this paper describes ERIKA Educational, an open source, integrated real-time kernel architecture used for developing embedded real-time applications. this version of the kernel is especially targeted for an educational audience, that wants to experiment embedded system design, real-time scheduling and wireless communication on a simple inexpensive platform such as the LEGO Mindstorms RCX1. the kernel architecture provides support for advanced scheduling algorithms and primitives, and for the standard devices available on the LEGO Mindstorms. A radio frequency module that interact with the RCX IR sensor has also been developed to enable easy cooperation between different entities. A case study is finally presented showing how ERIKA Educational can be used to create small networked embedded control systems.

Buffer over-flow attacks have been causing serious security problems for decades. With more embedded systems networked, it becomes an important research problem to defend embedded systems against buffer overflow attacks. We propose the hardware/software address protection (HSAP) technique to solve this problem. We first classify buffer overflow attacks into two categories (stack smashing attacks and function pointer attacks) and then provide two corresponding defending strategies. In our technique, hardware boundary check method and function pointer XOR method are used to protect a system against stack smashing attacks and function pointer attacks, respectively. Although the focus of the HSAP technique is on embedded systems because of the availability of hardware support, we show that the HSAP technique is applied to any type of processors to defend against buffer overflow attacks. We use four classes of processors to illustrate that the applicability of our technique is independent of architectures. We experiment with our HSAP technique in ARM Evaluator-7T simulation development environments. the results show that our HSAP technique defends a system against more types of buffer overflow attacks with little overhead. © 2003 IEEE.

the recent advances in radio and embedded system technologies have enabled the proliferation of wireless microsensor networks. Such wirelessly connected sensors are released in many diverse environments to perform various monitoring tasks. In many such tasks, location awareness is inherently one of the most essential system parameters. It is not only needed to report the origins of events, but also to assist group querying of sensors, routing, and to answer questions on the network coverage. In this paper we present a novel approach to the localization of sensors in an ad-hoc network. We describe a system called AHLoS (Ad-Hoc Localization System) that enables sensor nodes to discover their locations using a set distributed iterative algorithms. the operation of AHLoS is demonstrated with an accuracy of a few centimeters using our prototype testbed while scallability and performance are studied through simulation.

Architectural foundations of a visualization system, the embedded decision advisor and fault indicator (EDAFI), and its application were described. It can monitor extremely complex test articles and validate structural health monitoring algorithms in a realistic environment. EDAFI can define virtual sensors to present result from complex computation. It can utilize potentially distributed, computational power during a test.

By combining the information provided by ground radar tracking, multilateration, ADS-B, vehicle tracking, embedded loop sensors, flight information data, ASR, and other air traffic management systems comprehensive data base, information will be making decisions with the same data. thus, sensor fusion supports the long-term goals of an integrated air space management system in a collaborative decision making environment. this paper discusses the current state and practical application of sensor data fusion for airport surface management and safety systems. It also provides a brief history and background of sensor fusion and discusses several current applications and installations.

Modern systems such as fly-by-wire aircraft, nuclear power plants, manufacturing facilities, battlefields, etc. are all examples of highly connected network enabled systems. Many of these systems are also mission critical, and need to be monitored round the clock. Such systems typically consist of embedded sensors in networked subsystems that can transmit data to central (or remote) monitoring stations. Moreover, many legacy systems were originally not designed for real-time onboard diagnosis, but are safety critical, and would benefit from such a solution. Embedding additional software or hardware in such systems is often considered too intrusive, and introduces flight safety and validation concerns. Such systems can be equipped to transmit the sensor data to a remote-processing center for continuous health monitoring. At Qualtech systems, we are developing a Remote Diagnosis Server (RDS) that can support multiple simultaneous diagnostic sessions from a variety of remote systems. the RDS server is built on a three-tier architecture with a "Broker" application in the middle layer, and multiple TEAMS-RT and TEAMATE based reasoners at the backend. the client layer consists of sensor agents that collect test results and transmit them over a message-passing network. the resultant solution is remarkably efficient. Even an old 50 MHz Sparc20 can support tens of concurrent sessions involving hundreds of tests. the solution scales easily to hundreds of sessions in any modern workstation or server. Inspired by the significant interest from the aerospace community, we are enhancing the scalability of our RDS solution to solve huge and complex systems such as system-wide health monitoring of the International Space station or a fleet of commercial jetliners. We also recently won an STTR from NASA to make RDS accessible to automobiles and appliances over standard wireless telephone networks.

this paper summarizes a cost benefit analysis performed to assess the potential impact, in terms of cost and other measures, of structural health monitoring capabilities on operators of commercial transports. Amongst the topics discussed are: real-time (or near real-time) characterization of structural condition and integrity; improved processes and procedures for aircraft life-cycle management and maintenance; feedback of real-time dynamic flight information related to aircraft structural integrity to enable flight control and recovery; and capabilities for reading, translating, processing, and analyzing data generated by embedded sensor, instrumentation, and control systems. the purpose of the analysis was to provide an objective basis for: identifying economic, engineering, operational, and logistical considerations for effective decision-making relative to technology development and implementation; balancing the relevant investment cost against these considerations; identifying where cost savings and positive return on investment can be realized; encouraging up-front user input and involvement in planning and implementation; minimizing the impact, cost, and risk of future implementation and integration; and capitalizing on cost-effective technology insertion opportunities.

Describes the design and implementation of a middleware system named the Possession System. the system is designed based on the "possession model", which provides users with a consistent view of application components, networked sensors and distributed devices by introducing two separate abstractions: "body" and "soul". the Possession System realizes a simple framework to deal with the adaptation of distributed multi-user applications by changing the relations among "bodies" and "souls". Furthermore, it enables users to interact with system components with a simple operation named "possession". Distributed multi-user applications built on top of our middleware realize adaptive behavior, which is achieved by a mechanism combining system events with various behavioral changes of application components, including the migration of components. the middleware is applicable to adaptive systems in mobile and ubiquitous computing environments where unpredictable changes in the available computing resources, device configuration and geographic location frequently occur. We describe how multi-user applications using our middleware behave adaptively.
