Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are hard to program due to unconventional programming models used to satisfy stringent resource constraints. the common event-driven concurrent programming model and lack of kernel protection in these systems introduce the possibility of several subtle faults such as race conditions. these faults are often triggered by unexpected interleavings of events in the real world, and can occur long after their causes. Reproducing a fault from the trace of the past events can play a crucial role in debugging such faults. the same tight constraints that motivate the specific programming model however make tracing challenging. this paper proposes an efficient intra-procedural and inter-procedural control-flow tracing algorithm that generates the traces of all interleaving concurrent events. Our approach enables reproducing faults at a later stage, allowing the programmer to identify them effectively. We argue for the accuracy of our approach through case studies, and illustrate its low overhead through measurements and simulations. Copyright 2010 acm.

Heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) is the largest source of residential energy consumption. In this paper, we demonstrate how to use cheap and simple sensing technology to automatically sense occupancy and sleep patterns in a home, and how to use these patterns to save energy by automatically turning off the home's HVAC system. We call this approach the smart thermostat. We evaluate this approach by deploying sensors in 8 homes and comparing the expected energy usage of our algorithm against existing approaches. We demonstrate that our approach will achieve a 28% energy saving on average, at a cost of approximately $25 in sensors. In comparison, a commercially-available baseline approach that uses similar sensors saves only 6.8% energy on average, and actually increases energy consumption in 4 of the 8 households. Localization is a fundamental issue of wireless sensor networks that has been extensively studied in the literature. the real-world experience from GreenOrbs, a sensor network system in the forest, shows that localization in the wild remains very challenging due to various interfering factors. In this paper we propose CDL, a Combined and Differentiated Localization approach. the central idea is that ranging quality is the key that determines the overall localization accuracy. In its unremitting pursuit of better ranging quality, CDL incorporates virtual-hop localization, local filtration, and ranging-quality aware calibration. We have implemented CDL and evaluated it by extensive experiments and simulations. the results demonstrate that CDL outperforms current state-of-art approaches with better accuracy, efficiency and consistent performance. Enix is a lightweight dynamic operating system for tightly constrained platforms for wireless sensor networks (WSN). Enix provides a cooperative threading model, which is applicable to event-based WSN applications with little run-time overhead. Virtual memory is supported with the assistance of the compiler, so that the sensor platforms can execute code larger than the physical code memory they have. To enable firmware update for deployed sensor nodes, Enix supports remote reprogramming. the commonly used library and the main logical structure are separated;each sensor device has a copy of the dynamic loading library in the Micro-SD card, and therefore only the main function and user-defined subroutines should be updated through RF. A lightweight, efficient file system named EcoFS is also included in Enix. the code size and data size of Enix with full-function including EcoFS are 8 KB and 512 bytes, respectively, enabling Enix to run on many RF-enabled systems-on-chip that cannot run most other WSN OSs. Data gathering is one of the most common applications of wireless sensor networks. Such networks are an extremely useful tool for researchers in various domains since they allow for measurements in unaccessible locations, e.g., on mountains, glaciers or in animal habitats. At the same time, the deployment and maintenance of such sites is time consuming and costly. Network reprogramming protocols allow to distribute code updates over the wireless network, which prolongs the interval between human intervention at the deployment site. While network reprogramming has been studied extensively in the literature, existing bulk data dissemination protocols often do not work well together with data gathering applications which operate at low duty-cycles. We present a reliable data dissemination protocol designed for energyefficient operation at low duty-cycles. A simple remote procedure call mechanism is used to control and monitor single nodes during the update process, which provides maximal observability during network reprogramming. Copyright 2010 acm.

this paper presents PipeProbe, a mobile sensor system for determining the spatial topology of hidden water pipelines behind walls. PipeProbe works by dropping a tiny wireless sensor capsule into the source of the water pipelines. As the PipeProbe capsule traverses the pipelines, it gathers and transmits pressure and angular velocity readings. through spatio-temporal analysis on the sensor readings, our algorithm locates all turning points in the pipelines and maps their 3D spatial topology. We evaluated the PipeProbe system by developing a prototype and using data collected in our experimental testbed. Results show that the PipeProbe system successfully located and estimated 90% of all pipe tube lengths within 8-cm accuracy on average tube lengths of 76 cm. PipeProbe also successfully located 90% of all turning points within 15-cm accuracy on average length paths of 335cm. Copyright 2010 acm.

