the NISAT testbed consists of a center server and many test units. the test units probe the internal interconnected signals inside the motes with extra hardware sniffers. the server gathers, parses and analyzes all data from test units to obtain the information on the network behavior. By adopting the passive sniffing mechanism, NISAT has no side effect on the normal behavior of sensor networks, and it is transparent to the software running on motes. NISAT offers accurate and precise test data for the studies on sensor networks, especially for the high-precision performance measurements and black-box tests without source codes.

Having access to an accurate time is a vital building block in all networks;in wireless sensor networks even more so, because wireless media access or data fusion may depend on it. Starting out with a novel analysis, we show that orthodox clock synchronization algorithms make fundamental mistakes. the state-of-the-art clock synchronization algorithm FTSP exhibits an error that grows exponentially with the size of the network, for instance. Since the involved parameters are small, the error only becomes visible in mid-size networks of about 10-20 nodes. In contrast, we present PulseSync, a new clock synchronization algorithm that is asymptotically optimal. We evaluate PulseSync on a Mica2 testbed, and by simulation on larger networks. On a 20 node network, the prototype implementation of PulseSync outperforms FTSP by a factor of 5. theory and simulation show that for larger networks, PulseSync offers an accuracy which is several orders of magnitude better than FTSP. To round off the presentation, we investigate several optimization issues, e. g. media access and local skew.

sensor networks have the potential to empower domain experts from a wide range of fields. However, presently they are notoriously difficult for these domain experts to program, even though their applications are often conceptually simple. We address this problem by applying the BASIC programming language to sensor networks and evaluating its effectiveness. BASIC has proven highly successful in the past in allowing novices to write useful programs on home computers. Our contributions include a user study evaluating how well novice (no programming experience) and intermediate (some programming experience) users can accomplish simple sensor network tasks in BASIC and in TinyScript (a principally event-driven high-level language for node-oriented programming) and an evaluation of power consumption issues in BASIC. 45-55% of novice users can complete simple tasks in BASIC, while only 0-17% can do so in TinyScript. In both languages, users generally are most successful using imperative loop-oriented programming. the use of an interpreter, such as our BASIC implementation, has little impact on the power consumption of applications in which computational demands are low. Further, when in final form, BASIC can be compiled to reduce power consumption even further.

In an event-monitoring wireless sensor network (WSN), the sensors must be waked up fast to engage in active and high-rate sensing when events of interest occur. However, to prolong the lifetime of the network, the sensors should be put into the standby mode as long as possible. there is thus a tradeoff between the standby duration and the wakeup latency. though the tradeoff is important, what is more important is a flexible transmission schedule that allows the tradeoff to be exploited. In this research, we use debris flow monitoring as a case study to illustrate how the tradeoff between long standby and fast wakeup can be exploited systematically with a flexible transmission schedule.

RACNet is a sensor network for monitoring a data center's environmental conditions. the high spatial and temporal fidelity measurements that RACNet provides can be used to improve the data center's safety and energy efficiency. RACNet overcomes the network's large scale and density and the data center's harsh RF environment to achieve data yields of 99% or higher over a wide range of network sizes and sampling frequencies. It does so through a novel Wireless Reliable Acquisition Protocol (WRAP). WRAP decouples topology control from data collection and implements a token passing mechanism to provide network-wide arbitration. this congestion avoidance philosophy is conceptually different from existing congestion control algorithms that retroactively respond to congestion. Furthermore, WRAP adaptively distributes nodes among multiple frequency channels to balance load and lower data latency. Results from two testbeds and an ongoing production data center deployment indicate that RACNet outperforms previous data collection systems, especially as network load increases.

Wireless sensor networks have been proposed for many location-dependent applications. In such applications, the requirement of low system cost prohibits many range-based methods for sensor node localization;on the other hand, range-free localization depending only on connectivity may underutilize the proximity information embedded in neighborhood sensing. In response to the above limitations, this paper presents a range-free approach to capturing a relative distance between 1-hop neighboring nodes from their neighborhood orderings that serve as unique high-dimensional location signatures for nodes in the network. With little overhead, the proposed design can be conveniently applied as a transparent supporting layer for many state-of-the-art connectivity-based localization solutions to achieve better positioning accuracy. We implemented our design with three well-known localization algorithms and tested it in two types of outdoor test-bed experiments: an 850-foot-long linear network with 54 MICAz motes, and a regular 2D network covering an area of 10000 square feet with 49 motes. Results show that our design helps eliminate estimation ambiguity with sub-hop resolution, and reduces localization errors by as much as 35%. In addition, extensive simulations reveal an interesting feature of robustness for our design under unevenly distributed radio propagation path loss, and confirm its effectiveness for large-scale networks.

