We demonstrate a simple RFID sensor network comprised of an Intel WISP and a commodity UHF RFID reader. WISPs are devices that gather their operating energy from RFID reader transmissions, in the manner of passive RFID tags, and further include sensors, e.g., accelerometers, and provide a very small-scale computing platform. We believe that the small form factor and lack of battery makes the WISP an attractive alternative to motes for many of the original smart dust applications that require very small or long-lived sensors. the Intel WISP that we demonstrate has an ultra-low-power microcontroller, 32K of program space, 8K of flash, and accelerometer and temperature sensors. It harvests power from and communicates sensor data to standard (EPC Class 1 Gen 2) UHF RFID readers with a range of roughly 10 feet. this combination of RFID technology and sensor networks raises many research challenges, such as how to function with intermittent power and how to modify RFID protocols to support sensor queries.

Predictive environmental sensor networks provide complex engineering and systems challenges. these systems must withstand the event of interest, remain functional over long time periods when no events occur, cover large geographical regions of interest to the event, and support the variety of sensor types needed to detect the phenomenon. Prediction of the phenomenon on the network complicates the system further, requiring additional computation on the microcontrollers and utilizing prediction models that are not typically designed for sensor networks. this paper describes a system architecture and deployment to meet the design requirements and to allow model-driven control, thereby optimizing the prediction capability of the system. We explore the application of river flood prediction rising this architecture, describing our work on a centralized form of the prediction model, network implementation, component testing and infrastructure development in Honduras, deployment on a river in Massachusetts, and results of the field experiments. Our system uses only a small number of nodes to cover basins of 1000-10000 km(2) using an unique heterogeneous communication structure to provide real-time sensed data, incorporating self-monitoring for failure, and adapting measurement schedules to capture events of interest.

Staff shortages and an increasingly aging population are straining the ability of emergency departments to provide high-quality care. Moreover, there is a growing concern about the ability of hospitals to provide effective care during disaster events. Tools that automate patient monitoring would greatly improve efficiency, quality of care, and the volume of patients treated. Towards this goal, we have developed MEDiSN, a wireless sensor network for monitoring patients' vital signs in hospitals and disaster events. MEDiSN consists of Patient Monitors which are custom-built, patient-worn motes that sample, compress and secure medical data, and Relay Points that form a static multi-hop wireless backbone for carrying patient;data. Moreover, MEDiSN includes a back-end server that persistently stores medical data and presents them to multiple GUI clients. MEDiSN's heterogeneous architecture enables it to address the compound challenge of reliably delivering large volumes of data while meeting the application's QoS requirements.

We present a building block approach to hardware platform design based on a decade of collective experience in this area, arriving at an architecture in which general-purpose modules that require expertise to design and incorporate commonly-used functionality are integrated with application-specific carriers that satisfy the unique sensing, power supply, and mechanical constraints of an application. Of course, modules are widespread, but our focus is far less on the performance of any individual module and far more on an overall architecture that supports the prototype, pilot, and production stages of design, and preserves the artifacts and learnings accumulated along the way. We present heuristics for partitioning functionality between modules and carriers, and identify guidelines for their interconnection. Our approach advocates exporting a wide electrical interface, eliminating the system bus, and supporting many physical interconnect options for modules and carriers. We evaluate this approach by constructing a family of general-purpose modules and application-specific carriers that achieve a high degree of reuse despite very different application requirements. We show that this approach shortens platform development time-to-result for novice graduate students, making custom platforms broadly accessible.

We present a web service based approach to enable an evolutionary sensornet system where additional sensor nodes may be added after the initial deployment. the functionality and data provided by the new nodes is exposed in a structured manner, so that multiple applications may access them. the result is a highly inter-operable system where multiple applications can share a common evolving sensor substrate. A key challenge in using web services on resource constrained sensor nodes is the energy and bandwidth overhead of the structured data formats used in web services. Our work provides a detailed evaluation of the overheads and presents an implementation on a representative sensor platform with 48k of ROM, 10k of RAM and a 802.15.4 radio. We identify design choices that optimize the web service operation on resource constrained sensor nodes, including support for low latency messaging and sleep modes, quantifying trade-offs between the design generality and resource efficiency. We also prototyped an example application, for home energy management, demonstrating how evolutionary sensor networks can be supported with our approach.

