We present a method to extract topology information from detection events of mobile entities moving through a network of binary sensors. We extract the topological structure of possible paths in the network by analyzing the time correlation of events at different sensors. the histograms of time delays between any two sensors contain the necessary information to reconstruct the network topology. this data is heavily corrupted by noise due to multiple agents in the network. We therefore use a mixture model of multiple Gaussian and a uniform distribution to explicitly isolate the noise. Our algorithm yields a graph representing the topology of our sensor network along with average travel time between nodes.

Physicalnet is a fully implemented middleware for wireless networks of sensors and actuators (WNSAs). Based on a lightweight service oriented architecture (SOA), Physicalnet allows the users to create administrative domains, in which owners of the nodes can share and protect their resources so that multiple applications can simultaneously use the same sensors and actuators with conflict resolution mechanisms. By using a general programming abstraction, named "bundle", Physicalnet allows programming across networks and administrative domains, and has a good support for node mobility. Other features of Physicalnet include using the Java language, supporting heterogeneous devices, and providing a chain of user tools.

We will demonstrate a wireless sensor network system for the surveillance of critical areas and properties -- e.g. borders. the system consists of up to 10 sensor nodes that monitor a small border area. the protocols we show focus on detecting trespassers across a predefined area and reporting the detection to a gateway node securely. there, the trespasser's path will be graphically diplayed on a border map. the demonstration features secure protocols for the detection of trespassers, node failure and network partitioning, along with a duty cycle protocol to ensure network longevity. All information pertaining to relevant events in the network or border area will be graphically displayed on a gateway computer.

this demonstration shows the actual application of our wireless AMI[1] system, AMR Xpider. this system consists of a sink node and multiple relay nodes. Hundreds of sensing nodes, which are connected to the relay node, transfer metering data to the MDMS (meter data management system). A total of 20,000 AMR Xpider units have been installed in apartments in South Korea for gas metering during the past three years. the AMR Xpider units are used for actual billing purposes. they operate with battery life of at least five years (generally, around seven years), with an average communication success rate of 98%.

RFID sensor networks comprising batteryless devices that are passively powered by RFID readers present exciting possibilities for ubiquitous computing applications. they require minimal maintenance, are cheap to manufacture and have small form factor. However, their lack of autonomy due to the need for constant power from an RFID reader hinders their deployment. We demonstrate that RFIDs augmented with ambient energy-harvesting capabilities may be used as a first-class sensor platform, allowing them to operate untethered from reader infrastructure. Specifically, we show that a CRFID-based accelerometer sensor can provide both real-time and delayed access to time-stamped sensor data when provided with a small amount of solar energy. the data is collected using a standard RFID reader and displayed in a graphical interface.

Radio interference plays a central role for the performance of Wireless sensor Networks (WSN). Interference not only leads to packet loss, but it also affects the function of MAC and routing protocols. Hitherto, testing the impact of interference on WSN experimentally has been difficult because of the unavailability of low-cost tools to create reproducible and well-controlled interference *** this demo we present a simple and inexpensive method to generate controllable and repeatable interference patterns for 802.15.4 devices. the demo is presented as a game, where a user is required to achieve a given interference level.

Within the PermaSense project, two wireless sensor networks have been deployed for a long-term operation in the Swiss Alps. For enabling state-of-the-art permafrost research based on the collected data, highest possible data quality and yield have to be ensured. But, the operation of wireless sensors networks remains a hard research problem. Firstly, deployed wireless sensors networks are subject to continuous changes. Second, there are scenarios that can only be tested in the field as the capabilities of testbeds are too limited. Basically, it is not possible to test for many months before deploying in the field. In this poster, we present an analysis of our data that has been collected over nine months. In addition to describing our system design and methods, we also share our experiences from discovered severe incidences.

In an event-monitoring wireless sensor network (WSN), the sensors must be waked up fast to engage in active and high-rate sensing when events of interest occur. However, to prolong the lifetime of the network, the sensors should be put into the standby mode as long as possible. there is thus a tradeoff between the standby duration and the wakeup latency. though the tradeoff is important, what is more important is a flexible transmission schedule that allows the tradeoff to be exploited. In this research, we use debris flow monitoring as a case study to illustrate how the tradeoff between long standby and fast wakeup can be exploited systematically with a flexible transmission schedule.

Recent experimental studies in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have confirmed that asymmetry in the wireless links has a significant effect on the performance of WSN network protocols. Protocols which work in simulation studies often fail when link asymmetry is encountered in real deployments. Characterization of link asymmetry is thus of paramount importance for the design and operation of re-silient WSN protocols in real scenarios. this paper details an empirical study to characterize link asymmetry in *** are several factors that contribute to link asymmetry in WSNs, the major ones being environmental effects and hardware performance. In this work, we used a systematic approach to measure the effects of hardware performance, i.e. transmitter, receiver and antenna characteristics, on link asymmetry using off-the-shelf WSN devices such as Xbow Mica2 and MicaZ motes. We conducted experiments to study the variations in spectrum utilization in these WSN devices, for both wired and wireless connections, and to ascertain the effects of any frequency and amplitude mismatches on link symmetry between nodes in transmission and reception.

this paper describes Mercury, a wearable, wireless sensor platform for motion analysis of patients being treated for neuromotor disorders, such as Parkinson's Disease, epilepsy, and stroke. In contrast to previous systems intended for short-term use in a laboratory, Mercury is designed to support long-term, longitudinal data collection on patients in hospital and home settings. Patients wear up to 8 wireless nodes equipped with sensors for monitoring movement and physiological conditions. Individual nodes compute high-level features from the raw signals, and a base station performs data collection and tunes sensor node parameters based on energy availability, radio link quality, and application specific *** is designed to overcome the core challenges of long battery lifetime and high data fidelity for long-term studies where patients wear sensors continuously 12 to 18 hours a day. this requires tuning sensor operation and data transfers based on energy consumption of each node and processing data under severe computational constraints. Mercury provides a high-level programming interface that allows a clinical researcher to rapidly build up different policies for driving data collection and tuning sensor lifetime. We present the Mercury architecture and a detailed evaluation of two applications of the system for monitoring patients with Parkinson's Disease and epilepsy.