Creating and debugging programs for wireless embedded networks (WENs) is notoriously difficult. Macroprogramming is an emerging technology that aims to address this problem by providing high-level programming abstractions. We present MDB, the first system to support the debugging of macroprograms. MDB allows the user to set breakpoints and step through a macroprogram using a source-level debugging interface similar to GDB, a process we call macrodebugging. A key challenge of MDB is to step through a macroprogram in sequential order even though it executes on the network in a distributed, asynchronous manner. Besides allowing the user to view distributed state, MDB also provides the ability to search for bugs over the entire history of distributed states. Finally, MDB allows the user to make hypothetical changes to a macroprogram and to see the effect on distributed state without the need to redeploy, execute, and test the new code. We show that macrodebugging is both easy and efficient: MDB consumes few system resources and requires few user commands to find the cause of bugs. We also provide a lightweight version of MDB called MDB Lite that can be used during the deployment phase to reduce resource consumption while still eliminating the possibility of heisenbugs: changes in the manifestation of bugs caused by enabling or disabling the debugger.

the programming and retasking of sensor nodes could benefit greatly from the use of a virtual machine (VM) since byte code is compact, can be loaded on demand, and interpreted on a heterogeneous set of devices. the challenge is to ensure good programming tools and a small footprint for the virtual machine to meet the memory constraints of typical WSN platforms. To this end we propose Darjeeling, a virtual machine modelled after the Java VM and capable of executing a substantial subset of the Java language, but designed specifically to run on 8- and 16-bit microcontrollers with 2-10KB of RAM. the Darjeeling VM uses a 16-rather than a 32-bit architecture, which is more efficient on the targeted platforms. Darjeeling features a novel memory organisation with strict separation of reference from non-reference types which eliminates the need for run-time type inspection in the underlying compacting garbage collector. Darjeeling uses a linked stack model that provides light-weight threads, and supports synchronisation. the VM has been implemented on three different platforms and was evaluated with micro benchmarks and a real-world application. the latter includes a pure Java implementation of the collection tree routing protocol conveniently programmed as a set of cooperating threads, and a reimplementation of an existing environmental monitoring application. the results show that Darjeeling is a viable solution for deploying large-scale heterogeneous sensor networks.

We present a general framework for building mobility models for floating objects. Such models are useful for studying the behavior of wireless sensors that are deployed to drift along rivers, lakes, oceans, or debris flows. these sensors may be used to track toxic wastes in the water, to study hydrology, or to warn natural hazards. While existing mobility models concentrate on modeling objects moving in autonomy on firm grounds, they cannot be used to describe floating objects that move along with the water flows passively. To build mobility models for such floating objects, our framework entails the use of GPS-equipped wireless sensors that drift along with the water and record the path information. the collected information is converted into a two-dimensional map for modeling the behavior of the floating objects, e.g. generating the simulated drifting paths of the objects. As far as we know, this is the first work on building the mobility models for floating objects.

this paper presents and evaluates two principles for wireless routing protocols. the first is datapath validation: data traffic quickly discovers and fixes routing inconsistencies. the second is adaptive beaconing: extending the Trickle algorithm to routing control traffic reduces route repair latency and sends fewer beacons. We evaluate datapath validation and adaptive beaconing in CTP Noe, a sensor network tree collection protocol. We use 12 different testbeds ranging in size from 20-310 nodes, comprising seven platforms, and six different link layers, on both interference-free and interference-prone channels. In all cases, CTP Noe delivers > 90% of packets. Many experiments achieve 99.9%. Compared to standard beaconing, CTP Noe sends 73% fewer beacons while reducing topology repair latency by 99.8%. Finally, when using low-power link layers, CTP Noe has duty cycles of 3% while supporting aggregate loads of 30 packets/minute.