Traffic gatekeeping, typically implemented using firewalls, is an essential functionality in today's networked computing systems such as desktop PCs. Traffic gatekeeping provides protection against a variety of over-the-network security attacks and can also be used to implement various communication resource management policies. With the development of technologies such as IPv6 and 6LoWPAN that pave the way for Internet-connected embedded systems and sensor networks, traffic gatekeeping will soon become a must-have for these systems as well. Towards this, we present Aegis, a lightweight, rule-based traffic gatekeeping framework for sensor networks. this paper presents the design, deployment, and empirical study of a wireless clinical monitoring system that collects pulse and oxygen saturation readings from patients. the primary contribution of this paper is an in-depth clinical trial that assesses the feasibility of wireless sensor networks for patient monitoring in general hospital units. We present a detailed analysis of the system reliability from a long term hospital deployment over seven months involving 41 patients in a step-down cardiology unit. the network achieved high reliability (median 99.68%, range 95.21% - 100%). the overall reliability of the system was dominated by sensing reliability of the pulse oximeters (median 80.85%, range 0.46% - 97.69%). Sensing failures usually occurred in short bursts, although longer periods were also present due to sensor disconnections. We show that the sensing reliability could be significantly improved through oversampling and by implementing a disconnection alarm system that incurs minimal intervention cost. A retrospective data analysis indicated that the system provided sufficient temporal resolution to support the detection of clinical deterioration in three patients who suffered from significant clinical events including transfer to Intensive Care Units. these results indicate the feasibility and promise of using wireless sensor networks for continuous patient monitoring and clinical deterioration detection in general hospital units. Many participatory sensing applications use data collected by participants to construct a publicmodel of a system or phenomenon. For example, a health application might compute a model relating exercise and diet to amount of weight loss. While the ultimately computed model could be public, the individual input and output data traces used to construct it may be private data of participants (e.g., their individual food intake, lifestyle choices, and resulting weight). this paper proposes and experimentally studies a technique that attempts to keep such input and output data traces private, while allowing accurate model construction. this is significantly different from perturbation-based techniques in that no noise is added. the main contribution of the paper is to show a certain data transformation at the client side that helps keeping the client data private while not introducing any additional error to model construction. We particularly focus on linear regression models which are widely used in participatory sensing applications. We use the data set from a map-based participatory sensing service to evaluate our scheme. the service in question is a green navigation service that constructs regression models from participant data to predict the fuel consumption of vehicles on road segments. We evaluate our proposed mechanism by providing empirical evidence that: i) an individual data trace is generally hard to reconstruct with any reasonable accuracy, and ii) the regression model constructed using the transformed traces has a much smaller error than one based on additive dataperturbation schemes. Geographic routing is of interest for sensor networks because a point-to-point primitive is an important building block for data-centric applications. While there is a significant body of work on geographic routing algorithms for twodimensional (2D) networks, geographic routing for practical three-dimensional (3D) sensor networks is relatively unexplored. We show that existing 2D geographic routing algorithms like CLDP/GPSR and GDSTR perform poorly in practical 3D sensor network deployments and describe GDSTR-3D, a new 3D geographic routing algorithm that uses 2-hop neighbor information in greedy forwarding and 2D convex hulls to aggregate node location information. We compare GDSTR-3D to existing algorithms, including CLDP/GPSR, GDSTR, AODV, VRR and S4, both in a real wireless sensor testbed and with TOSSIM simulations to show that GDSTR-3D is highly scalable, requires only a modest amount of storage and achieves routing stretch close to 1.
