describes the main features provided by the Sapienza University Networking framework for underwater Simulation Emulation and real-life Testing (SUNSET) [1]. Particularly, we focus on the innovations and improvements introduced in SUNSET v2 after several years of in field experimentation. All the results collected during the different sea trials (considering sea, fjord, lake and river scenarios) have shown how SUNSET represents a robust, reliable and flexible solutions for in field tests where a network of heterogeneous devices is considered, with different acoustic modems, sensing devices and underwater vehicles.

We demonstrate the use of a novel cross layer protocol for routing in Underwater Acoustic sensor Networks (UASNs). Our protocol, named CARP [1] for Channel-Aware Routing Protocol, is able to dynamically adapt to channel dynamics and to the changes occurring in the network topology and link quality over time. CARP is implemented and tested using the Sapienza University Networking framework for underwater Simulation Emulation and real-life Testing (SUNSET) [2] in different network scenarios. Our demonstration shows that CARP is able to find the suitable routes and to deliver data to the sink node independently of prevailing packet error rates and of nodes/links addition and removal.

For this purpose a "scatternet" must be built up, which is a collection of small overlapping "piconets". Bluetooth technology is basically well-suited to some types of wireless sensor networks, but such deployment has been been limited due to the dificulty in setting up and maintaining a scatternet. We demonstrate the SFX algorithm, an extension of the earlier SHAPER procedure. the SFX algorithm builds up a scatternet by a decentralized procedure withthe properties of self-organization, self-optimization, and self-healing. the procedure has been verified by deployment in a photovoltaic power plant.

In this study, we conducted long-distance radio propagation experiments at 1mW/145 MHz to realize low-power long-distance communication for wildlife research and disaster prevention telemetry [1]. We successfully realized long-distance communications from a weather balloon (elevation: ∼14,000 m) with 1 mW radio power. Furthermore, we demonstrated that our method can achieve such long-distance communication at 10 BPS/1mW with battery cell operation in the SSB mode and that the SNR in the SSB bandwidth is better than-10 dB.

In this demonstration, we describe a system that reduces energy consumption by opportunistically reducing energy consumption based on room usage;we only condition rooms currently occupied and condition the space based on realtime occupancy measurements. We will show how a thermal sensor array can be used measure occupancy in real-time and how this occupancy information can be integrated with a real building management system in order to control the heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting of a building to optimize energy usage.

Contiki's Cooja is a very popular Wireless sensor Network (WSN) simulator, but it lacks support for modelling sensing coverage. We introduce WSN-Maintain, a Cooja-based tool for maintaining coverage requirements in an in-building WSN. To analyse the coverage of a building, WSN-Maintain takes as input the oorplan of the building, the coverage requirement of each region and the locations of sensor nodes. We take account of the heterogeneity of device specifications in terms of communication capability and sensing coverage. WSN-Maintain is run in parallel withthe collect-view tool of Contiki, which was integrated into the Cooja simulator. We show that WSN-Maintain is able to automatically turn on redundant nodes to maintain the coverage requirement when active nodes fail and report failures that require physical maintenance. this tool allows us to evaluate diferent approaches to maintain coverage, including deferring physical maintenance to reduce operational costs.