Effective debugging usually involves watching program state to diagnose bugs. When debugging sensor network applications, this approach is often time-consuming and error-prone, not only because of the lack of visibility into system state, but also because of the difficulty to watch the right variables at the right time. In this paper, we present declarative tracepoints, a debugging system that allows the user to insert a group of action-associated checkpoints, or tracepoints, to applications being debugged at runtime. Tracepoints do not require modifying application source code. Instead, they are written in a declarative, SQL-like language called TraceSQL independently. By triggering the associated actions when these checkpoints are reached, this system automates the debugging process by removing the human from the loop. We show that declarative tracepoints are able to express the core functionality of a range of previously isolated debugging techniques, such as EnviroLog, NodeMD, Sympathy, and StackGuard. We describe the design and implementation of the declarative tracepoints system, evaluate its overhead in terms of CPU slowdown, illustrate its expressiveness through the aforernentioned debugging techniques, and finally demonstrate that it can be used to detect real bugs using case studies of three bugs based on the development of the LiteOS operating system.

Network diagnosis, an essential research topic for traditional networking systems, has not received much attention for wireless sensor networks. Existing sensor debugging tools like sympathy or EmStar rely heavily on an add-in protocol that generates and reports a large amount of status information from individual sensor nodes, introducing network overhead to a resource constrained and usually traffic sensitive sensor network. We report in this study our initial attempt at providing a light-weight network diagnosis mechanism for sensor networks. We propose PAD, a probabilistic diagnosis approach for inferring the root causes of abnormal phenomena. PAD employs a packet marking algorithm for efficiently constructing and dynamically maintaining the inference model. Our approach does not incur additional traffic overhead for collecting desired information. Instead, we introduce a probabilistic inference model which encodes internal dependencies among different network elements, for online diagnosis of an operational sensor network system. Such a model is capable of additively reasoning root causes based on passively observed symptoms. We implement the PAD design in our sea monitoring sensor network test-bed and validate its effectiveness. We further evaluate the efficiency and scalability of this design through extensive trace-driven simulations.

A home where every major appliance can be monitored for energy consumption and individually controlled wirelessly has long been a dream of gadgeteers and the green-conscious alike. Research has shown that real-time, per-appliance electricity usage feedback call induce behavior changes that lead to 10% to 20% reduction in usage [2]. We present acmE (AC Meter): an IP-based wireless device that provides real time energy usage measurement and control for AC devices. this device fills the gap between inexpensive watt-meters and expensive networked enterprise energy monitors. We show that acmE provides accurate measurement of active, reactive, and apparent energy from milli-amps to tens of amps. We also demonstrate its ability to remotely switch the connected appliance. In this demo, we will present a complete home monitoring system that integrates a set of acmEs with art 802.15.4-to-802.11 router and a web server. Energy measurements will be pushed directly into a database by the acmEs via UDP and retrieved by the web server continuously or on-demand to generate real-time graphs.

We present the design and performance of a wireless sensor network that is deployed in a substation for monitoring the health of power subsystems such as circuit breakers, transformers and transformer bushings. the sensor network consists of 45 low power nodes for temperature sensing and a high power node that is capable of performing more specialized computations. All nodes communicate over a multihop mesh network that uses a dynamic link-quality based routing protocol. the nodes are solar powered and are capable of operating autonomously for multiple years. © 2008 acm.

this paper presents a tool for uncovering bugs due to interactive complexity in networked sensing applications. Such bugs are not: localized to one component that is faulty, but rather result from complex and unexpected interactions between multiple often individually non-faulty components. Moreover, the manifestations of these bugs are often not repeatable, making them particularly hard to find, a's the particular sequence of events that invokes the bug may not be easy to reconstruct. Because of the distributed nature of failure scenarios, our tool looks for sequences of events that may be responsible for faulty behavior, as Opposed to localized bugs such as a bad pointer in a module. All extensible framework is developed where a front-end collects runtime data logs of the system being debugged and an offline back-end uses frequent discriminative pattern mining to uncover likely causes of failure. We provide a case study of debugging a recent multichannel MAC protocol that was found to exhibit corner cases of poor performance (worse than single channel MAC). the tool helped uncover event sequences that lead to a highly degraded mode of operation. Fixing the problem significantly improved the performance of the protocol. We also provide a detailed analysis of tool overhead in terms of memory requirements and impact oil the running application.
